    There is another correct answer to #5. It is possible to transfer 1/2 a barrel from a full barrel to an empty barrel. The barrel is cylindrical and symmetrical. If you pour such that when you finish, the barrel is tilted such that the surface of the oil remaining in the previously full barrel touches the top of the joining of the bottom and side of the barrel, and the bottom of the lip at the open top, the oil will occupy exactly half of the barrel and you will have transferred half the oil. When the pour is finished (while the barrel is still tilted), the surface of the oil will define the plane through the cylinder that defines an ellipse with the longest possible axis. After transfer of 1/2 barrel from a full to an empty barrel, the problem is easy.

      And BTW this solution requires less work than that in the video. 👍

      This is also how I got the solution, I was confused why he didn't mention it because he's made a video with a similar solution for seeing when a cylinder is filled halfway.

      I didn't think about this logic when I solve the puzzle, but it is also a possible answer. Each sons will get 7 half barrels, 0 full, and 0 empty, so it's still equal. However, it does require more work for the merchant since they have to pour 7 full barrels into 7 empty barrels to make 14 half barrels, whereas combining 4 half barrels into 2 full barrels is so much easier

    I've worked in IT for over 25 years (as a systems analyst, web developer, and software architect) and have never been asked any sort of logic question during an interview. On a related note, I got a perfect score on the logic section of the GRE so there's that...

    In the oil and barrel questions we do not need complications with oil distribution, because its also the barrels that need to be distributed evenly.
    There are a total if 21 barrels, thus everyone gets 7.
    So, the first two sons get each 3 full+3empty +1 half
    And the third son gets 1full+1 empty+5 halves

    • @ciberiada01
      @ciberiada01 3 года назад +3

      Are you serious? I mean, what kind of father are you?
      You give your first 2 sons the good and full (unopened) barrels, and the 3-rd son gets 5 halves? And you know the oil quality is not the same if a barrel has been opened. 😁😁😁
      I'm kidding of course. 😁 Your solution is valid. My point was: whatever you do (as a parent), there will always be someone not happy with your decision.

    On #4, in reality, just setting your clock to noon at the closest you can approximate noon via shadows would probably be more accurate than assuming you actually walked at a consistent speed and know the travel time precisely.

    • @manusarda
      @manusarda 3 года назад +1

      No it's not easy to approximate noon by seeing shadow.
      Because sun travels from tropic of cancer to capricon, hence it may not pass just over your head.
      You may also need compass for it

    • @ciberiada01

      @@manusarda
      Well, assuming that at noon the sun is at its peak (it drops the shortest shadow), these methods are not really difficult.
      The rest is just a question of finding a water vessel and punching a tiny hole in it. 😁

    • @manusarda
      @manusarda 3 года назад +2

      @@ciberiada01 I didn't understood what are you saying by water vessel and hole.
      Regarding the noon part, you are correct (shortest shadow).
      But at my place, shortest shadow will be ar 1:00 PM because I live in Jaipur (city in India). There is 2 hour difference between eastern and western point, whereas the time zone is set with reference to Kolkata.
      So if you live in India then this method will work only in selected cities (which are on same longitude with kolkata).
      Situation get worse in Russia.

      Ah, Russia! 😁 They are always hard to deal with. (Joke)
      I'm glad to meet someone from India! Greetings! As for the time zones, yes it's true they never follow exactly the ‘astronomic time’. But even if you're in the farthest city, the max. difference will be about 1h, let's say 1h30. Which is preferable, compared to not having time at all.
      ➡ To your question, the vessel and the water were for making a kind of a water clock. If you leave the water to flow from one noon to the next, and you divide this quantity by 24, you will get approximately the duration of 1 hour. (I imagined I'm Robinson Crusoe in a desert island. 😁)

      Yes, you can come up with 178/223 with the one piece of information, but you are stuck with having to make a choice between 177/224 and 179/222 which would be the adjacent pairings to 178. You need the added knowledge that an even number, like 2 always is the back side of 1, a lower number, so in this case 178 is the backside of 177.

      Nope, you don't have measuring apparatus so you won't be able to halve them properly.
      The only measurable transfers are when you empty a barrel, or/and fill a barrel. Of these, any transfer from a full barrel just switches the barrels; any from an empty barrel does nothing. Half into full does nothing; half into empty switches.
      Only half into half changes it: from h+h to e+f. Doing this twice gives 9 full, 9 empty and 3 half-barrels, which can be divided in 3 sets.

The difference between 0.99 and 0.98 is not a matter of 1 kg of water lost which is what many would intuitively guess, but a matter of 50 kg of water lost. 99% weight by water to start is 99/(99+1), but 98% weight by water is 49/(49+1), so you've gone from 99kg down to 49kg. Bizarre twist!

    Better answer for #1: only ONE square fence needs to be added, not two, to be able to isolate 9 horses: the first diagonally placed fence shown at 1:08 in the video, but slightly larger, so that its four corners are outside the original fence, forming four isolation areas outside it. That keeps the same four isolation corners of the original fence, and forms a large center isolation area. Fence construction is not done when horses are loose. As each area is finished being built, put one horse in it.

    #4: Philosopher notes the time on his own clock without winding it. Philosopher notes time he arrives at friends house. Philosopher leaves friends house at the same time as his own clock had read. Philosophers gets home and winds and sets and his clock to what his friends had read when he had arrived.

    • @jarnamhar
      @jarnamhar 3 года назад

      This is incorrect. Let's say, P started from 10 am from his house and reached his friend's home where he finds the time to be 10 30am. P doesn't know how the clock at his home is, slow or fast with this information.
      Now he starts at 10pm from his friend's home. He finds the time at his place to be 10 40pm upon reaching. Do you think it is right to set to 10 30pm in his clock? We still don't know if the clock is slow or fast by doing this. What is right is that, we know the time and distance shall be equal from his place to his friend's, since his pace is contant. If we consider 30 minutes from his place to his friend's and find 40 mins from his friend's place to his, then the total time is 70 mins, dividing by two will give the actual time taken, 35 mins. That means, he has to set the clock to 10 35 at his place. If he finds it 10 20 pm at his place when he reached, then it is 30+20=50/2= 25, that means he has to set 10 25 in his clock. This way, P gets to know if he had a slow or fast clock and also sets the right time. It's pretty much the same method as mentioned here.

      @sorsocksfake Год назад

      Not sure if Jaham's explanation is correct (or unclear) but to check your plan:
      Let's say his clock says 0700 when he leaves. The actual time is 10:30. He arrives at 11:45 (1:15 travel time). he stays for the night and leaves at 0700 (arrives at 08:15), then sets the clock to 11:45. Obviously, incorrect solution.
      You can work with it if you do wind it up and halve the difference upon return - that'd get you 08:15. Returning at the set time is not necessary though: it's just the same principle.
      Probably easiest though is just to wind&set the clock to 00:00, walk over, observe the time (say 14:45) and walk straight back. Say the clock then says 04:28, he'll know his travel time (04:28/2=02:14) and can add it to the observed time.

    For the forth desert puzzle I have *another solution*
    He can see the altitude of sun and begin his journey then when he reaches his friends house he checks the time there eg. 10 at night
    The next day he would start returning at the same altitude of sun so as he would take the same amount of time to return, he could turn the clock at the same time he saw in his friends house eg 10 ,he just have to set it to am rather than pm

    It was asked to share equally. So considering first number as full barrels, second number as half full barrels and third number as empty barrels. First son would get 3, 1, 3. Second son would get 3, 1, 3. Third son would get 1, 5, 1. With this approach, every son would get 3.5 barrels of oil and 7 barrels without the concept of transferring from one barrel to other.

    First we will give 2full ,2half full and 2 empty barrel to each son
    So total 6full 6 half full and 6 empty barrel will be given in total
    Then we have remaining 1full 1half full and 1 empty barrel so
    We will pour half of full barrel to the empty one and we will end up by having 3 half full barrel we will distribute them equally
    So each son will get

  • @applejuicefool69
    @applejuicefool69 3 года назад +1

    In the oil problem, you have a contradiction. You say you have no measuring devices, and you also say you have barrels. Barrels are measuring devices. You go on to assert that you can't pour half the oil from a full barrel to an empty barrel because you have no measuring devices... why couldn't you simply pour until the level of the oil is the same in both barrels?

    • @letao12
      @letao12 3 года назад

      You have to assume "no measuring device" means it's impossible to determine any volume except "full" and "empty". It's just a rule given to you in a logic puzzle. Certainly there are ways to work around it but that's not solving the same puzzle anymore.

    • @applejuicefool69
      @applejuicefool69 3 года назад

I would go to my friends house and look up when sun-rise was to happen the next day and go back home and wait for the sun to rise the next day and then correct the clock to the correct time. BTW I have an IQ of 157 so this is too easy for me, but I can see why you guys are struggling. The last one (the oil barrels) was especially easy and I solved it straight before 5seconds had passed.
