  • "Ain' It Funny"....Funny me alone before - It isn't funny anymore.
    A song about loneliness, abandonement, solitude, disguised as slightly country-style-song. Like a typical Newley-Song, very autobiographical. A "miniature" - a whole story, a whole life in one song and you believe every word. "Why spread around that virus of doom". Newley's (partly very self-destructive) self expression is very appealing - for me.
    Excerpts from Film "The Small World of Sammy Lee" (GB 1963, directed by Ken Hughes) frame this beautiful song from the album "Ain't It Funny" (1972).

    Newley still greatly missed one of the greatest British talents - a true artist

    @dersinghampault"Not sure about the song..."
    ??
    Please, revisit 3:45 'til the end... that zither or dulcimer line over those chords with Newley singing "It isn't funny anymore..."
    One of his best moments for me.

    At 3:00 onwards you can hear how David Bowies music , singing & lyrics were influenced by Anthony Newly.

    Greatest sad song I've ever heard. This is my favorite clip of very handsome Mr. Newley - his character is vulnerable and feeling desperate. Thank you Polyesterpootang (as I understand, your name came from Newley's movie, and I appreciate it) for posting this and many more I have a chance to enjoy.

    I was hoping to find the film The Small World of Sammy Lee on youtube as I saw it many years ago in a cinema on Wardour St in London's Soho. Fascinating film, but surreal to come out of the cinema and find myself in the very area where the film was made.

    Not sure about the song - but good to see some clips of 'The Small World of Sammy Lee' on here. In answer to persichino, I think you can only get it on DVD as part of 'The London Collection' (£17.99 on play.com) but it's worth it as it also has Sparrows can't sing, Pool of London, The Yellow Balloon and a couple of other oddities.

      I believe the word is _phone._
      They used to use them for calling back in the day.
