Probability tells us how likely something is to happen. Think about flipping a coin. There are two possible outcomes - either you’ll get heads or tails. If someone asks, “What’s the chance of getting heads?” - that's a probability question!
The formula to calculate Probability is:
P(E) = Number of favorable outcomes / Total number of outcomes
Here:
P(E) = Probability of the event E (something happening).
The favorable outcomes are the ones you want to happen.
The total outcomes are all the possible things that can happen.
Example: If you toss a coin, there's 1 favorable outcome (let’s say heads), and the total outcomes are 2 (heads or tails). So the probability is:
P(E) = 1 / 2 = 0.5 (That's a 50% chance!)
Important Terms to Remember:
Sample Space: This is all the possible outcomes of an event. For example:
Tossing a coin → Sample space = {Heads, Tails}
Rolling a die → Sample space = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} because the die has six sides.
Event: This is the result you’re focused on or interested in. For example:
Getting a 4 when rolling a die is an event.
Types of Events You Learn in Class 11:
Impossible and Sure Events:
Impossible Event: Something that can never happen. Example: Rolling a 10 on a regular die (since the die only has numbers 1-6).
Sure Event: Something that always happens. Example: Getting either heads or tails when flipping a coin.
Mutually Exclusive Events: Two events that cannot happen at the same time. Example: When rolling a die, getting a 3 and a 5 at the same time is impossible.
Exhaustive Events: When all outcomes of the sample space are covered. Example: Tossing a coin → “Getting heads” and “not getting heads” are exhaustive because together, they cover every possibility.
Key Formulas You Need to Know:
Probability of an Event (P(E)): As we discussed earlier, P(E) = Favorable Outcomes / Total Outcomes
Complement of an Event: The complement of an event is when the event does not happen. If the probability of an event is P(E), the probability of its complement is: P(E') = 1 - P(E)
Example: If the chance of it raining today is 0.3, the chance of it not raining is: P(E') = 1 - 0.3 = 0.7
Union of Two Events (A or B): This means finding the chance of either A or B happening. The formula is: P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A ∩ B)
Example: If the chance of rolling a number greater than 4 on a die (A) is 2/6, and the chance of rolling an even number (B) is 3/6, we subtract the overlap (A ∩ B = both happening together = 1 outcome) to get the union. Use the formula, and you'll find the result.
Intersection of Two Events (A and B): Finding the chance of both A and B happening together is: P(A ∩ B) = P(A) * P(B), if A and B are independent
Conditional Probability: If we know that Event A has already happened, the chance of Event B happening is given by: P(B | A) = P(A ∩ B) / P(A)
Real-Life Examples of Probability:
Weather:
If the chance of rain tomorrow is 70%, this is probability in action!
Games:
Imagine playing Ludo. Each player rolls the dice, and they know the probability of getting a specific number is 1/6.
Sports:
Probability helps teams predict the chances of a win!
Everyday Fun:
Think about guessing which marble you’ll pick from a bag of red, green, and blue marbles.
How to Solve Class 11 Problems:
Step 1: Write down the sample space (all possible outcomes).
Step 2: Identify the favorable outcomes (what you want to happen).
Step 3: Apply the formula P(E) = Favorable / Total.
Step 4: Solve step by step, especially for questions using union, intersection, or complements.
Quick Recap of Formulas:
Basic Probability: P(E) = Favorable Outcomes / Total Outcomes
Complement: P(E') = 1 - P(E)
Union: P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A ∩ B)
