I replaced the broken worm gear on my 1996 Explorer; however you DO NOT need to remove the speedometer needle and the circuit board to do it, which eliminates the need to re-calibrate the speedometer. You can use a small screwdriver and release the clips that hold the odometer motor from the back, rotate it slightly anti-clockwise, and simply pull it out. I bought the new replacement worm gear on Ebay for $5.84, free shipping. The new one is nylon instead of plactic, so it will last a lot longer. I used a small amount of Teflon grease on the worm gear before putting it back in.
8-13-2021 / Just wanted to say thanks for the tip on getting the motor out. Using the screw on that hard to get tab. Got the motor out in 5 seconds. Thanks again!
You dont have to pull the whole thing apart. The odometer motor twists out from the back and you can put the new gear on. Use 2 credit cards to gap the distance from the motor to the back of the new gear. By gaping it this way, the gear doesnt touch the speedometer back plate. It worked great for me.
The gear is now available for about $10 from Amazon. It is now Dec. 2019. Yours is the first of 2 videos on the 95 to 97 Ford Ranger. Please show a video on actually placing the worm gear on the shaft and reassembling the entire gauge cluster, step by step. I don't think you need to take out the three screws on the front of the odometer, but not sure. Thanks. Good job.
I just bought a 1997 Ranger a couple of months ago and plan to redo all of these old videos with a smidge better quality. I’ll try to get around to it soon. Thanks for the info on the gear!
Thank you so much! The other place we looked just said "you might have to lift or depress the plastic tabs" to get the motor out but didn't recommend removing the odometer face! Well, that wasn't going to work at all. Video saved our bacon.
Good info and well-presented. Found this after researching why my odometer/trip odometer both are coming and going recently. I never opened up the cluster when I had it out replacing bulbs (another of which went out a couple of months later, of course lol). This gives me a far better understanding of how they're both driven (I'm used to my old 89 VW) and what has most likely failed. Too easy - Thanks!
I had trouble getting the servo motor off,Found a fix pryed up on the odometer shaft and removed the idler gear and was able to install the worm gear on the servo motor shaft then replaced the idler gear and snaped the odometer shaft..All back together and working
Nice. Thank you. I would also prefer to change the lights while refurbishing the gear and cluster. It would be helpful if this video included comments on bulb replacements too.
Anthony Hardy the bulbs are size 194 from your local parts store. They are incredibly easy to change. They pop in and out no problem. Any of them that are a little difficult, just slip the appropriate sized socket over it to give you some leverage. I definitely recommend replacing them all while you already have your cluster out.
Thought my odometer gear was broke. It was not; bench testing odometer like in your calibration video. assumed that would run odometer motor also. It is not. Already replaced all senser with the exception of the range finder. Is the motor shot?
So did this actually solve your problem with the speedometer working at random? Mine has been doing it as of late, and would like to get it fixed. Also wanted to know if that new gear was worth the money spent.
Hey Daren. I just bought a 96 Ranger from someone on Craigslist. Hit half way home and realized the odometer was not working. Does replacing the worm gear on odometer update the mileage on my 96 Ranger? As in, if it is supposed to show and additional 20k miles, will it update on its own once the worm gear is replaced?
Unfortunately, it won't. It's a mechanically driven odometer, so the motor will always spin as long as the vehicle is moving, regardless if the worm gear is turning the odometer gears. There isn't a computer that memorized the mileage. There's no way of knowing what the actual mileage is at this point.
For example, does a person just simply drop the worm gear down on the pin? Does it attach somewhere or just fits down on the pin? How does it mesh into the main gear? Maybe its easier than I think when I actually do it.
I have a 1996 Ford Explorer,I followed your video and the worm gear was falling apart. I changed a few bulbs that was blown out and put everything back together took my truck for a ride and odometer or the trip meter still doesn't work. I was wondering could it be the motor that is bad as well and is there a way to see if it the motor?
I did everything you said to do and taking apart and reapply, the odometer works well, but the only problem I'm having is when I go to start the car and the speed indicator moves up to 40 miles an hour even when I'm not driving it'll do this when the car is in park so now I don't know how fast I'm going, I mean I do, its just the indicator is not on the right setting, its a 95 Explorer and it uses this exact same instrument cluster
Check out my other video on how to calibrate your speedo. There was an annotation around the time I pulled the needle off in this video with a link to that video. Hope this helps. How to calibrate the speedometer on a Ford Ranger
I replaced the worm gear on my '95 Ford Ranger Saturday, and today, when I filled the truck with gas, I reset the Trip Odometer, and now, the odometer is not working again?? Any ideas?
You paid $30 for that worm gear? I paid $5.90, no tax and free shipping on ebay. Just do a search "94-99 Ford Explorer Taurus Ranger Sable Speedometer Trip Odometer Gear CC05-2"
Daren, thanks for posting this vid. Please estimate how many hours it would take you to remove and replace the odometer gear on a 96 Ranger so I can double or triple and reach a realistic decision and budget the time to do it or not. It failed at 112K miles. Thanks.
Less than an hour. I have a couple of other videos on my page. Watch those first. Also, read the comments on each video. Good suggestions there from others as well. If you can undo a screw/bolt, you’ll have no problem doing this in an hour.
I replaced mine a couple of weeks ago, Dec 26, 2020, and it worked for a little over 8 miles, then stopped working... It started working again a few miles later, for another 10 miles, and stopped working again... I filled the truck with gas, and reset it to 0, and it worked for another 10 miles and quit working again! Do you think I need to replace the little motor the worm gear mounts on?
Can I just by-pass all the repairs in my 95 Ranger..and just go with a different cluster from a salvage yard..Would that work?..Thanks..Jack..P.S. Odometer, and Speedometer are not working at all..So how about just another Cluster altogether?
Hi Daren I have a 1995 ford explorer limited, my gear that moves the tachometer and the Odometer disentegrated, don't want to buy whole thing, can I just get the gear
Earnest Smith you have to disassemble the odometer even further. I actually did that with mine because I put a junkyard unit back in my truck and wanted it to match my actual mileage. I didn’t make a video though because I didn’t want people to be dishonest and take miles off their vehicles. I will say, it’s possible. Just tedious.
hey bro can you tell me if theres a way to change or reduce the mileage on the odometer the non digital, mines are way high up to 597K and i dont think thats even possible?
does anyone now how to make the last 3 digits tik over only?. Ive got 211615 miles on speedo only want the 615 to move. Dont want it to move over to 212000just want it to stay in 211000 all the time.

Thanks for the tip Dan. Just replaced mine and it works again
Dan S what's the part # worm gear
I paid $17 for the worm gear. But yes, taking the speedometer needle off has been a problem.
Thanks Dan S. Got my worm gear for my 96 Ranger XLT for $9 on Ebay. You saved me some time in adding these comments. Thanks so much.

repaired my odometer and calibrate the speedometer according to your video,, they both work fine. thankd a lot
Glad I could help!
You were right we had pushed the needle down too far & it was making it act wacky. Thanks a lot for these very useful videos.
Nice shot off the wall. Too bad I can't see what you're doing.

Good, informative video. (also the one on opening up the dash) I did it today and it was stunningly easy.

Oh ok. Thanks for all your help.
Hi Daren I have a 1995 ford explorer limited, my gear that moves the tachometer and the Odometer disentegrated, don't want to buy whole thing, can I just get the gear
So from what I can find. On the new worm gear the fat end goes towards the motor FYI.
hanksgavin that is correct
This worked with my 1996 Ranger, but now I have a problem with the speedometer needle returning very slow when I stop. Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot man!!! This video helped me a lot.
You're welcome!

Pulling the instrument cluster of my 1995 Ford Ranger
Thanks Much for theses videos
everything worked great except the speedometer goes straight to 20mph when I turn on power, can I zero it out again?
Check out my other videos. You'll find your answer.
Very helpful. Thanks
How can you do the mileage like if it's stuck at say 285500 miles and you have drove say 8000 more miles how can you fix that problem.

@@Kybucks10 Can a automotive shop do it because mine is suppose to be at 296500 right now but it's stuck at 285500
Earnest Smith possibly. You would just have to call around and ask. So does your odometer not spin at all or it is just constantly behind?
thnx for the info
hey bro can you tell me if theres a way to change or reduce the mileage on the odometer the non digital, mines are way high up to 597K and i dont think thats even possible?
Daniel Garcia Is to
where did you get the odometer motor?
Junkyard
You didn't show how to replace the worm gear in the video. That's the main part that everyone needs info on.

A) That's impossible. They are all linked together and turn with each other.
B) That's illegal.
+Daren Reichle It's only illegal if don't don't tell the buyer and if you put false info on the title work.
