I think most people dont realize the fact that Ubel Cutting Magic and Frieren Gravity Magic are being compared to in this epiode. Ubel is not stupid, she's actually using a more pure magic than most mages in this era. Think of her like a prodigy of magic.
From Ubel's "Magic is about visualization." to Fern's "This is the the height of magic." witnessing clone Frieren do magic by visualization and knocked her off the wall without staff/hands.
On another note, I feel like Frieren is trying to make Fern believe she can beat her. Because if Fern goes into the fight believing she can’t beat Frieren, then that means she’s already lost the battle before it even started. Battles between mages is all about visualization. You gotta visualize yourself winning, otherwise you’ve already lost the battle before it even started.
@@r.a.fgattaiguy845 Somehow, the height of magic is being able to cast spells without mana, which I think _is_ hinted at as being done through pure visualization. As some kind of baser, more fundamental aspect of the nature of magic, and not performed as magic is typically done. So, I think we sorta _do_ know that that's what she did.
I see a lot of comments here (and on Reddit/Twitter) misunderstanding something about Ubel. The idea that she can just cut through "anything" if she's able to visualize doin so, but that's not what's actually happening. Ubel is special because she can compartmentalize the frame of "visualization" for her magic based on her past experiences, but it doesn't come without that specific base experience. Which is why she was able to cut through Sense's hair or Berg's cloak, she had the specific experiences where she was able to perfectly visualize hair being cut or a cloak being cut (the sounds, the feeling, etc) that she was able to bypass the logic that the hair/cloak was coated in defense magic and cut them just as the objects they are. So most mages look at Sense's hair or Berg's cloak and all they can think of is "Fuck, that thing's impenetrable" cuz that's how we all logically think (kinda like how we stop trying to jump off high places as kids after we learn we can't really fly); whereas Ubel sees their hair/cloak and just revert her mind into a more primal/instinctual state where she can go "hair is just hair, innit?" It's extremely handy mental trick to have as a mage...but she isn't able to apply the same logic to basic defense barriers (and many other objects), because magic barriers aren't something that's naturally associating with being cut. She never felt the tears or heard the slice of a magic barrier, like she did with cloth or hair. That's why Ubel herself stated that she can't defeat Wirbel or Denken, because of their simple magic defenses. Barriers without gimmicks that her cutting magic can't visualize around. Basically, if it's an object that Ubel naturally associates with being cut, then she can visualize it being cut, and then she can use her cutting magic on it. Ubel still has the potential to be a top 1st-class mage because of her copying ability, but the cutting magic she has reached its limit with Sense/Berg. Ubel was the ultra-rare SCISSORS to Sense/Berg's mega-rare PAPER in a game of magic Rock-Paper-Scissors. She doesn't stand a chance against the average first-class mage as long as they can put up a decent defense barrier and keep up with her speed, least of all Serie or Frieren, until she learns/copies a lot more powerful magic to use with her special mind.
And THAT is why Ubel is such a terrifying mage. On the one hand, she looks past the common sense aspect. She _cuts_ to the heart of the matter. Mages are taught 'If you can visualize it, then magic will make it so' but most of them cannot take it literally. She can. On the other, she recognizes that even her twisted brain has it's limit. So she learned to empathize and learn the magic of others. That takes her from a powerful one dimensional attacker to a very serious multi-level threat. You put her in the company of powerful mages for long enough, she will probably learn their magic unless they guard against it like Land has been doing since the first test.
My biggest laugh of the whole series is at the end of this episode, when all the other candidates look at Frieren with her head in one mimic _with two more already dead beside them,_ and Sense (who'd already had this moment of discovery earlier) just looking like "I know, rite?" and you can hear the *tinkle* of a small glass object breaking as they all realize the legendary last great mage, the one who helped defeat the Demon King... ...is a gatchapon addict. To be honest it is a level of idiocy equal to the Norse gods throwing shit at Baldr and being surprised when it kills him. Sure, let people attack you with lethal spells, obviously there wouldnt be anyone strong enough to bypass defences of your fancy cloak.
@@MiiNiPaa well, it is reasonable behavior for supposedly invulnerable gods and mages, for whom such attacks should not be lethal) You don't expect to actually harm someone or be harmed during light friendly fistfight or jokes with kids about checking your abs by punch. As the Savage, Ubel, walked towards the Test Proctor, the Immovable Cloak, she began to lick her lips. Burg stood still in fear, then Ubel said: "Stand Proud Burg. You Are Strong."
The most dangerous thing about Ubel is how she can break the rules of magic by seeing things in such simple ways. She just needs to visualise it to cut you..and she just needs to understand you to copy your technique. Her ceiling os high.
it's not tho. sense even explained that anyone can imagine cutting cloth. but to actually visualise something that is impossible; stating that it's practically a super power. magic is a world of visualization; one that couldn't visualise, one couldn't do, in magic that is.
I think its the same power Frieren uses. Übel does it with intuition and cant 100% comprehend why, because of her weird mind. She has a fundamental understanding of boundaries of magic. Frieren showed a deeper understanding of magic and broke the boundaries and reached magic levels many mages never saw. I think magic is twisted and manipulated, because they allways describe the magic the mages use as someting they adapt from others(monsters, demons etc.) like the ability to fly. They dont understand the the principles or fundamental Laws of magic to the core, but enough to use it. Thats why they can all detect mana, because they disturb mana to a point its noticable. In this series Fern couldnt detect any Mana in this attack. That make me believe its so pure and Fern never witnessed this might. Frierens clone used gravity itself to crush her, she used the fundamental law of nature itself and didnt manipulated it. So Übel use it per accident, but Frieren can really understand it.
frieren couldn't just copy anything she wants by will like ubels does when she sympathises with you. just like flying which is described in the series on episode 3. it is only very recent that humans can use flight. which they study and analyse for years before they could use the magic enough to make it work; even though they don't understand how it works or the principles that makes it work. an example in this arc is frieren analysing the barrier. she didn't just simply break the barrier because she has a superpower. she analysed, studied it for days in able to break it; stating magic should not be limiting. ubel also mentions why she needs to sympathise with somebody before she could use their magic; mentioning that the person specializing in that magic is deeply related by the way they live. an example is wirbel, who even though, is forced to unalive even innocent children and women in times of war still doesn't want to commit unnecessary unaliv-ing. ubel can simply copy another ones magic just by sympathising with them. on the other hand, frieren studies, analyses and collects grimoires to use magic.
It was just an unlucky match-up that the other mages used cloth/fabric and hair as their "magic weapons". It's only becuase Ubel was fascinated with scissors and saw them cutting fabric and hair as a child, remembering the way they cut those materials vividly. If the first-class mage had decided to make and wear "immovable plate armour" with exactly the same defensive magics as his cloak...Ubel's spell wouldn't have done anything - and he'd still be alive.
Imagine a character being so good at magic that you get annoyed and the universe is like “yes ma’am.” That’s Frieren. Meanwhile her opponent smeared on the wall.
13:42 It was this scene that reminded us, Frieren is the Mage from the Hero Party which DEFEATED the Demon King. There is a reason why he was defeated and she is One.
Yep! She's a killer (and maybe even enjoys it), but she's not a murderer and she isn't evil. Outside of the proctor, she only kills in self-defense (albeit with zero hesitation). Regarding the proctor, I would guess it was either because she underestimated how "easy" the cloak would cut (i.e. she applied to much "pressure") or it was because of "how" she visualizes cutting (i.e. does she picture a knife? Scissors? A pizza cutter?).
@@ArtificialXD I disagree about her being evil. She may find ways to kill people without it being a violation of the law, but she still goes out of her to kill, whether it's necessary or not.
Look, she can kill without any hesitation. Furthermore, she enjoys the process. The clone cut Land and stole his escape golem, then chilled out waiting to see if Ubel Prime would come out to play. And we know the clones are a perfect copy of their originals. So Ubel would have done the same thing if the circumstances aligned and she determined it to be the best way forward. She is a twisted human being. Social norms do not apply, and even the 'normal' human aspects like empathy are twisted. Does that make her evil? I'm torn on it. She's sadistic, but I do not detect malice in her actions. All of her actions are in furtherance of her own goals, whatever they may be. I do not think that makes her evil...but that certainly makes her _dangerous._
I'm SO intrigued to see what that final magic was that either used no mana or its mana was undetectable and therefore didn't register as an attack AND she was able to do without her staff or arms!
They still haven’t explained it in the manga . Lots of people think it’s similar to demon style magic which is called “curses” in the manga but several powerful demons have said they are attempting to find the “height of magic” which is exactly what fern called that technique. My theory is that it’s almost like “magic of the goddess” that created this world. And that Frieren basically taps into the mana of the world itself and the acts why it’s undetectable because it’s always around you at all times anyway. Also there are a couple hints that it may have been the spell Frieren used to kill that demon general when flamme found her if you go back and watch that scene . Meaning Frieren may have possibly known this magic even before she was officially trained. Very interesting indeed lol
Another theory (or possibly variant of the theory) is that it’s U el’s visualization trick taken to an absolute extreme: Frieren visualizes a reality so perfectly that it becomes real without a spell. Not sure what I think is most likely.
Ngl Sam look very gorgeous. This episode was my favorite. I wonder how long it took Frieren to perfect that spell and the amount of spells both of them were using, really was almost a battle of gods, imagine if the rest the the party saw the fight they would be terrified. Nice reaction 🔥💚💚✌️

Now that Frieren is coming to an end, you might be interested in watching The Apothecary Diaries. It was another one of the sleeper hits this anime season along with Frieren, and like Frieren, it features a competent and well-written main character in Maomao.
I don’t know if I would call Frieren a sleeper hit necessarily. It had some serious hype before it dropped and then once it got to episodes 5-10 it’s fanbase exploded
And we know see a glimpse of Full power Frieren. She said she doesnt full power for long time from Demon KIng battle, it means when she full of openings is when Himmel and others is there to close the openings.
The first spell Frieren was using was a black hole, no I’m not kidding , and the really colorful one was literally a representation binary star/planet system. There’s a video out there of a physicist breaking down this episode and explaining what they are , it’s super cool. Also that Frieren “bedroom stare” at the end!!!! God damn she’s so cool!!!!!
The replicas did not have minds but their actions were as if they did have minds. Presumably, that ability to replicate came from the Spiegel itself, which read everyone's minds in order to create the duplicates. Though, given how Frieren has mind control resistance, its interesting how that happened with her. I guess resisting mind control is not the same as resisting mind-reading, though I'd imagine Frieren can do that too.
I don’t think she can resist mind reading . The monster in the forest that tries to trick you with a fake version of your loved ones also did that via mind reading and it read hers in order to create Himmel remember?
Yeah some of Sense's attacks looked fatal 😮. Übel unhinged for sure, but it's okay we can fix her 😊. One of the best eps with the crazy fight and clone Frieren's menacing glare 🔥
Fatal if untreated. None of the attacks were immediately fatal -- it didn't target the head or heart. If the replicas are precisely imitating the personalities of the original, then perhaps Sense really was a pacifist since the replica didn't go for immediate kill shots. It would still kill, obviously, but it didn't go for it on the first strike. Contrast that with Frieren's replica, who immediately went for kill shots.
The replicas replicate the behavior of who they are copying so it appears like they copy the personality of the person, but it's not really the same thing.
Interesting that Frieren mentions that it'd been "80 years" since she used that final attack. Fern was such a threat that Fake-Frieren decided to bring out a spell that was last used to fight the literal Demon King.
Frieren is kinda like that max level character in an open world RPG that's wandering around finishing up side quests after they're done whooping the big bad. She's so OP it ain't even funny. That's not to say that there aren't any creatures or beings older than her around that could snuff her out if they so desire, but most of the stuff that lives anywhere that humans can thrive is probably small potatoes for her.
Uber wanted to kill that proctor otherwise she could have just aimed for his arm. When fighting Wirbel she aimed for and cut his shoulder so she has control over what she cuts.
@@onetom2222 Agreed. Ubel wants to be a first class mage. She doesn't *care* that she killed the proctor and was maybe reckless because of that, but it wasn't intentional. My guess would be related to how "difficult" it was to cut his cloak - it might've taken less "energy"/"pressure" to cut than she expected. She knew of his cloak's defensive reputation after all, so that might've influenced how intensely she made the cut. The theory about Ubel learning to control her cuts better _because_ /after she killed someone also makes a lot of sense too, tbh. Hadn't heard that one yet.
Übel is definitely a psychopath in my opinion. She wasn't really bothered at all that she killed the other guy, she even seemed to be kind of proud of it when explaining it to Sense. This girl has issues.
There’s levels to this shit lol. Just wait until the next arc gets animated. Fern gets better but Frieren pulls off some INSANE shit . She really is HER
You are correct, in fact one of the guys is the primary domain expansion animator for all of jjk from what i hear. This ep had like 20+ highly regarded industry vets working on it. They all came together like the avengers lol. The manga /show has A LOT of respect in the industry at the moment

I didn't like that they didn't really give a W to Fern here, and instead she gets an L. One can only hope she's get a new motivation to grow and a glow up and blow past Frieren at some later point in the story.
I don't see how this is an L for Fern. The entire test's point is about using teamwork and cooperation, and she's the only test-taker who could've landed those hits at all. It's also implied that clone Frieren started taking her as seriously as the Demon King with the "haven't used that move in 80 years" line. Fern's only 18 and only started adventuring/fighting ~3-4 years ago. In fact, I think this "L" was a good thing for her - Fern would not have gotten to see that "can't sense any mana" move Frieren used otherwise. Fern knows that the "height of magic" is higher than she realized now.
@@ArtificialXDyes she took fern that seriously but it took a combined attack from Frieren and fern at the same time to push her that far . Had fern fought Frieren by herself she would have been destroyed without landing a single hit. But you’re right it’s not a fern L she’s just young and not in Frierens league yet and really there are only like 4 mages in the world that are on that level currently
@@ArtificialXD Setup: Fern thinks she can take out the clone, Frieren also says that Fern can do it. How it actually goes down: Fern actually can't notice the opening it was pointed out in the planing that she could notice, she gets completely crushed, Frieren has to do it herself, and it turns into, not one, but two of the umpteenth Frieren is so awesome moments. In other words, the complete opposite of the setup. "i DoN't SeE hOw ThIs Is An l FoR fErn." Jesus Christ dude.
@@onetom2222 Yes, Frieren is very powerful, that doesn't really have anything to do with the point I was trying to make though. I just thought it was an extremely cool idea if Frieren isn't some unbeatable Mary Sue, and if Fern was actually good enough to exploit a weakness of a god-tier mage she's observed for most of her life. And they set it up like that only for Fern to be completely outclassed, unable to even notice the opening she had brought up, and it only turns out Frieren isn't as powerful as herself plus another strong mage, what a shocker. They set up something narratively interesting, only to pull a twist, and make it the most boring, pablum, and predictable outcome instead. I found it to be pretty disappointing, and I just hope it's a set up for a double twist of Fern completely outclassing Frieren later on. That's all I was trying to say. [edited typo]

I don’t know if I would call Frieren a sleeper hit necessarily. It had some serious hype before it dropped and then once it got to episodes 5-10 it’s fanbase exploded
@@mookiestewart3776 more like a napper hit
And we know see a glimpse of Full power Frieren.
She said she doesnt full power for long time from Demon KIng battle, it means when she full of openings is when Himmel and others is there to close the openings.
Every time the mini display of the actual episode cuts off, I’m left staring at Danny’s legs for a few seconds 🤣
Übel is one of my favs 😂 perfectly unhinged
Serious Frieren is too dangerous.
Those aren't bedroom eyes, that's the look that she gave Lugner. It was a murderous look.
That was a death glare. Frieren doesn't show much emotion, but that look was pure hatred.
Great reaction!
Your tagline is correct. Lovely ladies, Übel is a savage. And I adore her for it.
Apothecary Diaries reactions would be great after Frieren.
Contrast that with Frieren's replica, who immediately went for kill shots.
surely we can fix Ubel
The replicas replicate the behavior of who they are copying so it appears like they copy the personality of the person, but it's not really the same thing.
Interesting that Frieren mentions that it'd been "80 years" since she used that final attack. Fern was such a threat that Fake-Frieren decided to bring out a spell that was last used to fight the literal Demon King.
The only reason she was a threat was that the clone was busy fighting Frieren who gave her a big open shot. Fern by herself would be squased
Dont underestimate the sqaud that have defeated the demon king,, they are on a different 💀,, and ofc frieren being one of the squad members
Ubel is Sukuna's descendant.
Frieren and Fern the Kobe and Shaq of Mages lol
Frieren is kinda like that max level character in an open world RPG that's wandering around finishing up side quests after they're done whooping the big bad.
She's so OP it ain't even funny.
That's not to say that there aren't any creatures or beings older than her around that could snuff her out if they so desire, but most of the stuff that lives anywhere that humans can thrive is probably small potatoes for her.
3:05 Regirock!
Uber wanted to kill that proctor otherwise she could have just aimed for his arm. When fighting Wirbel she aimed for and cut his shoulder so she has control over what she cuts.
or learned control between fighting the proctor and fighting wirbel
She probably wanted to pass the test
Believe me, taking off his arm would have made the proctor take 1 step back.
And they thought fern actually beat Frieren last episode 😂😂
There’s levels to this shit lol. Just wait until the next arc gets animated. Fern gets better but Frieren pulls off some INSANE shit . She really is HER
You were right to reference Sakuna vs Mahoraga. Fairly certain that a lot of the same animators from that episode worked on this one! Good eye
You are correct, in fact one of the guys is the primary domain expansion animator for all of jjk from what i hear. This ep had like 20+ highly regarded industry vets working on it. They all came together like the avengers lol. The manga /show has A LOT of respect in the industry at the moment
No way the react pack is watching the one piece anime, especially upto marineford, why do they have such a badass poster of whitebeard in the back???
just discovered your channel a few days ago and i can already tell y'all are real weebs
from your anime knowledge to your fits and your skin... i just know you never go out 😭😭😭
Fun Fact: The Special Attack the Frieren clone used on Fern was last used 80 years ago during the fight with the Demon King.
I didn't like that they didn't really give a W to Fern here, and instead she gets an L. One can only hope she's get a new motivation to grow and a glow up and blow past Frieren at some later point in the story.
I mean Frieren has literally beat the demon king. Also, it is implied that Fern will surpass Frieren....for a time
I don't see how this is an L for Fern.
