As a California retired in 2020 firefighter of 32 yrs. The comment on using the pool’s water was spot on. I actually used a hot tub about 250 gallons of water (using which would be an illegal in California GAS powered Honda pump)to put out fires during the Humboldt fire in Butte county 2018. If fire fighters and home owners do not use the water that is available to them that seems like it is a lack of knowledge.
I agree with you on this point that hot tubs and swimming pools should have built systems to be able to utilise the water from fires. My current place has that in my previous place had that as we live out on a Prairie with tall grass in the spring and in summer, my neighbour and I kept our grass green and well watered for at least 3 to 400 feet and either directions of all of our dwellings and in the 17 years that we lived there I saw numerous fires over the prairies started by carelessness stretches burn and homes were lost that could’ve easily been prevented So now where I live I live right next to a fire station. There is a good reason for that.
I follow your channel because I was on Maui during that fire. I live in Los Angeles. The similarities are eerie. Fire insurance was discontinued by insurance companies months before. Praying for everyone 😢
Jesse, just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your balanced and fact-based coverage of the recovery. Maui is dear to my heart so shortly after the fires I was following another channel that began to dip into politics and conspiracy theories. I was so glad when I found your channel and have been watching ever since.
As a native Californian I am heart broken about the recent fires. I have lived through many but none as devastating as this one. I have watched the progress of the Lahaina fire and recovery via your videos. I’ve never been to Maui but felt a kinship with its similarities to California beach communities. Jesse you updates will hopefully inspire California to rebuild in a smart way. I hope I live long enough to see both communities blossom from the tragic ashes and become better than ever. Mahalo
It doesn't matter where you go in the US. Our stick and frame building method causes enormous risks. It is the reason for endless fire, hurricane and tornado damage. Will the US sober up and improve its residential construction techniques? Most likely not. Learning does not seem to be in the repertoire of the average US citizen.
Nice video and commentary. Both fires so difficult to control or contain. Fire and wind are so destructive. We’ve had so many everywhere in California. I’m in Maui now and noticed much new building in the Lahaina area. Great to see. Mahalo.
Thank you. I too felt deja vu. I lived in Northridge CA until May 2018 in an area that was literally just below the freeway. This time, the mandatory evacuation area and warning area were literally a few blocks north of where I used to live. If I was still living there I would have had a to go bag packed in case the winds shifted towards our area. Not the first time in that situation. Then in March 2023 I spent a week in Maui, 5 months before the Maui fires. Maui is my second home. You never expect such terrible tragedy and loss but it is apparent now that we need to be better prepared in the future for fire and wind events due to global weather changes.
Jesse, we have ohana in Napili. I left 8.1.23, my wife on 8.5.23. We have followed your channel for over a year, along with others regarding Aug 8. When Palisades was in early stages and a TV news crew was on a blocked Palisades Drive, all I could think of was Front Street. Thank God they got in with a bulldozer and moved abandoned cars. Over tge years we have gotren to know some our son's family friends and know 3 who lost homes. Here in Eaton, right now I only kniw of 1. We were under an Evac warning for 5 days, no power or internet for 3 days. Too similar, but different.
There are definitely a lot of similarities between the Maui fires and the L.A. fires. Also interesting how Governor Newsom was making phone calls to the Governor of Hawaii. No water in the hydrants during fire season. Interesting.
@MS-bs8dd It's unreal. These people paid their taxes, and no water in the hydrants. Outrageous! Newsom and Bass should be in jail. This is gross negligence. This was done on purpose.
@@tooniemama6959 Stop spreading useless disinformation and hate. There is enough sadness without you negative comments. There is plenty of blame to go around but politicizing tragic incidents is not helpful. Have a good day.
@Americathebeautiful49 What?! It's not disinformation--It's the truth. What hate am I spreading? This tragedy happened because of negligent and corrupt leadership by Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass. Pull your head out of the sand, seriously. 🙄
@Americathebeautiful49 What?! How am I spreading disinformation? What I said has already been stated by local officials, and firefighters. How am I spreading hate by stating the facts? Our Paradise home didn't burn. But 160,000 acres and around 19000 buildings did burn. Many RV parks. And I didn't see one pool used for water. Not at Lahaina either. Not the Lahaina Aquatic Center Pools 500,000 gallons. But in LaLaLand I have for the first time seen pool water used. Pools in Palisades are like palm trees, everywhere. But a few were used. I have a 150gpm pump and 200ft of hose and less than $1000 I have the best protection I'm going to get.
@@deborahsolleveld7118 Gas powered Honda engine, 150gpm and 4-- 50ft 1.5" fire hoses. And I can water our 1.3 acres with it too. out of our 24000gallon doughboy. I let it get down to about 1.5ft deep and then stop using it until the rains return.
@@TheHypnotstCollector Rain? What is that? Not all solutions work for all places. Let me add something about communication, don’t rely on your cell phone to communicate during these disasters. Thank you, I've watched many of your videos from the beginning. I live near LA, and yes, they are very similar circumstances. The Palasades fire they think it may have been a smoldering from a fire the week before when people shot off fireworks, it was assumed to be extinguished by a water drop. You had something similar where the firemen put out one fire out that morning and left, but it started again because of the winds. If I have my facts correct. The water did NOT run out in Palisades, it just emptied the 3 water tanks that use gravity for water pressure that water was used at such an incredible rate, it had caused a lower water pressure. The tanks were refilling but it takes time. It was designed for average water use. My family has his car packed and ready to go just in case. We are all waiting for the next winds this coming week. Me too, probably. The Mountain fire and the past Woolly fire was waay too close for us! Being in the middle of a town is no security in these winds. Those whose home were not burned because they had fire hardened their homes, feel so guilty they are there. They should embrace their good fortune! God bless. ❤
I believe the issues you have highlighted as reasons these fires are so destructive are not unique to Maui or LA. In the area I live (Colorado Springs) we have experienced urban wildfire destruction, but not at the level Maui or LA has. It is not a matter of ‘if’ it’s a matter of ‘when’ the next tragic wildfire event will happen.
I would hope by now that it is understood that it was a water pressure issue in LA and NOT a shortage of water. Also and issue with power being out that pumps the water uphill so another reason for no water coming through hydrants. It is not a shortage of water. Very sad in both situations with hurricane force winds. Wouldn’t really have mattered if there was pressure in the hydrants, impossible to keep up with how fast the flames were pushed by the wind. Very tragic in both places. 💔
More water pressure wouldn't have done much. There is just too much flammable material being used in the construction of the average US single family home. We need to change the building codes. What can't burn does not have to be put out.
no city water system is designed to handle that much demand. it is just the reality. that is why larger cities use water tankers to supply fire engines. the problem is the scale and the speed at which these wind driven fires happen in drought conditions. thanks for sticking to facts.
Hopefully the respective governments will get motivated to fill reservoirs with water and to irrigate dry lands with not only rainwater, but treated sewer water (instead of injecting it into the ground like they do currently.)
Is it true that there are bodies that were never recovered in the Lahaina fire due to disintegration so they have not been added to the death toll? Is there still a ton of missing people or is that not true?
I have watched Hawaii fires and now the California fires they have similar reactions . I feel for your losses of people homes and belongings. May god be with you all
God is with those who use flame retardant materials in the construction of their homes. He hates those who are building tinderboxes. It almost sounds like god is just following the laws of nature. What do you think? More science class and less Sunday school next time? ;-)

These are urban fires. They aren't caused by natural fires but by poor building codes that are allowing fires to spread so quickly that firefighters are overwhelmed. They could be easily prevented with proper flame retardant building materials for roofs and sheathing. Once such a neighborhood burns it's far too late, of course.
Wishing you guys well. I'm waiting to see if the money and clout that the people of SoCal have will change anything. The people of Lahaina couldn't rebuild, we're getting rejected by FEMA, didn't get insurance payouts for months and months... Will SoCal be the same? Let's wait and see
There is already a Fire Aid concert planned on January 30. Because the Altadena area fire destroyed many musicians homes and businesses. The film industry just took another major blow in LA. We in So Cal are stepping up.

Problem could have been the power was off because of the winds. Excellent idea if you can get a generator.

Good comparison. Maui originated from electric but no evidence yet of electric in So.Cal. There is some suspicion or arson.
