Porter greetings! When they go to use that much oil then it’s time to do something about it. Now that would make such a nice video series! But if you can’t do it, then find someone whom you can trust to get it done. Hopefully, you will be very satisfied with their work. Please do keep us posted on Ol Red. You’ve made such a beautiful and useful truck with her! I’m not a Cummins man, but it has done pretty well up to now for you, and that’s what it has in it. Well, just wish you the best with it. Blessings from your Ohio Porters. 😎✌️

Can’t wait to hear the old girl when you get it back, the 3406b will not disappointed that is what I have in my 85. I know the feeling of not wanting someone to work on your stuff we had that feeling after having to do 2 overhauls on the same motor in a year because the guy screwed it up the first time.

Well the old saying if it doesn't rain it pours comes to mind and it seems it also means if your an owner driver and working your butt off to get ahead, something is going to throw a spanner in the works !
3406B is cool i had one in the T650 KENWORTH i drove.
    Good engine.
Good luck Ez and thanks for sharing.

    Ooh boy, 3406! #catpower
Hope you'll be doing a done up E model, that should be a great engine for the truck. I always thought the Cummins 400 was the one part of your truck that would be better off improved (and I own both Cummins and Cat diesels).
On towing your Toyota, if the transfer case has a neutral position I wouldn't bother disconnecting the driveshaft. I tow a Land Rover Discovery 1 behind my 40' diesel pusher RV (3126B engine). I was definitely nervous the first time doing it, but I've spent around 10k miles towing that thing behind the RV, and zero issues. Transfer case in neutral, hubs unlocked (as appropriate), transmission in park (or if yours is a manual, I'd probably do top gear). Saves you the trouble of disconnecting the driveshaft. On my RV I use the rear view camera to keep an eye on what I'm towing since I can't see it in my mirrors either. Might consider adding one to Old Red.
    Good luck!

Good luck with what ever engine you go with Ezra, I'm hoping you stick with the old big cam cummins they are a good motor but a cat 3406 would be good too unless you need to spend money on it down the line. maybe another motor from a later pete ? im pretty sure ezra you could fabricate a custom drop plate for your hitch ,i know there pretty much peanuts to buy but it will not have your touch,in my experience these awful phases pass giving lead to better days bud so onwards and upwards as we say in the uk.

The main point of how I biult the Hitch is that it's like it's not there when not is use to biuld it under the frame rails would be in the way of the tail lights. And then it would be protruding underneath when not in use. Already got a 8" drop that should be about perfect.

Cheaper to get parts for and repair in the future than a cat and the motor mounts won't need changing, plus motor matches up to gear lever, is the cat going to the same or will it need adapting? This is a working truck; 2½ mpg just won't cut it.

sorry about your string of bad luck but its a good thing you kept the old mack so you can keep the wheels turning and if you can get a good deal on a 3406 b or c that would be a good way to go considering how heavy you haul you need a motor that makes a lot of torque and if set up properly they are very fuel efficient for the amount of power they make

oh nice... Old Red needs a yellow dozer motor under the hood. I have a pile of spare b model stuff if you need anything for the swap.

You would of been absolutely fine to flat tow that Toyota pickup any distance as long as you are able to place the transfer case in neutral.
I always recommend the people replace the plastic piston cooling nozzles with metal ones. Metal ones are available from the aftermarket and they are much better then the plastic ones that come from cummins.

Toyota says the transfer case won't oil properly. Short distances I'd just leave the engine running and transmission in neutral. Even though it would probably be ok still saves wear to disconnect the driveshaft it's only 4 little bolts

It always sucks to open a unexpected can of worms but at least the shop found the problems early. I have no problems with either option. The old big cams were great but it’s hard to knock a b model cat

are 3408s popular there? that would be sweet as well. nothing wrong with the 3406 of course, really solid motors.
