- Replacing a direct drive blower motor on a 15kw York electric furnace on a cold Saturday morning.
Nothing crazy technical, just some verbage giving a little history of what's happened with the heating system at a cousins house. Heating supply houses are not open (usually) on weekends, so its either adapt a used one I drug off the shelf or wait two more days of cold weather until the supply houses open up Monday.
It'll kinda give you a brief insight into what happens on a simple service call on just a basic furnace. A brief description of how the controls work internally is put out there too.
Watching this will NOT qualify you to do it yourself and I would never suggest you try it unless you have a bit of knowledge of electricity and are at least 'comfortable' working in its proximity. 240 vac can and will do you more than a little harm...
Also this is not a 'how to' video, its expressed purpose is to entertain you for about 13 minutes.
What an amazing gentleman you are. I wish I could be around you while you're working...the learning opportunities one could gain from you, sir. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Tristen for the very kind remark. I always enjoyed working around people that liked to share thoughts and information. It always made the day much more pleasant. Some of the old timers I broke in with were not so good at letting go of hard learned skills or knowledge. It seems as though they thought if they taught a youngster something, they would take their job away. Thanks again and please feel free to comment on any of the videos. There are some sheet metal fabrication, layout and installation videos up on my toolbar if you are interested.
@@tractorman4461 thank you and I will!
T44 - you didn't tell me you made house calls. Over the last 4 weeks I have had 4 different furnace repair guys here trying to figure out why the furnace kept failing leaving me in the cold, so to speak. Thank goodness Guy had a couple of plug in baseboard heaters, but man , they draw a lot of power. Ended with me spending a lot on service calls and finally buying a new furnace - got installed last Friday. Expenses I certainly didn't plan on especially with a 6 year old furnace. I should have shone the bat light into the sky and had you roll on up here. It would have been cheaper. LOL. Enjoyed the adventure today. Appreciate the detail telling us what you are doing as you do it and explaining how things work. Mission accomplished. A little heat to keep her warm. And with this Polar Vortex on the way down there, you got her fixed up just in time my friend. Cheers and keep on smiling!
Dang GP, we may have been able to do a video chat and fixed it ourselves over the phone...you wrenching and me yakking.... If that was only a 6 year old furnace, was there a recall or something? LP Gas or electric? Must have turned out to be a pretty major issue. Hate to hear you had that bad of issue with it.
It is just a tad bit chilly down this ways today....we bottomed out at -19 C or -2 F. That's ok, I had an inside job at the son's house today installing tile in his entryway.
Morning T! if you want to email me at gordpotter55@gmail.com, then I can explain. Yes, not happy about replacing it so early. Glad you were able to stay warm! Cheers!
Don`t feel bad for the tye rap...you what you can with what you have and it`s free.....go for it....when I first seen the controls on that furnace.....recognized it straight away....I had one of them for heat when I was building houses in my spare time....Now it`s at the farm and they still use it in extreme cold....they plug it in 60 amp welding outlets....I disconnected a stage on it and it works really well for them....CHEERS
Yes, I know they work fine in a situation like that too. Btw, this is really a 20 kw furnace with one 5kw element disconnected (wires removed) so it will be there as a built in spare part if one of the others burn out. The cost difference between 15kw and 20kw was ridiculously low back when I installed the job during construction. I really don't like the opaque ties, they seem to always be more brittle than the black or red ones. I figured you may make a comment about that. LOL.
@@tractorman4461 Your Tyes are the right ones for you to use....I got a whole box sent to me free for Thomas and Betts for talking a lot about them when I started my channel....we in the electrical industrial trade up here use a lot of there products....CHEERS
I'm not familiar with that brand but that doesn't mean they aren't down this way. MaLine are the ones predominant in the supply houses. But that could just mean their rep is more aggressive, not that it's a better product. My cousin had these on left over from her husbands workshop and donated them to the cause... I just got in the habit of using the red plenum rated ties or the black standard ties because the UV rays don't affect them so they can be used anywhere but these guys are 'iniside' use only. My old man always said 'beggars can't be choosers'...LOL.
That's exactly what I need to do. My fan gets stuck. I can feel it wobble. I think I can do it but I'll call a pro. Great video
Probably not a bad idea Kevin, not being very familiar with what all is involved. A lot of times, there are a number of high voltage as well as low voltage wires to be disconnected to get access to the blower assembly. There's a great potential for re-connecting some wires incorrectly that could end up costing you more money in the long run. Lateral movement of the blower is somewhat tolerable but that is entirely different from an elliptical wobble that indicates extremely worn bearings. Sometimes lateral movement is a loosened set screw allowing the wheel to incrementally slip on the motor shaft causing the issue.
Tractorman44 ok thank you. I'll have someone check it for sure. That could be the issue.
Mexican food sounds FINE! I'd have it for breakfast right now since you made me crave it now! But I'll have me oat meal instead. Projects pick you is right! Just when you think you have everything okay for now, now leaves. But after each project you can say this, what the Canadian Mounty used to say to Rin tin tin, remember that show? He'd say, and I don't remember his name but never forget a dogs name, he say, "Well Rinnie, this case is closed". Why did I think about this, that which I forgot about? I think as you age those clogged, gooey, spider webbed, dusty, greesey, dust filled synapse break loose if they don't get caught on some useless neuron and come out. Then you wonder where the Harry did that come from. Where the Harry comes from my Grandfather Harry, who worked on the mail train for 31 years where they talked pretty rough, as he used to say. So he'd say, what the Harry. So Rinnie, this case wasn't closed cuz another picked you. After all this Mexican Food! Send me a take out, would ya? Catchen up again TM44 my Friend and I Thank You! Now, raisin me cup your way I say, what project is Pickin you this Friday? DaveyJO
Job well done! It works and that's what counts. At least they will stay warm in the cold weather. Wow you had a busy day with all those unplanned things going on. I'm sure the tile job looks as good as the wood floor job did. Yes to the lunch with your daughter. I think these ears heard you right if not I apologize. Hope you and Mrs. Mary have a good week!
Never a need to apologize ma'am. I get to muddling my words most time anyway, especially while driving....ya know the whiskers get to tickling my nose and words just don't come out right. LOL. Actually I met the wife, my son and daughter in law for lunch. And as luck would have it, we didn't get to the tile because they spent the day relaxing and celebrating the DIL's birthday. Go figure huh. Thank you ma'am and I hope your week is pleasant also.
Best way to get the motor out when the shaft is STUCK in the blower?
If the blower shaft is sticking out of the hub enough to get a crescent wrench on it, shine up the stub with sandpaper, remove the set screw with a 5/16'' end wrench and spray WD-40 or other penetrant into the hole and around the end of the shaft to allow it to soak down the sides of the rusty shaft. Securely adjust the wrench to hold the shaft then reach into the blower discharge area and with your hand begin forcing the wheel back and forth. It will barely move at first but once it does, re-spray the penetrant and continue until the shaft rotates all the way around. Sometimes this works well by sitting the blower assembly on a 5 gallon bucket with the motor positioned downward butt first. While moving the shaft/blower wheel back and forth the weight of the motor pulls itself downward into the open bucket. If you have beat on the end of the shaft, it probably has already become swollen because the shafts are made of soft material. If its mushroomed out even immeasurably it will not pass through the hub bore. Good luck Mark, the first one may be tough but after a several hundred, it becomes a very easy job.
@@tractorman4461 thanks for the tip!! try out a 3/8 spline wrench (PROTO makes a great one) on that square head set screw , makes life easy. i'll use a bucket like you said next time , thanks!!
Your family is lucky that you are able to handle so many projects. I think it's the training that comes with being on call. You don't expect the world to work right the first time so ypu're ready with a backup plan. 😊😊
Yessir, that's why I took a pile of 240v blower motors along with me. Basically they are (mostly) 5 5/8" diameter with 1/2" shaft, 1/4,1/3 or 1/2 hp 230v on electric furnaces. Usually they are muti-speed and automatically switch from lower speed on heat to a higher speed on a/c but some of the new furnaces only use one speed through a circuit board for both modes. Sometimes a fellow has to be a bit 'creative' to get a one mounted correctly though.
I definitely learned from this video. Also enjoyed your sense of humor.. take care. By the way La Pachanga sounds delicious
Hahahaha...it is very much so delicious. They have a very authentic Mexican menu and is a monthly delight to the Missus and myself. Sorry I missed the notification of your comment. Thank you for the kind remark and for the time you took to watch as well !!
Good evening Wendel ! I really like your great sense of humor ! Did you see last video of Joe ? You can see my garage and my little red tractor !!! Cheers !
I just got a few minutes in Dave and had to run for a truck inspection....I got to see the Mahindra but i saw much better the awesome artwork on your garage door !! I'll get back over there in a few minutes, I know its going to be another great build by ol' Joe.
@@tractorman4461 Yes and thank you Wendel, it was done by my daughter Marie Ange, when she was 3-9 yrs ( now 15 yrs ) use to came inside my various garages and do theses paintings ! I kept it for souvenir !!! Yes it is a great built and a very strong one i'm telling you !!! Cheers
I too have kept the kids momentos stuck all over the place. My three kids are much older than yours and the little things they made or drew just stay right there. Good memories every time I spot one in this corner or that wall....
That's cool that you had a motor for her! Nice fix! Have a good one!
Well John, there seems to be no shortage of junk laying on the shelves around here. LOL. A regular junk haulers dream it is. Thanks for watching and commenting sir.
That's how you get to be a well known personality, you gotta be a handy man!
I tell ya Reg, just between me and you...just a little too well known when the outdoor temps hit the extremes....LOL. Its all good though ! It keeps me and the wife on good terms, because she doesn't see too much of me during daylight hours. Thanks for jumping in with a comment sir.
@@tractorman4461 Yes, I agree with that good thought! haha!
How's she goin'? Great repair and explanation of what was going on!!! Your cousin is lucky to have you around. Isn't it great being retired? You go from sitting around the fire, to fixing a furnace to laying flooring, and then you still have time to make a video!!! You rock buddy!!!
Hahahahaha That's a funny comment Mike !! I like it. The sad part is its all TRUE !! And that's the funniest part of it all. LOL Thank you sir...you're always in the wings with a great comment !!
Great video. I have a question- I got a york gas furnace w/ a bad blower motor. York wants almost $400 for this motor. It looks like a pretty generic part. How do you find cheaper one that will work on my furnace?
Providing it is just a standard 3 or 4 speed indoor psc blower motor WWGrainger is a good place to look. The standard diameter is 5 5/8'' with a half inch shaft. Make sure you get a reversible motor if you go this route. If its a gas furnace, it'll be 120v and if its an electric, it'll be 240v. Here's a sample: www.zoro.com/dayton-motor-13-hp-1075-3-spd-115-v-48yz-opao-4m098bg/i/G1592297/?msclkid=2a6481ec60251d999cb4e2e93f45d029&Bing%20Smart%20Shopping&All%20Products&gclid=2a6481ec60251d999cb4e2e93f45d029&gclsrc=3p.ds Now if you have a new furnace with the electronically variable speed control type motor, a replacement like this will not work. Make sure you read all the specs for voltage and rotation. If its reversible it will say CW/CCW rotation of it will just state 'reversible'. Make sure you know the voltage and hp rating and make sure you replace the capacitor with it as well. But as always, if you are not comfortable with working on an electrical device, and have the ability to correlate the new motors wiring diagram to the wiring in the furnace, its best to leave it to a pro. That help you at all Jason ??
Very nice of you to fix that. Cool video. Thanks for sharing it us in youtube land.
It was a quick and simple repair, and one I've done literally hundreds of times. Thanks Wild Bill for watching and commenting sir.
Great video....thanks.
Thanks Craig for the comment and fir taking the time to watch. It appreciated !! Glad you liked it.
Just stopped by to Hello. Looks like you have pretty good channel. Where about are you at. ?
Finally got back over here.....John, I'm in the Midwest a little town south of St Louis Mo. right off the good old Mississippi River. I see you are in Ontario.
Nice fix on that furnace. Two thoughts (questions): 1. Is there any way, at all, to determine if the rotation is correct, prior to putting power to the blower? 2. Did you replace the run capacitor and if not, why not?
Most of the motors will have a small rotation arrow on the nametag. Others will be marked CCLE or CWLE which stands for Counter Clockwise Lead End or Clock Wise Lead End. I usually purchase universal motors that have the four leads/plugs in addition to the normal winding leads that allow them to be reversed by interchanging the position of the four leads. And yes, I did change the capacitor. In the old days, 40+ years ago it was not as necessary to replace them with the motor because they were much more substantially built....as long and the micro-farad rating was the same. They seldom failed years ago. However today, they are so cheaply made that you should not take a chance on replacing the motor and NOT replacing the capacitor. Of course that is only my opinion and not necessarily a rule. But if you want less 'call backs' you will always replace them with the new motor. Oh yeah, on the motor rotation, with a replacement motor that is not marked, I lightly touch the appropriate leads to the power supply to simply bounce the motor to check rotation.
@@tractorman4461 Thank you for your reply. Your advice on the rotation was timely and useful. In other words, you saved me a bit of heart ache and I appreciate it.
@@GoofysHatBand Awesome...glad the information proved helpful for you. Thanks for commenting again !!
Funny how you are more busier then when you were working, how did you get things done! Take care.
I think that's why I'm so worn out now at such a tender young age Mark !! Man, I've been making ashes like crazy but if the weather comes in tomorrow night like they say...dang !!
Usually when a project picks me, it's right after I hear my wife say "We need to ..........(insert whatever job she wants ME "we" to do) Ive been trying for 3 days to work on my log trailer arch project. I think in 3 days I managed to work on it 4 hours.
Hahahahahaha.... I feel your pain Greg, I feel your pain.... Hopefully we are going to see the log arch when completed ??
Im planning to post a video once its completed. At this point , I have the hinge points fabbed and the rest of the materials sourced other than the winch. Hopefully, it's done in a couple of more weekends.
I'ver seen a lot of them built here on the tube. It'll be interesting to see your version as well. Anything to make the job easier is good enough for me. I always threatened to buy an old propane tank delivery truck with the full bed gantry "A" frame and electric hoist on a trolly for loading tanks and make a log hauler out of that...but I never did. LOL oh well....
Thanks for the input Greg...we'll be waiting sir to see your arch.
