In order to be part of a crowd whether it be political or religious it doesn't matter, you will have to sacrifice some of your intelligence to be a part of that crowd. They will never admit that they are just two sides of the same coin because they can't see it.
No, sacrificing intelligence is not a prerequisite. The early catholic church fathers were among the most intelligent thinkers in history. Look up some of people responsible for the groundbreaking scientific discoveries during the Enlightenment. Several were theologians and most were very devout Christians, along with other faith traditions.
This is such a US centric thing. I don’t think religion as part of the culture wars is as important in any other country. At least not here in Finland, where faith is rarely discussed in politics.
Here in Brazil religion is part of culture wars, specially because of fast growing of Evangelicals in a traditionally catholic country, and the evangelicals here are eager to impose their religion's view on all institutions of Brazil if possible

As someone who grew up in a very conservative religious community and had to leave in order to genuinely encounter Christ I have not been comfortable with Peterson’s admonitions to everyone to “get back to church”. Church was the Rich men north of Richmond and inspired as much frustration as what I heard in Oliver Anthony’s song. It was a place where decisions were made to control for the purpose of profit. So different to Jesus’ invitation to the weary to come to Him for rest to learn the unforced rhythms of grace. With the promise that He was gentle and humble and would put nothing ill fitting on His followers. I recently heard a wealthy actor talking about the utility of religion and the part it had played in his success and wise decision making. Similar to Shapiro’s claim that it’s the greatest self help book. He went on to admit that the Proverbs had utility but he had no idea what to do with or use for the burning bush and other miracles. That’s because the man in need of a miracle is the one who can no longer help himself. He is the one standing in front of Jesus like Andrew holding five loaves and two small fishes. He’s just been told to feed five thousand people and says “What is so little among so many?” He is Abraham looking at his body which is old and decrepit after God has said he will have a son. Standing in this place and not wavering in your faith is what I believe Oliver Anthony was trying to express. “The true man trusts in a strength which is not his, and which he does not feel…and seeks Him who is his life, as the natural, simple cure of all that is amiss with him and receives the power to do, and be, and live, even when he is weary,-this is the victory that overcomes the world.” George MacDonald This has nothing to do with utility and self help.

Fascinating contrast between sincere faith and ideology. Good on you to assume the best of Oliver's faith until proven otherwise. I also hope he stays separate from the ideologies that want to co-opt his popularity. And I hope he is genuine in his attempt to confront hypocrites on all sides, rather than just adding one more voice to a seething grievance culture. @My-cat-is-staring-at-you I couldn't agree more. As an Episcopal priest, I want to give you a slow clap. You got it. Either God and Religion are ultimately valuable because of what they are in Godself, or they are simply descriptive with no normative power or value. What is completely illogical is the idea that they are valuable for strictly utilitarian purposes of moral formation. We have entirely rational and objective forms of morality- from Kant to Mill to Marx to Rand to Singer- if we want morality without religion. The reason to be religious is not to be moral, but to be spiritually transformed by a relationship with the Divine.
I'm not a fan of justifying Christianity via conseqeuntialist arguments, but I get why it's popular to do that nowadays. Christianity (and other religions) have largely been attacked on consequentialist grounds by their opponents and it's hard to resist responding in kind. When you're critiqued politically, it's hard to resist responding politically, even if doing so ultimately betrays a position of weakness. Though it's also worth noting that direct open antitheism has become somewhat unpopular as a progressive culture war position over the past decade for (I'd argue) the same reason that being "gender critical" has. Things have changed direction.

Excellent video! The great 16th century reformer, Martin Luther, addressed several of these issues (and more) in his Commentary on the Magnificat. It was basically an extended ‘advice column’ written for the benefit of a 19-year-old prince who was destined to be one of the most powerful men in Europe. In the commentary, which addresses the faithful management of wisdom, power and wealth, Luther early on establishes that Reason is incapable of leading faith, and if it tries, it will necessarily lose its way, so Faith must rightly lead the Christian in love and trust of God, even (and especially) when Reason argues otherwise.
I hate how when someone hears “conspiracy” they automatically assume that it’s either a truth or a lie almost instantly. I wish we could separate these ideas from each other and say some people conspire but not all theories are true
Wasn't expecting such an intellectual analysis based on the title. I agree with your critique of Peterson and Shapiro but disagree with your premise that religion shouldn't be promoted by appealing to its wisdom. The specific claims of major religions can't be very well investigated, so it makes sense that religions are assessed based on the wisdom of their teachings.
9:34 any respect for a father isn’t just because of some superiority in the father rather it is the love for the child and the greater experience they have. A respect for the person that helped make you and cares for you more than most any other person on the planet. I suppose that some fathers have sacrificed their right to respect with their abandonment of the duties a father should embody. But then they have fallen from a father to a genetic donor: not a person to be respected beyond the thanks for existence. This relationship is vastly different than that held with a deity. Mostly because the relationship is based on facts not faith. An easily measured set of conditions and actions. That most religions speak of their deity as The Father is to simply inspire a relatable worldly relationship to a difficult concept.
Having watched some debates/discussions between Peterson and Matt Dillahunty, or Sam Harris, it's really hard to imagine Peterson would actually engage in debate or discussion.
@@jimtroeltsch5998 This has to be the most skewed observation about Peterson and/or his debate skills i've ever seen. Sam Harris *admits* JP is an amazing Debater, and admits he had his views altered by him.. albeit not completely. Both are actually good friends. As for matt dillahunty: the minute he got triggered when being confronted with the obvious no-scotsman of "muh real humanism has never been tried yet" he lost the debate. The man is know to lose arguments when he doesn't have a mute button.
@@jacobdriscoll8276 you seem to struggle with/hate style over substance. Thats ok, not all people can stand sophistication above comfort level, its something you actually share with Matt dillahunty and his "new atheist" ilk..who has with his philosophical hobbyism all the intellectual subtlety of a baboon. Ask him to describe Human Beings on a fundamental level and he will say: “just sacks of meat because that’s what science tells us” That aside its still, speaking of fallacies and baseless assertions. A pretty blind/baseless assertion with regard to Peterson. The fact that it goes over your head doesn’t mean he doesn’t engage in debate or discussion
Joe Rogan is a voting Democrat who stated he will never vote for Trump. What made him right-wing was getting alternative treatment to 19, the left-wing media lied and made fun of him for that. Once they painted him as an anti-vaxxer, he must be every other right-wing trope as well. If Jared Bauer is calling Joe Rogan right-wing, he ironically shows how tribal and valid his opinions are.
Ita fascinating to see right wing figure heads appealing to the secular applicability of religion as a strategic move to navigate an increasingly less religious world. The pandering performance is unbearable and as stated it degrades and profanes the very thing the profess to worship and value.
Your analysis is engaging and thought-provoking, as usual. However, I cannot agree with your point. There is a massive difference between embracing religious values as guidance to live one's life and using them as a framework to organize society. I think you are conflating those two things, and as a result, you end up offering an inaccurate representation of the conservative point. Your analysis would be correct if we were talking about religious men appealing to pragmatic arguments to gain adepts. Organizing one's personal life according to religion is a matter of faith. It is not something you can be "argued into" but an experience you must have. Appealing to convenience or any other "mundane" reasoning to bring others into one's faith would be trivializing the highly revealed truth (I am sure that conservatives agree with you on that point). However, things are different when the goal is not to bring someone into religion but to argue for the best path to organize society. In that case, conservatives know they need to talk to an audience that often does not share their faith, so they need to use discursive and pragmatic arguments to convince them. In that case, the stakes are not the transcendent issues of saving one's soul but the mundane matters of organizing our time on earth. To me, Shapiro and Peterson are answering the challenges that figures like Christopher Hitchens or Richard Dawkins posed during the 90s and 2000s. The main criticism against conservatives was that they wanted to impose their religious dogma on the rest of society. They were trying to organize everyone else's life according to revealed commands not up for debate. That criticism was valid on principle and factually correct. However, now, instead of saying: "follow the Bible because my God says so," they say: "follow the bible because their principles improve our life." I am not saying that I find that argument convincing or appealing, but it is certainly an improvement from what conservatives used to do. They are separating the "sublime and faith-based" approach required for religious proselytism from the pragmatical and mundane argumentation that should be used in the secular political realm.
Damn Jared. This was darn good. If you don’t believe in a single word of the Bible, you have perhaps done it a great service. Love this analysis. Will definitely read the author you mentioned in this video.
Sorry. Maybe it’s because I absolutely hate Ronald Reagen and Reaganism. But I’m not gonna let go of the fudge round line. There are thousands of ways he could’ve written class warfare But he chose to use that line which could/Was interpreted the way it was. It’s on him that he wrote the line And distracted the rest of us from taking in a lot of the other part of the song. So I feel a little sympathy for the man or anyone that’s trying to defend him.
You're just going to have to accept that creating a better society doesn't involve enabling people to live a parasitic lifestyle and it involves actual moral claims of right and wrong.
@@RA-ie3ss “parasitic” You expose the fact that you’re not interested in a better society. Most people on welfare aren’t Parasites. In fact they are WORKING poor. Again 43 years of hearing the falsehood of welfare queens. You just going to have to live with that people don’t buy Reaganism anymore. So you And your outdated ideology can take a hike..
Jared thanks for this video, a nuanced take as always. I do wish you would spend more time addressing the welfare queen matter as while the first verse portrays despair and anger at our economic system the direction of that anger towards welfare recipients is a long standing and harmful practice and deserves more than a passing mention.
You’ve given me a lot to think about. What do you think of Kant’s critique of Burke’s description of sublime, pointing out that you must rationalize sensory data in order to be awe struck? Does that mean Shapiro can experience the sublime by contemplating the utility of the Torah and Peterson genuinely awe struck and emotionally moved by the archetypical quality of Jesus?
Every religion was always already ideology, and every ideology is always already a religion, feel free to point out a diffrence, these concepts might be refering to the same thing.
"Intoxicated with a mythology of pure reason, [they] set out to purge humanity of its essential mystery, converting the mind itself into a sort of material object as mechanically predictable as the circulation of the blood. It is, in short, a kind of madness of Reason - a hubristic campaign to blueprint our elusive spiritual being, and to do so, moreover, for the purposes of controlling and manipulating it." Gotta remember this one. Terry Eagleton. Thanks for the reference.
I came down to the comments to tell you what an incredible video you put together... but then you said you're playing Bloodborne and it was like you wiped the last 15 minutes of my memory with a neuralizer. How are you liking it? On a scale from 9.5 to 10, how would you rate it? And why 10?
The Left should see the few shortcomings of Anthony's song as evidence of where we need to educate our fellow humans on why they suffer. If we don't, the publicized lies of the right wing are the only lens they'll be able to see through.
I believe we need to educate our fellow Americans as to how little we truly suffer in comparison with… well every human that ever lived. We are the most spoiled people to ever live, the most privileged, the most self absorbed. Why can we not step back and smell the roses? While we fight over everything from the top of the world there is more slavery happening right now than any time on earths history.. but we make “so and so said something mean” out to be the hugest showing of inequality and human suffering… we argue about it on $1000 cell phones from our heated homes often on our working toilets… we tell each other plenty about how and why were suffering but I never see anyone mention how wonderful and convenient our lives are how we should appreciate all the gifts in our lives instead of focusing on the negatives at all times. Got the record the government loves to see us stuck complaining so they can keep using one side against the other. Thoughts?
@@jacobdriscoll8276 I just asked what lies you were referring to. I'm confused as to why you're accusing me of lack of critical thinking skills when I'm asking for the examples and reasoning behind your accusations.
In exploring the practicalities of religion I think there's a more charitable interpretation than just "benevolent show business". Our world is increasingly non-religious and hitting a non-believer with "because God" isn't convincing, whereas "because of these practical results" can be the first step of a long journey.
I think he is right leaning. But with only two real parties we all lean one way or another. Can’t hate on a dude for having an opinion. If you listen to the music and what he says it’s pretty clear he’s disappointed with both parties. Like most of us. Plus, I really doubt he ever thought anyone would hear his work but a small few. It catching fire and spreading across the country was not part of his plan.
This guy canceled a show over high ticket prices....sounds like a hero....no,he is just another grifter, tickets were$120,he said was too much.there were only 1500 tickets and his fee was $110,000 or so.he was firm on his fee so that meant the venue, security company, insurance for the event and the event staff and other pleebs had to take a pay cut for him to still get his lion's share to reduce the ticket price and protect his image.this guy is just another diva in for the cash grab.
Wow. That was enlightening. I have never heard that said so well. I have an aunt that is deeply religious but she never admits to it. Everytime I speak to her she tells me that she isn't religious, she is just following the "the word of the one true God" (she's evangelical Christian btw). I 've always told her that what she's saying is the same said by most followers of most religions. But still, she's unable or unwilling to recognized that. Your analysis provided me with references/tools to better understand this. Thanks for that. Kudos from Brazil.
I've heard countless people on the left speak on all the lyrics, not just the last verse. none of them said they disagree with the clear reference to Epstein. I've heard some say (and I agree) that it's a weird verse and it's jarring the first time you hear it. but no one is denying that most of it comes from a sincere place and that a lot of us on both sides relate to a lot of the messaging. and I've heard many rightly criticize the last verse because it's ignorant and short sighted and has little to do w out inability to take care of our homeless population. to argue the contrary and criticize "the left" in the way you do here is inaccurate and dishonest and comes off like you have something against "them"
So as a person on Bernie left I can tell you right now that fudge round line is bullshit. And his subsequent apologies doesn’t really address that line. He had 1000 ways to Sunday to write a song about class warfare. And he decided to concentrate on that? No I don’t fly by me and Pretty much destroys any goodwill this song has building up to that line. As for the minors on the island versus the miners. Yeah the coal miners should never be forgotten. Especially since In Alabama do union still fighting for minors right within that state. But also people forget that those minors on an island are important because number one most people are actually horrified when children get taken advantage of. And also it shows that when you got money a lot of times you’re above the law. Yeah they got Epstein. But what about his ties to Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and Bill Gates? Looks like they’re still sitting pretty At least when it comes to that particular issue. I get that issue comes down to class too.
"someone from the 'institute for strategic discourse' which sounds like a pretty kush gig!" LOL every time I hear one of these jobs titles I'm always like "damn why didn't I come up with this grift?!"
Both left and right politics can espouse any type of moral standard. The difference between them is that one side commits to less top down social structure, while the other commits to more. It's from the old French parliament. Wouldn't the rest be basically noise?
This was a great video. I've always been fascinated by Peterson's perspective, because his approach to religion really is postmodern, ironic as that is.
I didn't really know much about this song or Oliver Anthony, a lot of the discourse around it seemed a little too Culture-War entrenched for my tastes. But respect to Anthony for not giving into to the culture war and going all out grifting for the side that tried to coopt him. Even if you don't agree with him or with parts of the song, I think he recognizes the two-sided hypocritical nature of both parties and cares about downtrodden people. I'd say he deserves to be taken at face value and not as a right-wing psyop or something.
Your point at 1:30 is trying to sell this song as not right wing is laughable. It's a short song, it's not class conscious for him to rail on food stamps and we get no ECONOMIC critique of the rich men. I'm sure this jesus son of god character would despise Epstien, but he wouldn't waste two lines crying about welfare.
Love this. Thanks. Only thing I was pondering was that judeo-Christian teachings do give us an oppurtunity to plug into something that, whilst I don’t believe it is something shaped by deities, represents a canon of memes/archetypes that have followed us around in some form for god knows (lol) how long. I think Peterson and moreover Jung is trying to bridge that gap - between our deep instincts stories and our biological evolution as a species. I don’t necessarily think you can critique it fairly as something that some king or writer at some point just ‘got right’…. Hope that makes sense
very refreshing to see someone else on the left admit the inherent class issues brought up in the song. too many “leftists” calling it racist and confederate, when we’re supposed to view things from a class perspective.
The problem with the left and the right is that they're both paternalistic. It's their way or the highway because they believe their lifestyle choices are the best for humanity. How about living and let live. Let people find out what they want in life and learn to accept the consequences, that's the only way to live a life of no regrets.
Peterson believes morality is divine/sacred. He places sacred coded language on living a good life, Similar to say hinduism living in accordance to the dharma. This doesnt suddenly mean religion loses its effect or power entirely. Religion buttresses his beliefs on morality and the family. Jordan knows they have utility. People don’t lose their religious way of thinking entirely when they lose their belief in God. It still effects their values and sense of guilt.
That was brilliant. Perhaps at some point you should do a video on how Peterson has bastardized Jung, who complained about many of the things you mention here and tried to revive the idea of Otto's "numinos", which, as you point out, is something mere ideology cannot, and SHOULD not touch.
Turning down an 8 million contract is not such a big deal. Forget the headline figure. There would be lots of strings attached. He's made loads of money already from the song. And good luck to him with that. Because that windfall needs to last him the rest of his life.
I think the mind can be understood at a mechanical level, at least to some extent. After all, marketing is a multi-billion dollar industry for a reason.
Absolutely fantastic video. I will have to seek out Eagleton's work. I want to add that you would never catch Shapiro or Petersen saying anything nice about the the fastest-growing Abrahamic religion, Islam lol this is also Ideology based

I hate how when someone hears “conspiracy” they automatically assume that it’s either a truth or a lie almost instantly. I wish we could separate these ideas from each other and say some people conspire but not all theories are true
Which theories do you think are untrue? Do you truly understand what a theory is, scientifically?
Missed your analysis, thx just found ya
Im soo glad you’re back man! Your takes are always interesting
Thank you so much for this. You're just right.
Jared, this is where youve been?! I’ve missed you man!! Thanks you for wisecrack!
“Storyteller kings that just really nailed it” - great line
Guys, it’s also just a good song. Oliver has a fantastic voice.
What a wonderful piece of content. Thank you for this.
That was very enlightening, thank you
this whole topic aside: would genuinly love to see a conversation between Jared and Peterson in a lengthy podcast on...whatever topic.
Why? Peterson is a bloviating sophist (as is Sam Harris).
@@jacobdriscoll8276
you seem to struggle with/hate style over substance. Thats ok, not all people can stand sophistication above comfort level, its something you actually share with Matt dillahunty and his "new atheist" ilk..who has with his philosophical hobbyism all the intellectual subtlety of a baboon.
Ask him to describe Human Beings on a fundamental level and he will say: “just sacks of meat because that’s what science tells us”
That aside its still, speaking of fallacies and baseless assertions. A pretty blind/baseless assertion with regard to Peterson. The fact that it goes over your head doesn’t mean he doesn’t engage in debate or discussion
I still dont understand how anyone can call joe rogan right wing?
Painting with a broad brush, much?
Damn Jared. This was darn good. If you don’t believe in a single word of the Bible, you have perhaps done it a great service. Love this analysis. Will definitely read the author you mentioned in this video.
Great analysis, if we look deeper the motivation for both the left and right (ideology vs religion) is astonishingly similar!
Man, you’re good! Loved it!
Well, i thought i might be annoyed with this take because i like DW. But this is spot on and extremely thought provoking.

@@RA-ie3ss
“parasitic”
You expose the fact that you’re not interested in a better society.
Most people on welfare aren’t Parasites. In fact they are WORKING poor.
Again 43 years of hearing the falsehood of welfare queens. You just going to have to live with that people don’t buy Reaganism anymore.
So you And your outdated ideology can take a hike..
@@RA-ie3ss You're right, we should get rid of the parasitic billionaire class.
Jared thanks for this video, a nuanced take as always. I do wish you would spend more time addressing the welfare queen matter as while the first verse portrays despair and anger at our economic system the direction of that anger towards welfare recipients is a long standing and harmful practice and deserves more than a passing mention.
"...they will hold to the outward form of our religion, but reject its real power." - 2nd Timothy
Isnt the Oliver guy a landlord? That fudge round line is worse with that context, lol
"horseshoe" theory suggests the extreme left and the extreme right have more in common with each other than either does to the centre.
thank you for this ray of sanity in a wild world
Every religion was always already ideology, and every ideology is always already a religion, feel free to point out a diffrence, these concepts might be refering to the same thing.
"Intoxicated with a mythology of pure reason, [they] set out to purge humanity of its essential mystery, converting the mind itself into a sort of material object as mechanically predictable as the circulation of the blood. It is, in short, a kind of madness of Reason - a hubristic campaign to blueprint our elusive spiritual being, and to do so, moreover, for the purposes of controlling and manipulating it."
Gotta remember this one.
What lies?
Thoughts?
@@billcahill2110 Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Plenty of suffering to alleviate right here, including a lot of Anthony's.

NPR isnt far from becoming a version of the Onion
In exploring the practicalities of religion I think there's a more charitable interpretation than just "benevolent show business". Our world is increasingly non-religious and hitting a non-believer with "because God" isn't convincing, whereas "because of these practical results" can be the first step of a long journey.
bro, you solved half of the internet.
The category of religion being self defeating is an interesting revelation
I was a little surprised seeing someone claiming to be apolitical hanging out with a politician.

Nietzsche "God is dead"
Jordan Peterson "We'll just weekend at Bernie's it"
We got ourselves a Wisecrack Edition!!! Way to go Jared!!
The left did get way more butthurt but that is nothing new.
Amazing video Jared. I am happy that you are playing Bloodborne! My absolute favorite FromSoft game.

Absolutely brilliant video. You nailed explaining this connection.
Return of the King
Your point at 1:30 is trying to sell this song as not right wing is laughable.
It's a short song, it's not class conscious for him to rail on food stamps and we get no ECONOMIC critique of the rich men.
I'm sure this jesus son of god character would despise Epstien, but he wouldn't waste two lines crying about welfare.

Freud, Durkheim, and Eliade
Love this.

"We can not go back to traditionalism."
Afghanistan: Hahahhahahaha... no....
very refreshing to see someone else on the left admit the inherent class issues brought up in the song. too many “leftists” calling it racist and confederate, when we’re supposed to view things from a class perspective.
thank you for giving us this political oasis dude
I haven't watched this. But I must admit this got recommended to me by RUclips. And I remember how you talked about selling your old RUclips channel.
Great analysis, I'm gonna rewatch this and not down the book references 👌
He said it him self it’s about both wings not just the right
That was brilliant.
