"Being good isn't always easy, no matter how hard I try".
I sing that line for my daughters all the time 💟💟, especially the one that knows what I'm saying 😉 love you 💕💓❤️🔥❤️🩹👋💯🥰
Dusty's slightly breathy voice brings perfection to her performance.
Dusty Springfield was an all time great, no one could lay down a soul joint vocal like her, with the exception of the legendary Aretha Franklin, of course. The two best vocalists of that '60's and '70's era, and Dusty's great songs and performances are still brilliant to this day.
Still listening to this in 2024 👍
This is the best comment section I’ve ever read. Thank all of you
This song is literally the synonym of the word “smooth”
1960s the BEST music Ever..Dusty one of the BEST
❤who's listening in2024✌🙂
Here 5/2/2024
One of the top female singers of the 60s. This song proves her versatility and class.
Is this the dusty Ed sheeran was talking about
The bass playing is one of the most underrated ever. It's just great.
The bass is beautiful in this. I think the drumming is stunning as well... that ride cymbal work at 1:43 seems to kick it up a notch.
I totally agree that the bass and the drums are absolutely amazing but I would also add that the production of this song is so good and if you hear it in stereo and pan it hard left you’ll see there’s no drums there but if you pan it hard right you’ll see there’s no bass there so it was very interesting the way they mixed it
Tommy Cogbill was the bass player and was in a class of his own. He played bass on many classic songs. Kentucky Rain (Elvis) is also a great bass line.
Put the blunt down just for a second to listen to this song.
Classic from a Legend.
Rest In Peace Dusty.
One way to know a song is good is when your at a stop light on your harley playing this and two old ass woman start dancing on the side walk. Greatest thing I ever seen.
Love it! From another old ass woman. ❤
Way cool
Simply one of the best songs ever recorded
Hello 👋 friend how are you doing today 😃 hope am not bothering you??😊
This makes me cry. My dad always played this stuff. Then he left and took his records. Took me twenty years to find some album called “DUSTY IN MEMPHIS”. I thought they had bad weather and a great singing lady. Turns out DUSTY SPRINGFIELD WAS IN MEMPHIS WITH THE MEMPHIS HORNS. COMPUTERS HELPED ME FIND HER
A British singer is singing blues&rock. RIP Dusty!
The first 15 seconds of this song is pure Memphis magic
I think yes, too :)
Oh, your not the only one. This song takes me back to my first love when I was 14 yrs old in hillbilly heaven Chicago I'll. Still love it. And I'm 66 now.
This is what love songs should be like. Every verse filled with desire and passion.
This brings back a lot of memories. I grew up in the 60s listening to my older sisters singing these songs. When I heard Dusty's voice again, I cried like a little girl. I did not know it was such a big part of me.
I'm 104 and have been dead for 15 years, but I still like this fine music.
RIP
🤣😂🤣
LOL

We dont beleive you.
Pulp fiction brought me to this master piece
Two and a half minutes of pure bliss.
What a woman. What a voice.
She was a mess
Yes he was
Amen.
What a bass line.

Boy I sure miss this day!!! This music is not made today. Our country has moved so far away from greatness 😞
Could've sworn this was one of the Pointer Sisters! This woman had SOUL! 🎉❤
Being good is never easy no matter how hard I try 😅
There's no way to listen to this song and not feel like the coolest person in the world. Lord help you if you happen to have your headphones in while in public and this song comes on, because it takes over you, and you _have_ to dance. You have no choice. You're not in control of your body at that moment.
I am an old soul and I love vintage music ❤😊
What a stand out tune this is our British rose dear dusty ❤❤❤❤❤.
Thanks aunt Jodey for showing me this song I'm 13 would never have found this without her
Holy moley. For a minute I thought that was my mother-in-law singing. She sounded exactly like that.
My ex wife used to sing this to me as my old man was a night club owner and promoter who became a preacher when I was about 17. RIP Lisa....we never made it but I never stopped caring about you baby.
😢❤
Awesome...WTG David
Be still my brother 💯💪😎✅
in a song like this hardly no one notices but the drummer on this track is phenomenal. The whole band is excellent.
Was just thinking that. Such a great performance by all on this track
Don’t forget the amazing bass line. Living higher up toward the treble than usual and going all but out of control again and again, as if wild child Billy Ray the Preacher’s son himself were playing it. Maybe that’s exactly what it was intended to evoke.
Bass player too
Great guitar player too.
It just sounds so smooth and soothing
This had to happen one day. Songs this raw and human don't come out of nothing.
Production. Performance. Recording. Everything about this track is perfect. I love how the groove is at once heavy and understated. It's so tasteful. The American Sound Studio house band, man... Their pocket was just so good. It just blows my mind.
Right on. American in Memphis, and two hours to the east, Muscle Shoals. Unbelievable the tunes that came from this region.
Incomparable. Absolute pop perfection from the first guitar lick and of course Dusty could do no wrong vocally.
When I'm doing the laundry it's more exciting now because of dusty Springfield bliss bliss just bliss
I love the way her voice keeps building up into more ecstasy with each verse. One of the sexiest songs any woman has ever recorded.

I swear this is one of the smoothest songs I've ever heard. The slow build up, and the backup vocals are perfect.
Bloody yeah
her voice is so smooth and soft also
Hey joe, can you suggest a few songs similar to this, like slow build up, mood setters, soft. I came to knew about this song when i saw pulp fiction and loved how this was used to set a mood

Who's listening in 2024, I can't be the only one listening to this vinyl hit.
Yes, good person. Here we are. You and I.
Listening in 2024, while taking hits from the bong.
Im here too@@CarterMMD
I listen also…it was on the French rock radio Oui FM an hour ago. The world needs this music ❤

Right here from long beach
Some songs are timeless.... this is one of those songs... WOW what a voice.🎶🎵
I was 13 years old when I first heard this song on Top Of The Pops - Dusty In Memphis was a commercial failure at the time [ 1969 ] but now it's regarded as one of the finest albums ever recorded , not difficult to see why - Dusty would be headlining nowadays filling stadiums and festivals worldwide - you never know what you've got until it's gone . Without Dusty there'd have been no Adele , no Amy Winehouse , no Paloma Faith .
What a voice that lady had .
False
@@thischannelnolongerexists1878 Well, that's just like, your opinion.. man
@@westonadams7135 I meant when he said no Adele or anyone like that just blatantly fasle
That is ridiculous. Adele, Amy Winehouse, Paloma Faith, etc owe infinitely more to the Black singers Dusty tried to capitalize off of than to Dusty herself. If there were no Dusty, those women you mention absolutely could have still had the careers they enjoyed. But take away Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, Diana Ross and the Supremes, and then Adele's, Amy's, and Paloma's careers become literally impossible. This song is iconic, and Dusty does a wonderful job with it, and she had a very good career. But the white British women you mention didn't owe their success to her, unless you're saying she proved white British women could record decent, commercially successful music that copied the sound of Black American women.
True my Dusty, big blue eyes and angelic Blues voice mixture of Janis, Karen Carpenter and Aretha.
Dusty , will ALWAYS OWN , this song ❤️❤️
The first time I heard this I was 6 and watched Pulp Fiction. My music library has been immaculate since. Thank you Quentin.
Well even batman(1981) has a fantastic soundtrack by Prince. Be sure to check it out
Ha! I was 17, paying rent , working in high school
I'm questioning your parents judgement allowing you to see Pulp Fiction at 6 years old.
"I'll be down in two shakes of a lamb's tail...."
O-kay
Go make yourself a drink
Pulp fiction no?

Dusty Springfield was the good ole days. Preacher Man
Hello Eddie...👋 How are you doing today? It's nice to have you here.
Been playing this on repeat, so sad she died decades too early. But she left behind an eternal classic.
This song is perfect in every way! Simply timeless.
One of the greatest songs AND performances. Ever.
One of the most soulful songs ever recorded. It's just as good today!
I love Dusty Springfield! 🎵🎼🎶
Dusty sings this like she grew up in the South singing blues and gospel. Amazing for an English woman.
Well, not really when you understand the roots of gospel and the Blues were heavily influenced by English, Scottish and Irish folk music.
@@terrypussypower Really? Got any links that show that? Not saying it's not true but just can't hear the influence.
I'm calling BS on this.
@@ChristopherDavis-uh1gq You having a laugh? You really don’t know this stuff? Or know how to research it? Okay, I’ll do it for you. Be back in a bit….
But in the meantime think about this.
You’ve heard of Country and Western music and Bluegrass, right? White people’s Hillbilly music…Well, they evolved from American folk music which evolved from, amongst other things, from Celtic folk, and were all over the South at the same time the Blues and Gospel were evolving.
It was a very incestuous time, musically speaking!
@@ChristopherDavis-uh1gq RUclips is taking the piss. Not only won’t they allow links to be posted, they binned any replies that simply mentioned the name of the wiki pages!!

Sultry, smooth & sexy. Terrific voice. Always glamorous. RIP Dusty💖

I got turned on to this tune through Pulp Fiction. Since then it's been in my personal top 100 just because it's a great tune.
This is what I sing to my husband. I've been married to this son of a preacher man for 48 years💞
And what did he teach you? 🙂
Hopefully it's 49 years now right
Hope all is well with both of you. Btw I’m the 2cd son of 5 boys from our pops, The preacher man. We’re all in our 50s now and when this song came on we all just gave each other a look. Until I said you know we all got a big demerit in the big check list in the sky.
It'll be fifty years this March!
@@monaquick2421 that's awesome! And have many, many more.

RIP to my Billy. I can’t believe he’s gone. He lives on through this song though.

I always love Dusty Springfield. Her voice is unforgettable! She's beautiful and talented. I use to drive my mom mad listening to her in the radio very loud and do my homework. I miss my Beloved Mom. I also heard Dusty Springfield had passed...💐🎵💞
I wish this song was 2 minutes longer
This song last forever longer ;)
Greatest female singer Britain 🇬🇧 or Europe 🇪🇺 ever produced ❤

Thank you Miss Dusty Springfield
Desert Island disc and single - pure, soulful perfection.
Sure wish I knew where the girl who wouldn't stop playing this song one night is today!
I’ve always appreciated the way Tarantino uses music in his movies kinda like Scorsese... they both know how to set the mood
Agreed. Not only do they set the mood, they introduce newer generations to so many of the classics.
And that’s a good thing.
He has good taste in music
Was this one in a Tarantino movie? Which one? This!
@@MakeItSo1111 Pulp Fiction
@@nickscarfo6616 thank you; I need to sit and watch Pulp Fiction again, it’s been too long. I’ve just always loved this song and it has always been ranked high in my list of favs. I loved the music in Tarantino’s ‘Hollywood’ movie (with Brad and Leonardo); great movie, imo. Also, music is great in Forest Gump and Platoon,…
That song is so heavy!! The attitude is just there and whoever the bassist is, is one bad dude!!!
2023 and still enjoying her music.
She made me wish I was a preacher's son at the age of 8, and that she was singing this song to me.
Classic, Memphis soul, loved living there.
Dusty Springfield was unique I met her one true lady xx rip Steven
Is this one of those song a man feels bad singing along?
Legendary song Ms Dusty Springfield Yes she was ,yes she is🌈⭐️
Billy Ray was a preacher's son
And when his daddy would visit he'd come along
When they gathered around and started talkin'
That's when Billy would take me walkin'
Out through the back yard we'd go walkin'
Then he'd look into my eyes
Lord knows, to my surprise
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, ooh, yes he was
Bein' good isn't always easy
No matter how hard I try
When he started sweet-talkin' to me
He'd come'n tell me "Everything is all right"
He'd kiss and tell me "Everything is all right"
Can I get away again tonight?
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, ooh, yes he was (yes he was)
How well I remember
The look that was in his eyes
Stealin' kisses from me on the sly
Takin' time to make time
Tellin' me that he's all mine
Learnin' from each other's knowin'
Lookin' to see how much we've grown and
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, oh yes he was
He was the sweet-talkin' son of a preacher man
(The only boy who could ever teach me)
Was the son of a preacher man
(The only one who could ever reach me)
Was the sweet-talkin' son of a preacher man
good job babe
Thanks for posting the lyrics. After all these years, I appreciate this song more.
The great love of my life, was indeed the son (the only son) of a Preacher Man.
Tommy, gave his devotion to me. I was three years older. This was 39-years ago and our love for each other was considered taboo then. His father never would have approved, but Tommy's dear and beloved mother knew and only wanted our happiness. This was barely 11 years after the Stonwall Riots. Yes, Tommy was the LOVE of my life.
Love how old songs got the point across without being in your face about it.
I am going to be 65 November 27th, I remember when this song came out. I loved it then and I love it to this very day. They just don't write songs like they used to.
God has saved ME, just Liston to the Music. We all can use more like this!
God I would love to hear this on vinyl. 🤤🤤❤️💯
Still a classic in 2023..🎉❤

This song makes me smile my beyoncé that passed away in 2007 his father was a preacher Man so every time I heard the song I think of Nick.
She is so perfect , I love this song . It never ages , hey Dusty. 💕💕💕💕💕

My baby 💕 too! How I miss the 60s & early 70s Rock' s zenith!
How the f*&% can you not like this?!?!
It is one of those songs someone can label "a perfect song" and not sound idiotic.
What a pleasure every time she turns it up for "How well I remember," so suddenly and easily.
Every preacher man's son I knew was a total tearaway ! Hard image to live upto...
Party on you kids of Preachers, it's the Ying and Yang playing out generationally.
Whenever I listen to this song, I can't help but look around the room all confused.
