      Holmes didn't say anything bad about Ali in the thrilla in Manila doc, just that Ali was overrated. Maybe in those latter years after Manila he got some gift decisions he had no right winning, but that's what you get when you're a megastar in boxing. They don't watch the other fighter they watch you. Holmes wouldn't of been in the same galaxy as Clay/Ali of the 60s, he'd of been absolutely annihilated.

      I cannot bring myself to watch the final two fights of Ali's career in their entirety. I am the same age as Mike Tyson and like Mike, and so many others took the losses hard. Also, like many, I did not know Ali was sick at the time, and had been for a good while.
      I have heard boxing insiders, trainers, and fighters alike say that Ali probably did enough to get that decision, against Berbick, (not my words or opinion-- never watched the fight), but Ali was a beloved figure at that point, and nobody except maybe Don King wanted to see him fight again or receive any more damage. So, Ali was not getting a decision unless he dominated.
      I met Berbick one time at Top Rank in Las Vegas and I witnessed the bad, bullying behavior people have referenced here in other comments. The hate on Larry is layered and in some instances complex. Yeah, there was the love we all had for Ali. But also, hardcore fans who know their boxing object to Larry saying, he was better than Ali and could have beaten him as early as '74-'75 when Ali was dismantling Foreman and slamming the door on Frazier's title dreams once and for all...two guys that would have been terrible match-ups for Holmes-- and also two guys he never fought. Add to that, the fact that Larry's title winning effort and some of his early defenses were recycled opponents Ali had beaten years earlier...yeah, he was easy to hate. Larry was a fabulous boxer and technician in the ring. But he was extremely limited as an athlete and lacked one punch KO power, which would have cost him dearly in a number of hypothetical match-ups...a legend of his era, but not an all-time great. Ascending after Ali and before Tyson, he just came along at the right time.

    • @MaccaveliPL
      @MaccaveliPL 3 года назад +10

      @@StevenSmith-zw1pd Holmes is definitely an all-time great. Top 4 HW for sure. He didn't have one punch KO power, but he still holds the title for consecutive title defences ended in the stoppage. Prime Holmes would give prime Ali a toughest fight of his career and the result would be a razor thin split decision that could go both ways. He definitely has better resume that Tyson, he just wasn't that flashy.

    • @StevenSmith-zw1pd
      @StevenSmith-zw1pd 3 года назад +5

      I respect your RIGHT to have an opinion. BUT I do not respect your opinion. Here is why:
      1. I will not call Larry a top 4 all-time heavyweight because he never fought Frazier or Foreman. If he was so great in 74-75, they were there. There is a reason he never fought them.
      2. To prove your point, all he had to do, was beat Michael Spinks-- a puffed up light-heavyweight. He could not do it. He lost to him twice. By the way, I have TREMENDOUS regard for Michael Spinks. Larry's lack of power and athleticism cost him dearly in those fights... couldn't get the smaller man out of there. It forced everybody to re-think the, "...Marciano couldn't carry my jockstrap" comment. He never would have survived Rocky's pressure and roughhousing without one punch KO power. NOBODY did. That was his moment and he wet the bed twice. Ali's last history-making moment was a third title winning effort, against Leon Spinks. Ali was 36. The power in his right hand was gone. He had Parkinson's. Ali never hurt Leon, but he used his dimensions, and athleticism to resurrect enough movement to keep Leon at range, and gave him a boxing lesson. This was the third, actually, fourth generation of heavyweights he fought and he became champion. He is considered the GOAT because he spanned multiple eras. Larry also proved his greatness in his "second career" by dominating a much younger Ray Mercer, and giving champion Oliver McCall hell. Larry famously said, "these young guys don't know how to fight." But the all-time greats COULD fight. So, the Spinks losses, and the fact that he never regained the title in another era, limit him to a legend of HIS era.
      3. And finally, it is blasphemy for you to speak of PRIME Ali, since NOBODY ever SAW him in his PRIME. Those were the 3 1/2 years Ali spent in exile age 28-31 the best years for a heavyweight. And when he came back, he was a different guy, who kept winning with a diminished and different skill set. The closest anybody ever came to seeing a PRIME Ali was his last fight before they stripped him, and his Supreme Court battle that followed. I believe (1966-67) that opponent was Cleveland Williams-- a guy that would have been a terrible match-up for Holmes--...a murderous puncher, and remember Larry got touched a lot and was dropped multiple times early in his title reign. Watch the Ali v. Williams fight. Then tell me who, other than the larger, super-heavyweights, that began to emerge during the end of Tyson's run, would have stood a snowball's chance in hell against that guy. Nothing from the first Frazier fight, (1971), on can be considered PRIME Ali. Sadly, his prime was wasted. He never had a prime.

    • @MaccaveliPL
      @MaccaveliPL 3 года назад +6

      @@StevenSmith-zw1pd 1. He wasn't great in 74-75, he was on the come up back then. His prime was around 80-83.
      2. He was past his prime when he fought Spinks. He won the second fight, just got robbed by the judges.
      Holmes would have killed Marciano if they fought. Marciano was too small and too slow. He would have won this fight off of his jab alone. Rocky would be neutrialized completely.
      3. Well, we're not talking about hypothetical prime. We talking about what happened. Prime Ali was between his Liston and Folley fights. Peak performance was definetely Williams. Ali back then was the greatest thing heavyweight divison has ever seen. I've seen all those fights few times, I don't need to re-watch it. Holmes would be a nightmare for Ali cause he was basically bigger and stronger (but slower) Ali with the same granit chin.

Obviously Ali shouldn’t have been fighting anymore, and those extra blows to the head more than likely sped the progression of Ali’s Parkinson’s, but it wasn’t a brutal match at all. Ali was throwing back, and neither fighter got off an excess of clean blows. The Holmes fight on the other hand was brutal. Vlad makes it sound like it was the other way around. He’s the worst. If he would have had Holyfields training work ethic Bowe would have been one of the greatest of all time without question. He was Big, strong, hit hard, had a jab, had a chin, had it all

    Mike Tyson hit Trevor Berbick so hard i made a dance out of it. The women didn't even want to dance with me anymore, i kept laying down on the floor and get back up and dancing they would say what are you doing ? I said the Trevor Berbick baby and they would find another dancer or go straight out the front door.

    Ali was just a loud mouthed bum. He lost many more times than his record showed, thanks to totally biased judges. Also, he didn't go to Vietnam because he didn't want to go through what the other soldiers went through, not any other conjured up excuse. He was just a big mouthed idiot. Thank God that Parkinson's finally shut him up for good.

    Pretty stupid to hate a fighter simply for doing his job
    It is like in the UK when fans hated Joe Bugner for beating the great Henry Cooper

    How dumb can they be. Ali, though an excellent fighter in his first years o boxing, was artificially given many wins in the last part of his boxing life. His pride did not let him stop. BTW his fights with Liston were undoubtedly fixed.

    I hated Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick still. It would not have hurt them to take a dive for Muhammad considering all that he did for the people and the game. That's why Mike Tyson crushing their asses was so satisfying.

    • @blueterminal7495
      @blueterminal7495 2 года назад

      of course, Larry willing to remove his undefeated 31-0 streak to Ali when Ali doesn't react? How is that? Besides, anybody would have known it would be a dive, so if he took, nobody, absolutely nobody would sanction their fights for a title again. The WBC did the same thing to Sonny Liston, they felt the 1965 Ali match was a dive, seized his purse for apparently "making an excuse" and never gave him a shot at the title and he remained unranked for his remaining years of his life, from 1965-1970. Of course it would hurt them. Nobody would sanction their fights no more and they would go broke.
      Besides, If Larry had given the title to Ali, you can imagine how worse his state would have been if he had fought the contenders.
      Berbick put a stop to his career and made him realize that he really has to stop fighting

    I don't really want to rewatch Ali-Holmes, but Holmes did have some humanity for sure. Tyson could have killed Marvis Frazier, and believe it or not Holmes wasn't too far off of that kind of domination of Marvis as well. But he kept waving the ref over while giving mediocre punches and getting no response to show the guy was done. He certainly could have knocked him out spectacularly had he wanted to- let's face it, not as spectacularly as Tyson did it, but out for the count on the canvas, rather than getting it waved off the ropes.
