Cant comment on that video but UDF_Volume probably refers to UDF file format which allowed you to write files to the cd-rom over unlimited sessions. So they will be bulk burning the winrar files to the blank CD-ROMs, then adding the key file later which is much quicker in the UDF format, where as the standard CD-ROM format needed to be "finalized" and you couldnt add more files to it. Was good for CD-RW discs. Quite smart really when you think about the distribution process.

I was going to say, as soon as he said he was about to put it on his older computer, only mere seconds after stating it was a single PC license, isn't he violating the terms and conditions of the license? I know the odds are like 1 in a million, but making a video about this, doesn't he risk some kind of legal ramifications for this? I mean, don't get me wrong... @@Macil2018 depends "Single User License" can mean one of two things - can be used on one computer or can be only used on one computer at one time - depends on how or if it is specified in the end user license agreement for the software

I bought a key for WinRAR 3.xx years ago when it was on sale on a resellers website (it was like $5), unfortunately doesn't work with WinRAR 4.xx and newer
Does that matter. Just continue using the 3.xx version. The 4.xx doesn't offer any more useful features. Probably just more bloat. You can still open the same rar files.

I've had a legit licensed copy of WinRAR since forever, started using it when it only ran in pure DOS (officially named RAR at that time). I initially bought it to be able to add "Authenticity Verification" to my archives. This functionality has however been removed from the application a few versions back, but it is still pleasant not seeing annoying reminders at startup. Still using my original key that I got at the time of purchase.
I imagine that day in RAR HQ they saw they finally sold a single user licence ,and it was like the scene in Ghostbusters where Janine stands up shouting "We got one" followed byfrantically trying to find where they put their box of CD-Rs.
@@edsiefker1301 I work hours sometimes with archives. All the stuff. And winrar does it faster, believe me. Not only that, complete programms can be opened inside winrar. /zip only works if everything is in one place.

Yup, very smart. The IT nerd Sys Admin uses WinRAR over WinZip because it has better compression, brings the disk into work and suddenly the enterprise with 10,000 users has to buy 10,000 licences.

There were some sophisticated bots on AOL that would mail you all the attachments from a chat room request (IRC based?) My friends used it back in the day. I remember thinking it was quite user-friendly.
All software should work like this, every key works backwards with previous versions. Think about it, it's just double dipping because your definitely not getting new features going backwards...
The same key working on old versions also mean that Key Generator would generate valid keys for old and new versions. That's why almost noone does that :-)
@@igorthelight this isn't necessarily true. Depends on how the key generation works, but you could generate keys which respond valid for a previous version of software, but contain something which only new versions of software will know to look for (and render older keys invalid)

Hey clint... just something i wanted to say that came to my mind recently: Whenver i watch your videos about retro pc stuff i get that odd nostalgia feeling like when i was a kid when my dad still lived in our house.. when i got my first 386 with only dos on it and later win 3.1 ... and then on the 486 with dos and 3.11 we forced (me and my older half brother) win 95 on... i dont know why but thinking of those old "easy" times where my only issue was thinking what i want to play next (sc2000 or sim tower mostly) .. made me very happy... The 95 and 98' one was the most special for me. So much personal history there. Kids these days simply cannot appreciate the absolute exhalation we had back then.
"Ehh, I dunno what we learned here, but we learned something." Honestly, I think something rather good was learned here, especially for archivists and tech historians such as yourself, Clint. Being able to use the same key with ease across 20+ years of versions and hardware makes it very flexible rather than being limited to a handful of systems. Rather valuable. Sure you don't technically need the key for home use, but it's good to know that if you do have the key it's a powerful one. Money well spent, I'd say. And likewise looking forward to seeing the CD they send out.
Fun fact: You can drop the rarreg.key file into the same folder as the installer then when you install it will pick the key up and register itself automatically :)

I still useJasc Paint shop pro 5 to edit photos occationally. It can open any image format. I haven't even looked at the Corel version. Its probably not as good.

I've kept and used the same installation package for winRar for decades now, every time I get a new computer I just move the file over from my old hard drive and I haven't even thought about it until now. Kind of mind blowing.
So long as it's for a private end user and not for a franchise business it's kosher, like how you can install disc-based PC software across multiple systems unless there's a hard-coded DRM install limit.

I'm starting to think they might have thought of another reason why WinRAR would still be usable after the trial expires.. It's so that you can still use it to open that rarkey.rar.
I don't think that had anything to do with it. As we saw in the video, that feature wasn't implemented in the earlier versions and the software was still fully functional after the trial period expired. Another reason why that would likely not factor in is that for many (if not most) of the proprietary archivers of the era, the uncompression tool was free. I believe that was also the case for RAR.

I remember when I was a kid, I never realized you could keep using Winrar past the trial, and didn't know that 7zip was a thing. I ended up going a year or so thinking I had absolutely no way to open rar files without shelling out money, and tried to avoid them as much as I could, which was much easier said than done at the time.

I still use Winrar. The “nag” screen actually isn’t that annoying and I would say gives 7zip a run for its money, but I think pirating Winrar is the dumbest thing I ever heard. There’s basically nothing different between the trail version and the full version(besides the nag screen) But I will buy it as a way of saying thank you, but that’s later on, so I still have the trail version.
There is one feature that full has and trial doesn't, and that is recovery record, that they claim it protects the rar file against data corruption... not sure how it works, and if it's useful at all

Cant comment on that video but UDF_Volume probably refers to UDF file format which allowed you to write files to the cd-rom over unlimited sessions. So they will be bulk burning the winrar files to the blank CD-ROMs, then adding the key file later which is much quicker in the UDF format, where as the standard CD-ROM format needed to be "finalized" and you couldnt add more files to it. Was good for CD-RW discs. Quite smart really when you think about the distribution process.

I was going to say, as soon as he said he was about to put it on his older computer, only mere seconds after stating it was a single PC license, isn't he violating the terms and conditions of the license? I've had a legit licensed copy of WinRAR since forever, started using it when it only ran in pure DOS (officially named RAR at that time). I initially bought it to be able to add "Authenticity Verification" to my archives. This functionality has however been removed from the application a few versions back, but it is still pleasant not seeing annoying reminders at startup. Still using my original key that I got at the time of purchase.

Can we all take a moment to appreciate the simple fact that in 2021, when companies basically use every oportunity to milk the consumer dry, the creators of WinRAR (given the fact that they still support and update it) still haven't changed their endless free trial system.
Because probably its better for the long run. Home users get used to Winrar, so when enterprises look for a compresion tool, they already know winrar and go with that.

All software should work like this, every key works backwards with previous versions.
Think about it, it's just double dipping because your definitely not getting new features going backwards...
The same key working on old versions also mean that Key Generator would generate valid keys for old and new versions.
That's why almost noone does that :-)

Hey clint... just something i wanted to say that came to my mind recently: Whenver i watch your videos about retro pc stuff i get that odd nostalgia feeling like when i was a kid when my dad still lived in our house.. when i got my first 386 with only dos on it and later win 3.1 ... and then on the 486 with dos and 3.11 we forced (me and my older half brother) win 95 on... i dont know why but thinking of those old "easy" times where my only issue was thinking what i want to play next (sc2000 or sim tower mostly) .. made me very happy... Thank you :-)

Honestly, I think something rather good was learned here, especially for archivists and tech historians such as yourself, Clint. Being able to use the same key with ease across 20+ years of versions and hardware makes it very flexible rather than being limited to a handful of systems. Rather valuable.
Sure you don't technically need the key for home use, but it's good to know that if you do have the key it's a powerful one. Money well spent, I'd say. And likewise looking forward to seeing the CD they send out.

Fun fact: You can drop the rarreg.key file into the same folder as the installer then when you install it will pick the key up and register itself automatically :)

I've kept and used the same installation package for winRar for decades now, every time I get a new computer I just move the file over from my old hard drive and I haven't even thought about it until now. Kind of mind blowing.

It's so that you can still use it to open that rarkey.rar.
I don't think that had anything to do with it. As we saw in the video, that feature wasn't implemented in the earlier versions and the software was still fully functional after the trial period expired.
Another reason why that would likely not factor in is that for many (if not most) of the proprietary archivers of the era, the uncompression tool was free. I believe that was also the case for RAR.

What an incredible trip down memory lane of Windows operating systems in the process, or at least those with the older WinRAR versions, interesting to see how far back it actually worked with the key file, until finding out the first couple of versions used text for the registration process!😮

I remember when I was a kid, I never realized you could keep using Winrar past the trial, and didn't know that 7zip was a thing. I ended up going a year or so thinking I had absolutely no way to open rar files without shelling out money, and tried to avoid them as much as I could, which was much easier said than done at the time.

I still use Winrar. The “nag” screen actually isn’t that annoying and I would say gives 7zip a run for its money, but I think pirating Winrar is the dumbest thing I ever heard. There’s basically nothing different between the trail version and the full version(besides the nag screen) But I will buy it as a way of saying thank you, but that’s later on, so I still have the trail version.

There is one feature that full has and trial doesn't, and that is recovery record, that they claim it protects the rar file against data corruption... not sure how it works, and if it's useful at all
