What is the hogaku shime daiko used for? Classical? Not festival? I just bought one in Japan for my best friend that is in love with traditional Japanese music. Great video btw! You answered many of my questions :)

Hogaku shime daiko is used for Hogaku Hayashi the music of the Kabuki Theater. It's typically lighter and thinner than the kind of shime used in folk music or in taiko groups. A hogaku shime also will have a patch of deer skin in the middle of the shime which allows for different kind of timbres and textures. Hope this helps!
