1:10 I just want to reiterate that it is far more comfortable to have a grip with exposed backstrap that fits well in your hand than a rubber grip that covers the backstrap that is too large. The original rubber grip that comes with 629 is too big even for my medium size hand such that the recoil comes back to my thumb joint if I intuitively hold the gun to have the trigger at my index finger joint. Therefore, I have to make a conscious effort to grip in a way that the recoil comes back to the web of my hand between the index finger and the thumb, but this makes the reach to the trigger sub-optimal. With the Hogue grip with the exposed back strap, the grip is smaller around, so this problem is solved and it is far more comfortable to shoot with the Hogue grip than with the original rubber grip. I feel sorry for the people who did not realize that the grip was too large for their hand and decided to sell the gun because the recoil hitting the thumb joint was too much to bear.
I'm about 600 rounds into revolver reeducation now with the GP100. I'm loving the process but I too am still a better shot with the semis. I still have a huge smile on my face every time.
I also have the 629 classic in 6.5 inch I put a burris fastfire 3 on it my accuracy has gotten so much better I shoot the low powered 240 grain Remington semi jacketed hollow points for home defense and I shoot the Double tap 225 grain Barnes bullets For deer hunting very nice duel role gun
I shoot the Underwood 240 gr xtp's. They are rated at 1500fps out of a 7.5 inch barrel. I have a 6.5 inch Smith and Wesson 629 classic deluxe 44 mag, and a 7.5 inch Ruger Redhawk 44 mag. Both of them love that load, and it's definitely stout but not brutal in those guns. Most people struggle to shoot these well because they are intimidated and it's in their mind more than anything. I may try one of my pistol for elk with the Underwood 300gr xtp for the extra weight, although the 240gr xtp at 1500 does hold together well and penetrates like crazy!!! They'll go full pass on a broadside shot even on a pretty big hog!!!
44 Mag is a blast one of my favourite calibers for sure I have 3 S&W in 44 plus my Marlin 1894 lever gun and still always looking for more nice vid some good shooting
Nolan....so happy for you. My first ...2nd....3rd....5th handguns were 44 mag. It too, is my choice caliber for revolver. I have harvested deer with a 6" 629 & a 9" Ruger Super Redhawk from 45 yards to 75 yards. I am not a precision shooter but it is very effective. If you want a neat responsive target, shoot a large can of baked beans or hominy. You won't be disappointed. I put Pachmayr Diamond Pro. It has tamed the kick substantially. I encourage you to reload if you want to save $$$. Good vid. God bless
MUCH better than your first videos shooting revolvers. Way to go. I think that your prior trials with a large diameter rotational lead projector have given you a foundation for success this time. From watching i can tell you were less stressed an thus the frustration was not inhibiting your hitting. Now ya gotta shoot that .44 until you can hit aspirins on golf tees. Or get nerve damage in your hand. Whichever comes first. Good luck.
Just bought a 629-4 with a 6 inch barrel. Amazing gun. I have sigs, 1911’s, Hk’s, Ruger 44 mag’s, but nothing like one ofbthe old Smith and Wesson’s. It just makes me open up my safe and get it out. Great fun shooter.
@@acratone8300 Dirty used a 29, mine was a limited run (came out 1990s) called the Classic because of the full barrel "underlug" which adds weight and travels the full length of the barrel. Dirty Harry's is awesome because it put the 44 Magnum on the map.
You are actually shooting pretty well. Just slow down a little and focus on a consistent sight picture, and you'll be amazed at how tight your groups will get. S&W 29s/629s are capable of insane accuracy.
Nolan, I carried a Ruger GP100 from 90 to 1994. One of the tricks I used that I learned from an old wheel gun guy to stabilize your double action trigger pull is 2 put 6 snap caps in the cylinder put a live 44 magnum cartridge with the bullet pointing upwards on the top of your Barrel near the muzzle. Stand it sitting straight up in the air off the top of your Barrel towards the muzzle and pull the double action trigger while holding your grip and form. When you can quickly pull the trigger six times without that cartridge casing falling off of the top of the barrel towards the end of the muzzle you have gotten much better trigger control it will take some time. But keep working at it and you'll discover that it's a very good tip. To everybody else reading this just make sure you're real careful having loaded ammunition around a firearm when practicing. If it makes you feel better you can load a live round without powder in it and without a primer because all you're doing is using it as a pendulum on the end of your Barrel to make sure when you're pulling the double action you don't wave the end of the barrel around through the stroke of the trigger pull. Keep up the good work on the videos Nolan really cool.
I had wanted one for years. Walked into the store, like you and found a used one in great shape for 600 bucks. A week later I was at a gun show and found another 5" for 460 bucks. I didn't need it but for that amount I couldn't pass it up. Of course that was the early 2ks when nobody wanted revolvers.
Looking at snagging a 629...just can't decide on barrel length, full lug/half lug. Also deluxe or classic. I know you mentioned you had a 5"...big difference between the 6.5" and the 5" in your opinion?
Nice pistol. I have the 6” version of same Classic. Unflutted barrel. These are some of the most accurate wheel guns S&W made. They can shoot 1.5” groups @ 50 yards in the right hands. That being said, you seem a little recoil sensitive. I would suggest starting off with .44 specials. Much more fun to shoot. Oh! & ditch the hogue grips. I love the feel of them too but an exposed metal back strap really punishes the hand. A larger diameter grip actually will spread the recoil force out more evenly. Making it much more pleasurable to shoot. & you won’t flinch your shots like that. @ 15 yards, that pistol should hit every shot in your paint mark easy.
I shot a 44 magnum once, at a friend's range using his Ruger and very hot reloads with heavy bullets. It was impressive and powerful. I had an opportunity to buy another friend's 4 inch 629 a few years ago but passed. I regret that decision. I've wanted a 44 Mag since the first Dirty Harry movie. Enjoy your Smith; it looks like a sweet-shooting revolver.
Great video! I have the four inch version, and you're correct the recoil and blast are a little more brutal than the six and a half. Still my favorite gun that I own.
I gave my son their one I had with a 9 inch barrel here won't let me have it back cuz he claimed it when he was 65yearold so I will get me the 6 inch model. 44 magnum is the best caliber in my opinion
I have an older 5” 629. Just shot it the other day. An absolute beast. Love it. Started out with some specials having not shot it for awhile. Moved to magnums shortly after. Hard to be a terrible shot with a S&W revolver. Your certainly not. Also own the 686 6” another beast but a little easier on the wrist.
Great shooting you're defintiely not imagining I had similar experience unitl I started shooting 44 spl and 44 magnums my favorite is the 6 inch version with half lug design which I am huge fan of.
That gun is capable of those size groups at 50 to 75 yards or even further and if you put an optic on it it can do those kind of groups even at 100 yards. I know guys that shoot 10 inch steel silhouettes at 200 yards with this very gun.
Put the wood grips that come on the deluxe. The shape and texture of the wood grips that come on the deluxe really do actually help with handling the recoil.
Another good video. Congrats on picking up another 629. I have the 629 Classic 5" like you used to own and a 629 PC Stealth Hunter 7.5". They are excellent firearms. Really nice shooting. Welcome back to the big boomers! Scott
Very nice shooting man. Its been over a decade since I shot a 44 I cant even remember what the recoil was like. I remember it killed the hell out of pumpkins and deer lol. I might have to get another one. I remember it was fun.
Just paid £900 for the 5”…2nd hand, but in lovely condition. New grips needed, as currently fitted with solid wood aftermarket ones…ouch!. Hope you were financially compensated when “seized”.

Mine didn't want to lock into position. The chamber would be off slightly. There is a slight bur inside the frame on the bottom locking lug. Not sure what to call it..not a wheel gun guy. It's my first..but I know I can clean it up. Definitely hits hard on the target.puts a sting on your hands.
Call S&W they will put you in touch with a repair waranty shop. Easy fix. It will get inspected also. If its used the previous owner may have run some really hot rounds through it. have you ever chronographed any of your 44 mag ammo with this revolver?
What’s the strongest 44 round you can feed it?
I just got one and it didn’t like to eat BBA 270 gr , what would be a brown bear round?
You can go up to 305 grn but it's not very fun 240 or over would be fine
