The Forgotten Transposition: How the Piumhi River Changed Basin.

Did you know that the first river transposition in Brazil took place even before the São Francisco River project? In 1957, the Piumhi River had its course changed from the Rio Grande Basin to the Velho Chico Basin, in an unprecedented project!
The goal was to prevent the city of Capitólio from being flooded by the Furnas dam, but the environmental impacts were immense! Tons of fish died, species were displaced and a huge Pantanal disappeared. To this day, experts debate whether this change was a benefit or an unprecedented environmental crime.
