2.5 gallon tanks okay for small Bettas

  • Hello, this is Ogles Fish Room.
    I had a question from a viewer named Hugo about whether a 2.5 gallon is too small for a Betta.
    Sadly there are many Bettas living in bowls much smaller than even a gallon
    I may not agree with that, but in this video I show my female Betta in a 2.5 and my male plakat Betta in a 2.5 as well
    I would not put a full size Betta in anything less than a 5 gallon, but if you aquascape them so that the fish feels comfortable, then I think a 2.5 is fine for females and male plakat Bettas.
    Again, this is just my opinion. Others may not agree

    2.5 is adequate for a young betta. Betta fish in the wild are typically found in shallow bodies of water stuffed with vegetation, such as rice paddies and swamps. These places are shallow, slow moving or stagnate ponds and puddles. Some folks really need to research more before commenting. But I understand why the hobby goers got this way. After years and years of bowl keeping I can see why folks advocate for more space. I've o ly been in the space for 5 months, but ive done a tin of habitation research to ensure i have the knowledge to adequatly provid for the fish. We must take ALL environmental factors into account when homing our finned friends. Tank is gorgeous and major props for putting real plants in there. Thanks for sharing❤

      Dear Volcanic. Your comment is very well thought out and I appreciate it.
      In case you have not seen my other videos i do house most of my larger male Bettas in ten gallon tanks, however the small female Bettas are in my three 2.5 tanks. Those three are the only tanks with only sponge filters.
      Others have both sponge and outside filters.
      Matter on fact I just cleaned all sponges yesterday and do so every two weeks.
      I do not claim to be perfect, but I do try to do the best I can for my fish.
      Have a wonderful day.
      Thanks, Ogle

    Hello everyone.
    Not sure if I have answered all your questions, but I want to clarify that I only put female Bettas in my 2.5 gallon tanks. They have a very small pump that I place a piece of filter floss in so it filters large particles out and I replace this every two weeks. I also add a small sponge filter which I also clean every two weeks. I really like these filters because they remove an incredible amount of waste that creates ammonia, which is harmful for all fish. Sadly, when keeping any fish in a small container without some way of removing the waste it is like letting them swim and live in a cesspool.

    Hey Saint, not really sure to which of my comments you are referring, but how you take care of your fish is up to you. I only want you to enjoy your hobby I may offer up advice, but it is only my opinion Have a Happy Holiday.

    Ogle, where do you source your gorgeous wood pieces? Love your videos. Thanks!

    • @oglesfishroom3665
      @oglesfishroom3665  Год назад

      Hey Ani, all the wood with anubias plants on them come from pet supermarket and cost $16.00. That may sound expensive, but you cant kill these plants, so if they last forever its not really a bad price. Plants arrive on Friday.

    • @oglesfishroom3665
      @oglesfishroom3665  Год назад

      Hey Ani, pet supermarket Carries the aqueon brand 2.5 gallon kit for $59.00.
      PetSmart carries the top fin brand of same 2.5 gallon kit for $30.00. You really can't tell the difference. It has led lights in the hood and a small filter. I thinks it is about $5.00 cheaper than normal right now. Now I add a sponge filter and a 7.5 inch submersible light so I can change the lights from white in day and to blue at night, but that's just me

    Hi Ogle, now that you mentioned it, what temp do you keep your bettas in?

    • @oglesfishroom3665
      @oglesfishroom3665  Год назад

      Hey Thomas, I keep the door to my fish room closed and heat the room between 80 and 85 with a accordion style heater, because I have 16 tanks it is cheaper than individual heaters in each tank.
      My aquariums stay between 82 and 84.
      I believe Bettas are healthiest in that range.

    Do bettas need an air pump?

    • @thehappyfishguy601
      @thehappyfishguy601 5 месяцев назад

      Technically not really, they can breathe air and that is what they do in the wild. The pump is for sponge filter which helps on making your water cleaner.

    Would a small veiltail Betta be healthy in this size?

    • @oglesfishroom3665
      @oglesfishroom3665  8 месяцев назад +3

      Hello Saint. Well, I have a small veiltail FEMALE in a 2.5 and she seems quite happy and healthy, but I have some HUGE male veiltails that I would never put in anything less than a ten gallon.
      So I guess it really depends on what your definition of small is.
      Good luck.

      I also have a female blue veiltail betta and her name is Tess in a 2.5 gal tank w/ an internal small filter and she is happy.

      Thank you for your comments and your understanding about keeping small Bettas in small tanks I personally think common sense should dictate the size of your tank. Quite frankly I have put some of my Bettas in ten gallon tanks and they are not always happier. Every Betta has a different personality. You just have to decide what makes yours happy.

    Nonsense! Anything smaller than 5 gallon is too small for a betta fish.

      Good morning Andrze.
      My full size male Bettas are in ten gallon tanks. One male plakat is in a five gallon, but they are much smaller in size.
      My two 2.5 gallon tanks have female Bettas and they seem quite happy.
      You may have missed those videos, but mine have plenty of plants and spider wood to give them structure to swim around and explore
      You of course can enjoy your fish hobby as you see fit. Good luck to you
      Happy Hobbying.

      To me as long as your water parameters dont fluctuate to much, a small tank is fine for 1 betta if you do routine maintanence.

    • @andrzejsniadowski4903
      @andrzejsniadowski4903 5 месяцев назад

      @@jbmjbm323 Would you like to be kept in a really small but nice room? I doubt. Out of 8 betta fish, that I had over a period of almost 30 years, all but one enjoyed peaceful living in a large, planted community tank with a bunch of tetras and rasboras. And I can assure you that each of those 7 bettas loved to daily explore every cubic inch of their environment. Off course, doing routine maintenance is imperative. Again... a 5 gallon tank is an absolute minimum for a betta fish.
