@@BodhiGeraci most towers can't handle the broadcast signal from AF-1, as it's a bit overpowering and comes in garbled/staticky as you heard. Nor may it's not like that with regular airliners....
@@heyrod59 motoman's comments were joking and were making Back to the Future references. AF1's COM radio isn't "too powerful" for ATC towers. The recordings we're hearing are not what the controllers were hearing. They have antennas at the field that can pick up aircraft on the ground just fine. What we're hearing is recordings from LiveATC, which is a network of random people who live near the airport and have receivers set up to stream the audio to LIveATC. This often results in poor reception for aircraft moving on certain parts of the field, due to buildings in the way and such. AF1 would not have been parked at the passenger terminal where the other aircraft were. It was most likely off in some remote corner of the airport that whoever has the receiver streaming KLAS Ground can't pick up signals from well. Note that you can hear AF1 just fine on the Tower frequency once they're airborne. Once aircraft are airborne, it's much easier for ground stations that aren't actually on the field itself to pick up their transmissions, since they usually then no longer have buildings and such in the way.
Very professional radio procedure by all concerned. At first I thought that the pilots (actually, probably first officers) who were told to hold for 20 min were slow on the uptake, but then it occurred to me that the special procedures were probably published via NOTAM as a 24 or 48 hour window, but the actual time of departure was probably withheld for security reasons.
First Officers are still pilots. The only noticeable difference between a Captain and First Officer's duties is that the Captain is in command of the aircraft no matter whether he is actually flying the plane or monitoring.

My coolest delay for something like this was interesting from a passenger perspective. We were flying into Tampa into some severe thunder storms. Had moderate turbulence on final but the pilot did a great job getting the plane down safely and stopped. The pilot informed us due to lightning in the area we were being held in place on the tarmac, and you could see all other planes stopped. We were told every time lightning strikes within a certain radius of the airport we had to stop and wait 5 minutes, if after 5 minutes no more strikes happened in that radius we could continue taxi, but if another lighting strike happened we reset the 5 minute timer. We get rolling and lighting strikes and we stop again one or two times and while stopped the 3rd time I noticed 1plane still taxiing to the terminal/gates and Al other planes were stopped. That plane gets to the gate and a few minutes later us and all other planes got cleared to gates. We get off the aircraft and on the TVs in the terminal Casey Anthony had just landed at the same air port was being loaded into a motorcade out front. They were flying her in from wherever she was being held safely for her trial next day. So I think they stopped all the planes using lighting as an excuse to get her plane to the gate and have security get her from the plane to a car out front.
