- The risk of a nuclear "Armageddon" is at its highest level since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, US President Joe Biden has said.
Mr Biden said Russia's President Vladimir Putin was "not joking" when he spoke of using tactical nuclear weapons after suffering setbacks in Ukraine.
However, the US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan last week said that, despite Moscow's nuclear hints, the US had seen no signs that Russia was imminently preparing to use a nuclear weapon.
In Ukraine, the war continues to claim lives with a series of Russian rocket attacks on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia killing at least seven people, local officials said.

He’s not joking. Most of what he says is dead serious, he actually believes most (not all) of the things he says. In the beginning when he said, ‘any country that interferes will suffer consequences like never seen before’, he actually believed his army was super powerful and could just do whatever they wanted. I don’t know what twist of logic he uses to brush all the empty rhetoric from the past away, but whatever it is works for him and he’s still using it and will continue to use it. Every decision Putin has made has been wrong, there is no reason to suspect that he will suddenly start getting it right. He’s a wounded animal and out of options, don’t be all that surprised if he lashes out in anguished desperation.

Between the lines they may be, but no Western head of government ever did a Putin and threatened directly to nuke anyone else. I thought the height of the Cold War back in the mid-80's marked the highest level of nuclear risk. Then again, any date after August 6th, 1945 counts as highest level of nuclear risk in my book.

He won't deploy nukes unless something to threaten Russia itself. In other words, as things are right now, he won't nuke anything. And I doubt he is the only one who has a say in this, anyway.

If the risk of nuclear war is the highest since the Cuban missile crisis (which I agree is an accurate evaluation of the current situation), then the west needs to embrace more diplomacy to arrive at some mutually-acceptable compromise to de-escalate the tensions and move us away from the brink of annihilation. Our current stance of refusing to engage in meaningful dialogue/diplomacy in favor of bellicose language and provocative actions does nothing to help avoid catastrophe.

Sadly it's not that simple. Putins actions threaten to unravel 60 years worth of mutually assured destruction. If putin uses a nuclear weapon and the West doesn't immediately retaliate conventionally, it sets a precedent that nuclear states get to use nukes and get away with it, so everybody starts trying to acquire nukes or be friends with those that do have them. The best way to avert this is to refuse to entertain Putins tempter tantrums. This isn't the fault of the West, and the West tried and tried to find a diplomatic solution before this war started.
This is all on Putin. Please don't try to make it out like it's not.
A hard stance helps in countering dismal approval ratings, and thats the real priority.

Our leaders are too concerned with local elections than taking sober, measured and responsible actions to minimize the risk of nuclear annihilation.
