    When my anxiety got really bad I was impulsively apologising so much, my mom got me a "sorry jar" like a swear jar. Putting a button in every time i said sorry helped me realise how much I was apologising and I became more aware of thinking if I actually needed to apologise. I now say it a lot less and have stopped apologising for existing. "Thanks for flagging that" is my email go to for when I get anxious.

      What! That is so smart! I love that your mom cared enough to be so intentional with this 👏🏽👏🏽 we love supportive family! Yessss, don’t apologize for existing. That’s a great way to put it ☺️

    i would LOVE to hear more email etiquette/workplace chats! ☕️✨ as a woman of color, i do find myself overcompensating/apologizing too much, and even making making myself smaller in order to avoid attention and possibly stepping on any toes. Everything that you mentioned about taking up space, impostor syndrome, etc… hit the mark bc it’s what i deal with, especially as someone who is new to corporate. Thank you so much for your wise words,, it was just what i needed to hear! And I hope that we as women can do our best to stand proud in all that we say or do, no matter what anyone thinks :)

    I notice that for my new job, the mentor I’m shadowing uses “thank you for your patience.” In a lot of emails that he may have taken a while to respond to and it’s seriously a game changer in my mind. Definitely something good to think about. ☕️

    Hi Selena! I love how you are managing your response in the workplace as a minority. I don't think I could handle it, I work in the educational field and always wondering if I'm good enough in my current position (but that's a talk for my therapist...lol). Thank you for sharing your experience and encouraging us to do the same! ☕️🧋 Have a great weekend!

      Wow miss TJ thank you for sharing Bc I often feel the same way (like I’m not good enough or I don’t belong) and honestly I think a lot of Women of Color feel that way in professional settings, and it’s something we should have safe spaces to talk about openly! ❤️

    I love that you brought up apologizing in the workplace. It was honestly something that I’ve always done and didn’t even really see as a problem (I have a tendency to be a people pleaser), but your idea about it really resonated with me. Sorry implies a form of guilt or fault. I love this! Thank you for bringing it to my attention!!

  • @alwayskrazy
    @alwayskrazy 2 года назад +1

    I love your “thank you for your patience”. There are times where I haven’t gotten to a task quick enough so that’s a great way of acknowledging that it took a bit of time yet not saying that I did something wrong.
    Email etiquette is so important at jobs especially now more than ever with a lot of people currently working from home. Words can be misconstrued and cause people to feel like they were insulted/disrespected.

    ☕️ love the topic you brought up! This is definitely something I find myself struggling with so much! I almost never use “sorry” or “apologies” anymore, but there are still times where I’ve found myself saying it unnecessarily because I couldn’t think of anything better to say - I think that’s part of it too, we are conditioned to apologize for these minor inconveniences that don’t warrant an apology so I love that you shared your alternative! And while I hate that this even has to be a suggestion, it got me thinking that if this is something anyone is struggling with, maybe keep a folder in onenote, notion or whatever on your desktop with some “alternates” like your “thank you for your patience” until it’s more of a habit to say something like that than I’m sorry.

I lost a week of workouts also because I didn't have a car and I tell you I could've worked out from home but I didn't. But the minute I got that thing back I was back in the gym. So we may have times or we don't work out but as long as we get back on track I think that's the point! Keep going girlfriend you're the best!!

    Watched this during my work day and coming back to comment 😍 I love the vibe of your vlogs lately so much ❤️‍🔥 and so interesting about apologizing. I guess I tend to over apologize especially if I’m delivering to somebody higher up than me and it’s later than I originally told them or something. It’s just so engrained in me but I so agree; not always necessary

    • @SelenaTrevino
      @SelenaTrevino  2 года назад

      It’s so engrained in all of us, honestly! Especially women. And it’s so hard to change the habit lol but honestly, awareness is the first step! I find it harder to catch myself when speaking over zoom but then later I reflect and try to prepare for next time 😅 and thank you bb ❤️‍🔥

    Glad to see you getting back into running. I also am getting back into running now that my kidney disease is staying in stage 2 and to inspire myself I signed up to run a 8km, half-marathon, and full-marathon in October of this year. I have been running small 5km runs once a week on my lunch hour and have completed 1 10km Saturday run a couple of weeks ago after not running for almost 3 years. It sure felt great mentally.
    Would love to hear more workplace chats☕️.

    ☕️☕️ oh girl-this is 100% my life! I have anxiety as a new employee in general but especially now where all of my interviews were via Google Meet and my coworkers are all over the country and I’ve never met them face to face. It’s difficult to read the room with remote positions…your work is mostly what people are crafting their opinions on (vs that plus casual convos in the office). When you’re new there’s just so much you don’t know and you’re trying to get the lay of the land and for me, I want to make sure I’m not stepping on anyones’ toes or being a nuisance so I tend to apologize more than I probably should. This part of your video was motivation for me to relax a bit and stop apologizing for simple things that don’t warrant one. Thank you as always!!

    i 100% agree with the apologies. every situation doesn’t deserve an apology. there are so many times where the ask wasn’t clear, there wasn’t a deadline in place yet someone is looking for it to be done by x date, the ask isn’t a priority etc. i’ll apologize when i feel like i actually effed up but i’m not throwing them around so then i can start feeling like i suck at life 🤷🏽‍♀️ it’s definitely one of the ways i set boundaries at work. men do tend to get away with so much more and i’m really opposed to making the “accountability” gap larger than it already is. this subject is such an onion lolol 😅 oh so many layers Selena!❤️☕️

    • @SelenaTrevino
      @SelenaTrevino  2 года назад +1

      Yes 10000% plus it detracts from the power of apologies in general if someone is always throwing around the words “I’m sorry” it makes it less valuable in conflict resolution down the line, idk that’s just something I also think about. You’re so right, it’s definitely an onion haha 😅

    And yes, I’m so use to apologizing but through out last year I stopped apologizing if it wasn’t my fault. I had a coworker who was always late to work and I was apologizing for things because of this but once I realized I shouldn’t be doing that since it wasn’t my fault I stopped. I began to ask myself if something was my fault and if it isn’t I don’t apologize but like what you did I try to reword what I want to say. I hope that helps others as well. 💛

    100,000,000% agree with women (over)apologizing in the workplace‼I noticed this about myself (I'm a woman of color) and how different it was for my male colleagues (mostly White) yeaaarrrrssss ago; and though I'm conscious of it, I still do it. Often. My boss has even said "stop apologizing" but it comes so naturally. Not only do the men I've worked with not apologize, they don't seem to think twice about moving on , and that's after a legitimate reason they SHOULD be apologizing. Thank you for validating our experiences and actively working to make change.

    Such a great point as a African American in corporate America I used to find myself apologizing. Meanwhile when others would make mistakes they wouldn't even own up to them.

    • @SelenaTrevino
      @SelenaTrevino  2 года назад

      THIS!! While I think taking ownership, is of course, super important; it’s even more important to ensure we communicate in a way that is assertive & similar to those around us.
      It would be totally different for those who work at a job profit or in education,etc. because often times those spaces provide a safe time to discuss these things. But I’m the corporate world and standard 9-5 professions, I think this is the case.

    I jsut finished reading this book called Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell which talks about how there are so many different thing sthat contribute to success. One chapter he pointed out a true story about a plane crash that happened (don't remember the exact details) but the pilots were coming from a Latin American country to the US and they analyzed the conversation and basically the pilots were very apologetic and downplayed things because culturally they're not as direct. I'm overly simplifying the story because I honestly cannot remember everything lol But being a Latina woman, that combo alone made me apologize for everything and sometimes it wasn't anything bad but I always felt like I had to be extra on top of my game and just comply. It's exhausting and trying to learn not to take everything super defensively. Thanks for these chats though! There was another older video of yours I saw where I can agree with you on all your points and it's nice to see someone on the same boat becuase it's nice to not feel alone!

    Not sure if this tracks with what you’re saying, but “Thank you for your patience” to replace “Sorry for the delay/being late” or similar is great. You acknowledge the delay, but show appreciation instead of being apologetic. This is something I’ve learned and have been doing. Ps. Love your vlogs! :)

      No certification or anything required. I actually have a degree in early childhood development and I worked as a restaurant GM for most of my career before the pandemic. Once I started working data, it all came really intuitively, my mind likes puzzles lol. I don’t do any coding really and I mainly work in tableau, access, and excel outside of the specific systems we use at our agency. I’d love to hear more details about your work! I’m a nerd for data.

    I used to be the worst at apologizing for everything & tbh, I still do a lot in life but I think I've gotten better about it at work after the fiasco that was my last job. Last job (working with almost all men) everything was always on me, even if it was something my team lead blatantly told me to do and he turned out to be wrong. He was always insisting he knew best, even over what the directors wanted us to do...and often was wrong. And no, he never ever apologized and always let me take the blame and always made me feel like I had to apologize. If I tried to stick up for myself even politely and professionally, with evidence to back me up, I was being "confrontrational". Now I only work with women and it's much more of a professional vibe, I don't think there's been anything I've even felt like I would be expected to openly apologize for. Your advice was so spot on, you handled that perfectly!

    I appreciated your chat at the end! I think as women of colour we feel we have to prove that we deserve to be there which often leads to the kind of apologising our white or even male colleagues would never resort to for small mistakes or even things that aren’t our fault. Will be doing less of that for sure! Thanks Selena!

    I tried using the Nike running app but I ended up uninstalling it because the coaches talk too damn much. I'm trying to listen to music, or even worse if I'm listening to Audible and they keep cutting in and interrupting my book with some rah rah sis boom bah motivational bullshit. Last time I used it I literally yelled at the air "TELL ME WHEN TO WALK AND TELL ME WHEN TO RUN THEN SHUT THE FUCK UUUUPPPPPPPP-AH!".. I uninstalled the app immediately after finishing that run in a fit of rage. I mean I was also PMS'ing that day so.. I may have overreacted a bit lol
    Also, I'm editing this comment because I posted the above before finishing the video and omfg I have been asking myself that same question you mentioned "is this something a white man would apologize for" for the past 3-4 years because I read the same articles you did and I am DONE apologizing for basically existing. Also, I'm DONE wasting time making sure my "tone" doesn't come off as bitchy when I'm sending emails to my colleagues. I literally would waste soooo much freakin' time editing my words and trying to make my speech less assertive and more flowery so I don't come off as bitchy. Well, you know what? I'm fucking busy. I don't have time to waste being concerned about how someone may or may not interpret my tone, tf? I'm professional, courteous, and to the point, just like every other man in my office. They're not sending emails like "oh hey guys, not to be a pain but.." fuck outta here.
    Imposter syndrome can kiss my ass lol, I belong here too (this is what I tell myself lol)

    I was going to bite my tongue bc I love your Channel but I feel I need to say this. Your videos are about body positivity and respect in the workplace but you make a comment about “white men” in the workplace. That comment came across racist but not in a purposeful way. I think a lot of people of color don’t realize racism goes both ways and when you make comments about “white people” you are being a bigot. Think of it the other way. What if a white woman said something about the “black men” at her job….if racism is ever going to end we need to stop calling out people by their race and realize we are a human race.

    • @SelenaTrevino
      @SelenaTrevino  2 года назад +9

      Hello, I appreciate you commenting instead of biting your tongue because I would rather have an open discussion about these things. Racism shouldn’t be a divisive topic, it should be an opportunity for learning, an exchange of experiences. With that being said, I have to disagree. I don’t believe “reverse racism” exists. Additionally, merely saying “white men” or “white women” is not inherently racist. It’s no more racist that calling a black woman black. It’s a descriptive trait, an adjective. However, I think your argument is more so rooted in white fragility. I encourage you to read this article, or look up more information about this topic on your own:
      www.vice.com/en/article/kwzjvz/dear-white-people-please-stop-pretending-reverse-racism-is-real
      (More articles I really recommend, and are more recent):
      momentum.medium.com/why-reverse-racism-is-a-myth-c2374b8837af
      berkeleybeacon.com/solved-the-myth-of-reverse-racism/
      And a quote from the article that particularly stands out:
      "When you're so deeply invested in your privilege, and in this case white privilege, racial equality feels like oppression," said Anthony Morgan, a Toronto-based civil and human rights lawyer.
      Simply put, Morgan said reverse racism doesn't exist and a person who claims otherwise is "outing themselves as someone who has little to no experience or knowledge of what racism is." At most my comment was an over generalization, but it definitely was not, and cannot be racist. Racism is based on power dynamics and oppression. White men have historically held power over minorities, and they still do. Therefore me saying “if a white man wouldn’t apologize for it in the workplace, you shouldnt either”, or alluding to that, is not a racist comment.
      Another quote from the article that alluded to the point I’m trying to clarify:
      Racism is based on a couple of things-historical, systemic oppression and power, Morgan explained. And as far as history goes, white people have never been persecuted for the colour of their skin-so there's no point comparing their experiences to those of black, brown, and Indigenous folks.
      "It's slavery, colonialism, theft all kinds of violations on systemic proportions… versus feelings being hurt."
      There's a difference, he noted, when white people who are in a position of power espouse a hatred of minorities than when it's done the other way around.” And that “difference” is power: institutionally, systemically, and historically given.

    • @SelenaTrevino
      @SelenaTrevino  2 года назад +8

      I also don’t agree that we should stop “calling people out” especially when it means holding the people in power accountable for their actions or for their inaction and their role in a systemically racist society. This idea that we should just realize we are rhe “human race” is a great and noble sentiment but it’s not realistic. Not only that, it erases the culture, lived oppression/experience that minorities have had to suffer through, and are still living through.

    • @cgurl
      @cgurl 2 года назад +3

      Oh hell nah. White people DO NOT experience racism. You can experience prejudice but not all prejudice is racism. What you’re doing, by trying to play victim here, it’s called white fragility. Don’t do that shit.
