I raced an XR250R with a XR's Only overbore kit,/exhaust and Moose racing tuned suspension. Still bullet proof and while down on HP compared to 2 stroke 250's it could climb better, handle technical descents easily and the suspension was supple but still capable of big hits. For midwest woods riding/racing the only bike that came close was the KDX200's.
I have owned 2 of theses bikes. A 1986 and a 1990 ... each one I beat the ever living snot out of them riding the NETRA Turkey Runs back then and tons of local riding in Southern NH. I never ONCE ever checked the valve clearance but did change the oil when needed. The bikes NEVER broke down or left me stranded EVER when I went out riding. Bullet poof ? ... Hell YA !
I have a stock 1991 Xr250r Japanese import. I sold my R1 5PW to take up dirt riding, thought the 250 would be gutless coming from the R1, totally wrong, the engine in stock form just keeps pulling in any gear, all the way to the red line. Never once let me down, adjusting tappets takes 20 minutes, why would you ever need another bike. Superb.
What size jet dose the wizard run if you don't mine me asking? I'm running a 158 main an it sputters and bogs just at the top end of the rpm range. Thinking of going to a 152 or 148
I recall as a child my father and his buddy riding their tagged up twin carb xr250's across the country.
He and a group also rode xl125's the same.

Riding my 250R across country was always a dream of mine. Leave out of Manchester and then just go
I’m getting an 03’ xr250 soon and it’s actually in pretty good condition for $900
I wish you guys were in my neck of the woods, I have a 93 XR250L, and a 78 XL250S that would love some wizard work, lol 😅

I have the same bike with Baja Headlights. Not as custom. Rebuilding the rear shock right now.
