This is one of the best practical demonstrations of an "inside baseball" technique that I've ever seen. Bravo, Mr. Cone!
This video has nothing to do with what occurred. It was adhesive on his glove hand as seen applied on video. Bravo...
This guy is an idiot. MLB did an awful job on this situation, ESPN displaying it as if Scherzer did anything wrong. Terrible misinformation all around
MLB just suspended David Cone for ten games. Ha.
Heard he signed a nice deal to cover Japanese baseball😭🤣🤣
LMAO
We wait for him and Scherzer here in Japan, same team as Trevor 😂
They ejected him for showin up the idi... I mean Umps too
Good 1
Love this video and how David Cone shows us the secret to the magic trick!
I have a feeling Cone knew this trick a long time ago when he pitched.
@@piteusx8440 of course he used it himself 😂
Every club house manager will be stocking up on rubbing alcohol now
@@tuggspeedman6822 everyone has known this for decades.
1992 World Series champ. I remember lots of cone heads in the Skydome whenever David started a game. He’s a legend.
Toronto represent !! I was thinking the same thing. 👊
@@randomname9758 I wrote that comment for people from T.O. I was 16 at the time and I remember a million car horns being honked all around the GTA.
Young people who follow the game today are likely unaware how good Cone and Bret Saberhagen were in their prime. Both guys were nearly unhittable when all their pitches were working....
This is exactly what Trevor Bauer said and showed a few years ago that enraged MLB officials.
Literally looking for this comment lol
I was gonna say “congrats ESPN, Bauer did this 2 years ago”
And then Manfred went and beat up three women and blamed it on poor innocent Bauer.
@@long-time-first-time wouldn't put it past him
I was thinking the same exact thing. Funny seeing you here Joe
@@long-time-first-time “Accused” and the case fell through. Stay mad
Thank You David for the breakdown
This is exactly what I’ve been curious about. Thanks David Cone, and thanks for joining the Jays in 1992.
In an unrelated story, David cone will now be pitching in Japan.
I'm so surprised no one remembers that.
@@ImReverseGiraffe wait what
@@ImReverseGiraffe Dude, what? The comment was a Bauer reference.
David Cone was my guy back in the 90’s & early 2000’s. Glad to see he’s doing well 👏🏻👏🏻 ⚾️
He’s a broadcaster for the Yankees now I’d say he’s doing just fine
Thank you! This was the most informative PSA. Never knew this and I pitched early in my life decades ago.
Trevor Bauer did the same thing right before his 2 year suspension. Except he did it while being interviewed live on national TV
I remember that one game where he was obviously using a substance because his rotation was insane. I loved that the league cracked down which caused Garret Cole to cry on national television. No crying in baseball indeed.
Its definitely a pattern no coincidence that Max also discussed this on a podcast before he got set up too.
This is a fantastic piece. Proper sports journalism. And Cone, having pitched, is authoritative. Scherzer's ejection and suspension are ludicrous.
The knowledge of an expert at its best Thank you Mr. Cone
Good demonstration 👊🏽 MLB needs more of this.
Thank you David Cone for showing this! thank you also ESPN for publishing it!
Dave, thank you very much for sharing this with us. You are not only an exceptional broadcaster, but also a former Met.
That is the best visual explanation I have seen!
You need to let the alcohol dry off. Plus.....why did Scherzer not use the rosin bag on the mound. He only used it when he was in the dugout or clubhouse. Strange
Now this is Sport Reporting !
This is snitching. He knows the trick because he used it.
So basically he didn't break any rules. Great video.
Very good explanation...thanks!
And next season Cone will be announcing games in Japan
This is a great explanation as I had no idea what was the issue if rosin is legal
Thank you Cone, I didn't know what rosin and alcohol or rosin and sweat do. This video helped a lot!
Just grab a ball on center like a fastball and throw it like a football, stiff wrist. It's called inside the mlb lines the Roger Beshens influenced football slider. They named it sweeper cause they don't want to pay me. Notice how they don't say the Grip, Tilt and Wrist action so it's WELL KNOWN like I just told you. I taught hundreds how to throw it in May 2018, I started with Glasnow, Musgrove, Taillon, Folty and now so many throw it they named it what they chose and are too cheap to throw me a lollipop. Billions thrown around and not giving me credit is probably not a good idea.
Andy, I'd like to offer you a position as an MLB rules official! You sound very qualified and knowledgeable.
Wow thanks for the demo, no sarcasm at all, great information
Cone was one of my all-time favorite Mets.
Excellent explanation
Very educational. Thank you.
It's a sticky situation, that's for sure!
Great insight !
More of this content, ESPN!
Who remembers the coneheads? David was not only an elite pitcher. He also had a great bat. He was a mini shohei without the home run power back in the days. When he pitched for the Mets you had 9 legit hitters on the plate.
So basically MLB gives them a resin and tells them how to use and then bans them for using it. Oh no wait, he was banned because MLB did not want to say that their umpire messed up.
He wasn't banned. He was suspended. Big difference.
@@reason6835 the point still remains
@Dholley: Fair enough. But this little experiment with the alcohol completely ignored the fact that he also had sticky stuff on his glove. That's not allowed at all. Even if it's rosin.
@@reason6835 but that could have been just transfer from his pitching hand or ball. He even change that glove
@MJxAJ: Still illegal. People are acting like he got suspended for nothing. He broke the rules by having a foreign substance on his glove. New glove or not.
Good breakdown David
MLB owes Max an apology....AND needs to repay the Fine money!
David Cone is an all star and a legend, he know the game of pitching literally like the back of his hand.
He knew exactly what these new cats are doing. Funny how many people thought it was sweat, but not Cone.
Thank you Coney!!!
good breakdown
Danny, on Judy’s you tube: Great advice!! I wish I had known about that 52 years ago, lolol!!!😄😄⚾️⚾️🇺🇸🇺🇸
Since May 2018 pitchers learned my Football Slider, which is on center grip, throw like a football, stiff wrist. The one's that have that Grip, Tilt and Wrist action realized aren't worried about any extra grip. Some pitchers just tell the ump, it's the football slider and have a 6 pack with them after the game. Some of the antics are for just for entertainment. When guys make the money they are making they like to have fun.
Mr. Perfecto Game. You are an approved voice to talk about this matter.
translation = they was hatin on em
good clip & info. i was confused by the whole thing last week. now he gets 10 game suspension!!! i THOUGHT he washed his hands with soap & water. max needs to SEE THIS CLIP. no more rubbing alcohol, only soap
❤ David Cone
This video deserves 5820 billion views
TY David...and no he is not levitating the ball!
So. He used a bag that is sanctioned by MLB. Then he did what the umps told him to do to clean off the resin. 10 game suspension.
Nice.
Exactly sweat and rosin he wasn’t lying
Cone was fun to watch pitch back in the days.
Great job David he should be reinstated
Bro why you got David Cone of all people talking about sticky stuff 😭
David Cone never threw my Football slider, Carlton, Guidry, Lyle, did before him. It's easy to identify. Arm angle dictates the break. I could tell Cone didn't have a true football tilt and that will water it down a lot. Today in many cases a badly thrown football slider is recorded as a cutter. I watch Kuhl all the time mess up with a bad grip, tilt. I talk to him for 2 minutes he could be like Musgrove.
David should do a cooking show.
Phil Cuzzi is one of the biggest jokes. All umpires are disgraceful these days.
It's not Cuzzi's fault, it's the rules that are stupid. Cuzzi didn't make these rules but he has to enforce them, Manfred was the one who implemented these stupid rules. He's the one to blame.
@@emmanuelwood8702 of course it’s cuzzis fault. Scherzer has been doing the same thing for years and never been ejected but Cuzzi had to interject himself- total tool bag
@@emmanuelwood8702 yeah it’s definitely Cuzzis fault. I saw where he’s the only ump who has actually ejected pitchers this year. This rule gives him a way to toss ppl and feel special. Either he’s just an idiot who doesn’t understand the basic science of the sport he is supposed to be in charge of or he’s egotistical and gets off on the power of ejecting the worlds best pitchers from a professional game.
My opinion is it’s his power complex.
MLB: "Wait! That's illegal, David. We're giving you a 10 day vaca."
I don't think that vacay is paid lol but I don't know jack about baseball contracts
To think umps don't know this is silly. What umps called on Max was a much more increased amount of stickiness, more so than other pitchers. If it were just rosin, water, and alcohol, many more pitchers would be thrown out.
Exactly.
So how does Max not know this? I guess the point is that he DOES and did it anyway. D'oh!
Because everything in this video is legal.
Based on this video Scherzer should never have been thrown out. Rosin is legal.
Great breakdown on how it works, but did I miss the video on why it being sticky helps?
No he forgot to say, pitchers know what Roger Beshens taught them in May 2018, throw like a football, stiff wrist, on center grip is why 600 pitchers have nasty slider called the Roger Beshens football slider inside the lines, but we call it a sweeper now.
It helps with the grip. You can rotate the ball when pitching with additional grip. More rotations on the ball, the more dynamic the pitch becomes.
@@Akhillees thank you
Wow…the sticky stuff..
I don't understand the description of the video? "Caught" with a sticky substance. Rosin is legal and is provided by MLB to the pitchers.
Gerrit Cole taking notes and buying all the rubbing alcohol that he can😂😂😂
Don’t be rude
@@DeepDishPizza lols cant take a joke 🤡🤡🤡
done on yes and espn is simply the best in the game analyst wise better than most nfl analysts
What does the stickiness help with? To make the ball spin? I would think it would be harder to throw straight when sticky.
It’s all about spin rate on breaking pitches.
@@stocktonnash that seems very technical for it to work to a pitchers advantage.. I’m Australian so genuinely don’t know
@@natch454 It basically helps with grip and rotation. The stickier the stuff, the easier it is to get rotation out of the ball, and in an ideal world more rotations or “spin” = better/more effective pitches. It doesn’t always work, but for the top tier pitchers it makes a HUGE difference. If you’re ever interested in learning more, Trevor Bauer has multiple videos on here explaining that process.
@@TheDude044 oh I see man cheers. Would stickum also cause the ball to stick to the bat? Making less chance of a home run? I totally get what your explaining but to me seems like a minimal advantage to the point it would be a rule. Has someone used the advantage of stickum in the past to where they made the rule or something ?
One would think to use a game ready ball to show the effects.
impressive!
Sticky Gel From The Pitcher’s Hair is another option out of the thousands ways.
So Max got screwed is what I'm gathering from this video
or... max knew exactly what he was doing and is feigning innocence
Cone looks ready to take out the Trashstros. ❤
From some of the previous comments made about the explanation and demo the umps and MLB got it right. This was excellent! Well done 👏👏👏👏🍺🍺🍺!
this was great, I love baseball
David Cone is Spiderman
Would like to hear Coney’s take on why German didn’t get ejected. Wishing Coney worked for the Cardinals.
It wasn’t Phil Cuzzi
So if it's legal why did Max get suspended and not other pitchers in the league ?
MLB needs to talk to all the umpires and make sure they're enforcing proper protocols..
It's necessary for pitchers to have some stickiness on their pitching hand - otherwise the ball could slip when being released, and cause unnecessary injuries due to hitters getting hit by pitches.
There is literally, and I mean literally, zero evidence for that. When the sticky stuff was in full effect in 2020 the number of HBP didn't go down, and since the sticky stuff ban the HBP number hasn't gone up. That was just an excuse pitchers used to try and keep it. There is zero evidence that's its true.
Yea remember trout liked it. Less people beeing hit by pitches.
Wow never new it
I taught Matt Blake and Ethan Katz my football slider in May 2018 thru Twitter. Ever wonder why they got hired and what they teach? I taught the Rays my football slider when I taught Glasnow in Pittsburgh May 2018. Ever wonder why the Rays wanted Glasnow? Glasnow messaged me June 19, 2018 after trying my football slider vs Brewers. For Matt Blake not teaching it as good as the Rays is a complete failure on his part and Boone should replace him ASAP. If I was there there would be 15 guys in AAA Football Slider ready.
Cone is the best ❤
It was on his glove, which is illegal. It was applied in the dugout, also illegal, and its just sus, he never picked up the bag on the mound. Plus his reaction is the same as a criminal getting caught.... It all falls into place if you think about it.
Fix the ball and there's no issues anymore. I know batters want control too.
Now show one using spider tack
If anyone ever tried to remove anything sticky with alcohol would know it can cause the sticky stuff to smear and make things worse.
Except the way to remove rosin is through pure alcohol....
It’s insane the MLB doesn’t understand simple chemistry
it's insane Scherzer didn't understand simple chemistry
@@wadexyz Scherzer listened to and did what the official and umpires told him. Not his fault 🤷♂️.
Makes me think there’s something up with that rosin bag or the alcohol. Rosin is soluble in alcohol and should be easily washed away.
Either way, Max got a bad deal here.
I’m surprised they allow rosin anyway since it’s pine sap. For how obsessed they are about sticky stuff they go ahead and allow like sap?
If you ain't cheating, your not trying,
That's baseball
"Cheating is the gift man gives himself."
It makes it more sticky because
A) Alcohol evaporates very quickly. All he did was liquefy it, then it dried before he could wipe it off.
B) The black color of the sticky area is because it is dirty. Dirty from the resin bag which has dirt all around it. The alcohol washed away the dirt and left the resin in a fresh ultra tacky state.
Cuzzi and Belino are both jokes as umpires. they rank right up there with CB and Angel
You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. Max Scherzer was screwed!
If it don't stick like rosin, it ain't rosin baby!
Welcome to Yokohama David Cone
The problem here is that he was not using the field rosin bag. He was using the one from the dugout, see jomboy for more details.
While this certainly demonstrates how sticky rosin can get, it doesn't help that he put more rosin on right after alcohol, then claims it got stickier from the alcohol. Plus, even after the alcohol cleaning (and more rosin), the first handful of tries to hang the ball it looked slightly less sticky (i.e. harder to suspend the ball without reapplying pressure). But that aside, this was very helpful to see just how sticky fingers/hands can get from the rosin alone.
But rosin isn’t illegal tho.
David Cone broke that down very good. Scherzer should washed his hands with soap and water. To get rid of the sticky stuff.
*Looks like an expert at this...*
Excellent video. But be careful or you might get retribution from MLB's commissioner's office for saying the wrong thing.
Cone knows his stuff. MLB needs to make the rule clearer. It says "any foreign substance on the hands" rosin is legal but how much is too much?
that's at the discretion of the ump, it appears. and that's how a lot of rules are in baseball...and personally, i'm fine with it.
They all are given it? So who paid big $ to suspend him. What interest group 😅
Trevor Baur has been saying this !
Now how about a demo on how Mike Scott “manipulated” the baseball?
Cone out here being a narc! Haha
Can David Cone break down how he got tossed and Yankees pitcher didnt?
It wasn’t the other night. It was a day game.
