After doing guitar setups for 40+ years, if you don't have a 6" 64 or 32 ruler, you can use a quarter for the low E and a dime for the high E strings to set the string height from the 12 fret. Hey, bud you doing good deed here to help out younger/newer guitar players to properly setup their guitars. You got my thumbs up dude!!
gmlasam ok cool, I really appreciate the reply! I just got my first Epiphone les Paul standard and the string broke so I was gonna try it myself. It was already set up so I wonder if I shouldn’t have messed with anything and just put the strings on. Now I’ve touched the bridge and all that so I guess I’m locked in now lol
Thanks for this! At first I couldn’t believe that the height between strings and pickups was 6/64-6/64” because I’ve been playing mine as I got it from the store with them like 1/4 above the pickups! Just spent the past 2 days setting up my Epiphone LP properly and WOW!!! It has never sounded better!! Tone is rich and the sustain lasts for eternity. Thanks again!
Great job. You showed everything in order of process. Also having the dummy cards with numbers located where those relate to the position on the guitar is pure genius. Again great vid. Thank you for taking the time.
Thanks for listing the basic points that need to be checked and measured. The fact that you were able to layout the important points in a clear, simple way makes it seem do able for almost any of us. I will be keeping this handy for future reference. Thanks!🎸
Thanks man, this is exactly what is needed on RUclips, just the quick specs. There's so many setup videos and web articles that beat around the bush until you finally get to the specs if you get them at all. This one is perfect, give you the specs first for those that need, then get into the procedure for those that need it.
I watched a few of these set up vids and they lead you through a forest of time but yours is the first one that gets right to it and in just over 10 minutes, with the necessary measurements. Thank you Sir.
I NORMALLY DON'T EVER USE MATH WHEN SETTING UP GUITARS BECAUSE EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT BUT I WILL SAY THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO START FOR SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T UNDERSTAND HOW GUITARS FUNCTION. GREAT VIDEO, VERY CLEAR AND NO FILLER. A+
One quick thing for all of you that may attempt to do these measurements and adjustments. You should be checking these measurements, as well as tuning and intonation IN THE PLAYING POSITION. You don't play the guitar laying on it's back...Unless it's a pedal steel. Check everything in the playing position, then lay it back down to make the adjustments. Pick it up in to playing position to recheck. Try tuning your guitar on its back, then tune it in playing position. You will hear/see a difference on a tuner.
That is one of the simplest and best guitar set up videos I have ever seen. I also love the included Gibson specs - not that you have to use them but it's nice to know what they are. Well done!
Good straightforward information. You failed to mention truss rod adjustment method though. I find many players are terrified of warping the neck through over tightening. Thanks for posting.
This was indeed helpful and helped me get the guitar to the best point. Had already randomly lowered the bridge and neck relief but didn't work out that well
I have a 1982 Daion Mark XX. It’s a solid body with 2 humbuckers, beautiful natural wood. The numbers were a little different for each adjustment but I was able to setup the guitar using your instructions and the action is 10 times better. BTW used a nickel for the strings it worked. Thanks for your video.
I use a .010 feeler gage at time 4:36 to adjust my trust rod relief. Buy at auto parts store. rub it under the string but on top of fret , if string moves it's to tight just get a nice feel of the feeler gage rubbing but not moving the string too much.
Thanks. I had a bit too much warp in my neck and I'm wondering why it's not sounding right like my other lp. I used a .10 guage string and pulled it back using a kaypo. It's perfect now. Finally I got the guitar perfect. Great video.
Mate this is the BEST help for Gibson guitars neck. You are clear, understandable and relaxing...specially when you said NO WORRY...do it slowly and try your guitar. I wasn't happy with my guitar until i found you man. I wish i could give 1000 likes....you are the best technician
This is probably a good starting point and better than most. I've seen a lot give measurements for neck relief and string hight lower than this but my experience is they are just too low. Personally I don't do measurements as all guitars are different. Raise the bridge until there is no fretting out from the 12th fret upwards (nice clean notes) when bending 1st and second strings up a full tone. Then tighten, or loosen (depending on where your starting from) the neck so that all notes below the 12th fret down (mainly the first frets and around the 6th frets area ) ring clean without buzzing or dead notes. Job done.
thanks for that it was straightforward and concise just what i need ive a 2008 les paul traditional in desert burst she is a beauty but ive had lots of work done its had a refret as i didnt like the gaps between the binding and the fret so i had a luthier do a correct vintage refret on it also it has a hand cut bone nut grover 502-c locking tuners seymour duncan slash pro 2 pickups a vintage wiring loom with bumble bee caps all switchcraft pots a faber hybridge with three brass saddles for the high strings and three titanium saddles for the low strings and a lightweight aluminium tailpiece to round her off she is real sweet buck is lacking a good setup but ive saved your post to my favourites and have all the proper tools so finally she will be as good as she can be.
I prefer 5/64 across the the board for string height. I bend a lot And this allows me to get under the next string when bending. And raising the tailpiece as you did seemed to make bending a tad easier. And we won't collapse the bridge over time either. Thanks for your post. Its good to share info so each of us can come up with the measurements that suit our individual style.
For me, it depends on what I have the guitar set up for. If it is a shred guitar, my action is lower. If I have it set up for Blues, I have the action higher, so I can dig into the bends.
Good points, excellent in fact. I have spoken to GIBSON techs and they TOLD me: "5/64THS @ 12TH Fret on the Low 'E' & 3/64THS @ 12TH Fret for the High 'E' for all GIBSON Solid Body Electric Guitar's", quoted exactly. I just go 4/64THS across to 5/64THS High to Low.
search "printable string action gauge" and look for a google drive site pdf that's a full page of slightly varying string action gauge. it lets you make a 2 sided string action gauge that's mirrored on the other side. the hard part is cutting or folding it right
Dude your video helped me fix my Les Paul, the low e string was so low that the first fret was buzzing so badly it wouldn’t make a sound turns out the height was wrong
Thanks for posting your helpful set up tips. I'm new to Gibson guitars and your vids are just what I need. They are clearly presented with good video shots of the guitar pieces. Now I know what I'm actually doing!
If you are new to Gibsons please be careful. Expensive and you can mess up badly. I have played them for 45 years. I still let a tech do mine. I play them but am scared to play with them. HA
Perfect. Thanks. Recently bought an LP 2nd hand and fixed a few bits on it. It's all set up now but it will be nice to apply this final part to have it play nicer than it does now, and it isn't exactly bad, might just help with a final tweak though. Cheers!
a very well-meaning and helpful video on setting up a Gibson L.P. … It has certainly taken out much of the mystery of '' the guitar setup''. … Knowing something about this gives some measure of protection against being bamboozled by guitar technicians. … I also have a fender telecaster deluxe, on which I have changed the original three piece bridge, for a gold-plated six piece bridge, and I think I have totally mucked up the setup on it. ….. it would have been a bonus if the issue of harmonics vs. string length was addressed.
@@captainamerica9353 thanks for your analysis - every little bit of insight / comment helps to get a more complete picture of the 'Mystery' of GLP setup(s). … I have 2 GLP standards - one with 9''s, and the other with 10''s - amazingly, there was no need to adjust the neck tension when changing to the 9''s.
I just purchased a 1960 Les Paul Custom Shop V.O.S. the set up card which came from the Luthier says 1st Fret L2 H1 then 12th Fret L5 H3 a bit different from your info.
Thank you for making such a great video. I’m learning how to play guitar. I bought a Epiphone les PaulVE. So far it feels great but I would like the higher end strings to be just a tad lower.
And if one subscribes to Fender's setup methodology, all of these measurements are actually made in the playing position, just like tuning the guitar in the playing position is the accurate way to tune it. Why ? Because even though the string may be under higher tension, gravity & magnetic pull both influence the string heights. Fender also indicates the 17th fret is where one should finger fret any given string when the capo is clamping the strings at the 1st fret to check height in the playing position at the 8th fret.
I've been repairing since 1983 and the shop I worked in for 25+ years we set LPs at much lower heights than shown here, these wouldn't play very comfortably. In the USA we set them 1/16" Bass "E" at 12th fret, 1/32" Treble "E" at 12th fret. We set the truss rod clearance as .010" to .012" forward bow at the 7th fret. If the strings had fret buzzes when we set comfortable heights then the frets were leveled, re-crowned and polished just like custom-built guitars. Makes all the difference in the world. Never had one customer complain about our set ups.
this has so much great info. the quality of your video is so low! i know its probably a huge pain but i think you speak really well and clearly. I would love to see this same content re recorded with some better video work.
I have several epiphone les pauls and only one I set the truss. Easy to remember is push wrench away from you and the string will go away from the fretboard. Toward you gets closer to fretboard. That is lying down that is. If I went stupid and am wrong please be nice, I am sick from covid and not thinking very good sometimes. After all I did go to the laundry room to P and was wondering why I was there, then went to bathroom to correct my mistake. EPIPHONE LES PAUL, not all guitars.
I thought about doing that, but there are so many videos out there that have better guitars techs than me showing good setups. It is sometimes hard to find setup specs online though, so i thought this would be helpful and save players time searching for the specs.
Great stuff. Real well explained. Thanks so much. Just wanna remind players that the action is a personal thing. I LOVE high action. Others love it as low as they can. It's how YOU like it. Cheers.
Oh ok yea that’s what I thought!! My new les Paul is set very high and I don’t like it! But shouldn’t a professional tuner set the bridge level and all as it is set to specific angle and measurement etc??!
Larry's tunes, if I wanted an action as high as this guy shows, I could just buy a Chinese junker. I think this guy should tell us these are high action / relief specs.
Great video. Wish you would have touched on the intonation to make it more complete as these adjustments tend to effect that as well. Love the household item substitutes.
Why don’t we call 4/64 a 1/16 and why don’t we call 6/64 a 3/32? I’ve never understood this. We all were taught to reduce fractions in school. I’m a woodworker and there is no way I’d ever measure anything at 4/64”. So do we now call 1/2” 32/64”? It’s the same thing, but why should we do that? It doesn’t make any sense and it’s confusing for people who don’t know their way around a tape measure or calipers. I set my digital calipers at 1/16”. You flip them around and you have a perfect string gauge. When you open the calipers up, you have the slide protrude from the ass end. Depending on the strings you’re playing you can add the string width and then it sits on top. Your video is awesome. Great info for someone trying to learn this stuff. I just thought you might know why we don’t reduce fractions when it comes to luthier work?
Good morning, Thank you for posting your setup videos. You briefly mentioned the string angle between the stop tail and bridge which you went over in another video. I can’t find that video. Do you know which vid has the info?
I have a slightly different Gibson spec for relief: 12 thou for bass, 10 thou for treble As to the tail piece height, if too high one will have tuning stability issues
Does the TAILPIECE have to be even/level? As I have the BRIDGE slightly lower on the treble side for obvious reasons so I wasn't sure if I should have the TAILPIECE slightly at an angle also or always even?...Thanks!
thank you for making the video , ive been looking for some spec vis for 2 years and you are the only 1 with the factory "sercts" , awesome !!! Any chance someone could help me figure out the truss rod on the Schector c1 excotic seeries
When measuring the relief, why is it you press down at the end of the fretboard when everybody else says you need to press down where the neck meets the body? I realize it's all a matter of preference, but this throws off the measurement quite a bit. What is the correct place to press down on the string after the capo on the first fret?
if we have like gibson bridges adjusting action with just e and E strings easy and actually adjusting otomaticly other strings adjusting byself cuz you can’t adjust each string but if fe have tremolo bridges like fender guitar I really don’t know which string height what will be and all action gauges just giving 1. and 6. string info. what height must be others? how can we decide other strings height. I hope you understand me. Sorry if my english is not good. what about other string heights? we adjusted 1.6. string but what should be other strings heights?
Hi Thank you for the information! I have a Les Paul Studio setup (closely) to specs and I get just enough fret buzz to where it drives me crazy. I can hear an overtone-like ringing on fretted notes. I tried loosening the truss rod to give more relief, but even when the tension is all the way off (the nut spins free), the neck still looks almost completely straight. So, it's hard to add very much "relief". The pickups don't seem too high, according to specs. I don't think they're pulling on the strings. I'm really at a loss. I want low(ish) action, but I'm getting fret buzz on both of my electric basses and my guitar. :-( Thanks again, Shawna
You need a slight bow in the neck..dude....If your getting dead note in the middle of the fret board...IF it's buzzing at the first fret...You dont have enough string tension...LOWER THE TAIL. If there's a HIGH FRET...HAMMER them BACK IN or FILE them... It's dosnt matter how fucken expensive a guitar is...IT"S MADE FROM WOOD and METAL...The wood will swell, expend or contract. You're trippuing becuase you spent a shitload of money on a guitar... All my $100 has LOW. LOW actions becuase Im not afraid to take a god damn hammer or wood file to them..FFS Plus mine DONT HAVE TUNING ISSUES. THAT GUITAR WITH THE UGLY LOGO HAS TUNING ISSUES DUE TO...TOO MUCH HEADSTOCK TILT... IT IS WHAT IT IS.... YOU NEED TO TIGHTEN THE NUT BACK...NOT SUPER TIGHT. JUST GIVE THE NECK A COUPLE OF DAYS TO BOW.....
I am concerned that your truss rod has been turning free, if I understand the explanation. I'd find a qualified experienced guitar tech because that isn't right. Good luck.
I'm pretty sure that tightening the truss rod (clockwise turns) increases neck relief. If you are loosening the truss rod (counterclockwise) it will explain why the neck is flat (more concave) with zero relief.

gmlasam, do you set up guitars with string and relief specs that high, also?
gmlasam does the coin slip under without raising the string at all or can it barely touch the string as it slides under?
Danny Aguilar adjust to when the strings just touched the coin. The measurements in this video is ideal starting point and adjust to your preference.
Captain America depends on the client but I start using the specs from this video to work from and fine tune to preference

rub it under the string but on top of fret , if string moves it's to tight just get a nice feel of the feeler gage rubbing but not moving the string too much.

Great video!!! Thanks so much.
Great video. Thank you Sir!
Good morning,
Thank you for posting your setup videos. You briefly mentioned the string angle between the stop tail and bridge which you went over in another video. I can’t find that video. Do you know which vid has the info?
I like how you mentioned using a nickel for the low strings, but what can I use for the high strings?
I have a slightly different Gibson spec for relief: 12 thou for bass, 10 thou for treble
As to the tail piece height, if too high one will have tuning stability issues
Does the TAILPIECE have to be even/level? As I have the BRIDGE slightly lower on the treble side for obvious reasons so I wasn't sure if I should have the TAILPIECE slightly at an angle also or always even?...Thanks!
Thank you for the info, a big help,
as many said already, excellent video, super-clear. do you have one showing how neck relief can be adjusted? thanks!
yo good job and nice tips. thanks so much and keep it up brother
thank you for making the video , ive been looking for some spec vis for 2 years and you are the only 1 with the factory "sercts" , awesome !!! Any chance someone could help me figure out the truss rod on the Schector c1 excotic seeries
Thanks for your help!
What about height at the 1st fret? (Nut cut )
Great Video!
Better by eye and ears !
When measuring the relief, why is it you press down at the end of the fretboard when everybody else says you need to press down where the neck meets the body? I realize it's all a matter of preference, but this throws off the measurement quite a bit. What is the correct place to press down on the string after the capo on the first fret?
Very informative....thanks
Thanks!
if we have like gibson bridges adjusting action with just e and E strings easy and actually adjusting otomaticly other strings adjusting byself cuz you can’t adjust each string but if fe have tremolo bridges like fender guitar I really don’t know which string height what will be and all action gauges just giving 1. and 6. string info. what height must be others? how can we decide other strings height.
Thanks again,
Shawna
You need a slight bow in the neck..dude....If your getting dead note in the middle of the fret board...IF it's buzzing at the first fret...You dont have enough string tension...LOWER THE TAIL.
If there's a HIGH FRET...HAMMER them BACK IN or FILE them...
It's dosnt matter how fucken expensive a guitar is...IT"S MADE FROM
WOOD and METAL...The wood will swell, expend or contract.
You're trippuing becuase you spent a shitload of money on a guitar...
All my $100 has LOW. LOW actions becuase Im not afraid to take a god damn hammer or wood file to them..FFS
Plus mine DONT HAVE TUNING ISSUES. THAT GUITAR WITH THE UGLY
LOGO HAS TUNING ISSUES DUE TO...TOO MUCH HEADSTOCK TILT...
Good luck.
Take it to a luthier, as it sounds like your truss rod is bunk! Call Gibson first before you pay for any repairs.
I'm pretty sure that tightening the truss rod (clockwise turns) increases neck relief. If you are loosening the truss rod (counterclockwise) it will explain why the neck is flat (more concave) with zero relief.
Great info... No HD camera? Would be much better if I could see it ;-)
Pd Money, it would also help to show a lower action/relief
