ya the 80's were great , the music not so much overall loaded with fake drum tracks etc. there were a few musical high spots like U2's Joshua Tree and a few others but living in the 80's as a teenager and young man in my twenties I was grateful there was so much great rock released in the late 60's and 70's that got my group thru the wasteland of the 80's til that one night in the early 90's that I saw Nirvana "Smells like teen spirit" on Friday night videos and rock music was born again with that raw earthy sound of Seattle grunge .Sadly rock and rock bands have entered another long wasteland and I just hope there's some kids that have seen some of these video reviews from Bad and Lex that have inspired them to pick up some instruments and head to the garage and get creative !!!!

The song is about the fantasy world a woman enters every time she dreams when facing a difficult situation. It was the first single in which Nancy Wilson sang lead vocals instead of her sister Ann. She had a cold when they recorded the song which gave her that slight raspy sound. It was Heart's first song to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March of 1986. Also, with regard to dreaming you may recall the lyrics talked about how its funny how your feet in dreams never touch the ground. Some say the first step to taking control of your dreams is to first realize that you are in a dream. Then you need to look down and find your feet. It is then that you should be capable of taking control of your dream.

Only time I can usually control a dream is I'm stirred by something and I go back in to the dream and there is just that sliver of consciousness now that lets me shape events, or if not change, at least wonder at how weird events are and how they aren't making literal sense but aware that it seemed to a moment ago. "These Dreams" was the first of two #1 hits for Heart. Lex asked, "Where's Ann?" Well, Ann (black hair) did the backing vocals on this song, giving sister Nancy Wilson (blond hair) an opportunity as the lead vocalist for the first time. Stylistically, this song is very different from Heart's 1970s and early 1980s output, having been written by renowned songwriters Martin Page and Bernie Taupin. Page also wrote or co-wrote hits such as "We Built This City" by Starship, "King Of Wishful Thinking" and "Faithful" by Go West, and even a hit of his own called "In The House Of Stone And Light," which peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1995. Taupin is best known as the primary songwriting partner of Elton John, having co-written most of his hits.
Overall, Heart had 20 Top 40 hits on the Hot 100 from 1976-1994, including nine Top 10 hits, and two #1 hits. Here are their Top 10 hits in chronological order:
    "Magic Man" (#9 in 1976)
"Tell It Like It Is" (#8 in 1981)
"What About Love?" (#10 in 1985)
    "Never" (#4 in 1985)
    "These Dreams" (#1 in 1986)
"Nothin' At All" (#10 in 1986)
    "Alone" (#1 in 1987)
"Who Will You Run To" (#7 in 1987)
"All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" (#2 in 1990)
Some not-Top 10 classics of theirs include, but are not limited to:
"Crazy On You" (#35 in 1976)
    "Barracuda" (#11 in 1977)
    "Heartless" (#24 in 1978)
    "Straight On" (#15 in 1978)
"Even It Up" (#23 in 1980)
    "There's The Girl" (#12 in 1988)
    "I Didn't Want To Need You" (#23 in 1990)
    "Stranded" (#13 in 1990)
I'm not sure which of their songs you've already listened to other than "Magic Man," "Barracuda" and "Alone," but from the two lists above, I'd recommend "Crazy On You," "Heartless," "What About Love?" "Never," "Nothin' At All," "There's The Girl" and "Stranded."
I'd also recommend a duet that Ann Wilson performed with Loverboy lead singer Mike Reno, called "Almost Paradise." It's the love ballad from the movie Footloose, which, in addition to being a blockbuster movie and one of the iconic movies of the 1980s, also has the eighth-best-selling movie soundtrack of all time, being certified 9X Platinum by the RIAA, and featuring six Top 40 hits, including three Top 10 hits and two #1 hits. ("Almost Paradise" was one of the Top 10 hits, peaking at #7 on the Hot 100 in the summer of 1984.)

As a 13 year-old teen when this came out, I was in love with the ladies of Heart. This album was my first exposure to them, and it took decades for me to truly appreciate their older music. Their 3 big mainstream albums: Heart, Bad Animals, Brigade, were huge and bring back a lot of memories. Nancy had a cold while this was recorded, so her voice is a little more raspy than normal. I'd suggesting listening to Stranded to hear the true beauty of her voice.

Good song. Heart often plays an acoustic version in concert.
Written by Martin Page and Bernie Taupin.
RIP Sharon Hess: Nancy Wilson dedicated These Dreams to her friend, a victim of leukemia.
Johnny Colla of The News and Ann Wilson sang backing vocals. Recorded in The Record Plant in Saucelito. That is north of San Francisco. Luckily, Johnny Colla was available. So were Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas: they sang backing vocals in What About Love. Lynn Wilson, the oldest of the sisters, sang backing vocals. She lives in San Francisco, which is the birthplace of Nancy, drummer Denny Carmassi ... and me!
In 1985, EMI forced the Wilson sisters to get outside songwriters for the next album. They were lucky enough to get Martin Page and Bernie Taupin to write this song.
Suggested video: Heart performs There's the Girl.

Interesting note....this song was written by Bernie Taupin who wrote most of Elton John's lyrics. They originally wanted Stevie Nicks to sing this because they felt it was more in line with her style, but she turned it down....probably because Nicks already had a backlog of her own songs that hadn't yet been recorded.

Brad, there is a technique to remember your dreams better. When you wake up, for a few seconds you do remember your dream, and then you forget it. If you keep a pad of paper and a pen by your bedside, and if you get in the habit of immediately writing down your dream the moment you wake up, then you will train your brain to better remember your dreams. Over time it will get easier. A lot of writers do this.
Another trick is if you periodically ask yourself if you're dreaming, even when you know you're not, you can work to make it a habit. Then, once it becomes habitual, you will start asking the question while you are dreaming. Sometimes, if you realize you're dreaming, you can sort of take control of the dream and guide it, instead of just going along for the ride. This is especially useful in nightmares, but it's fun in other dreams.

Dreams are amazing personal intelligence. Those dreams you *want* to remember contains information you want to know. So.. write down the dreams you want to remember. The writing becomes relevant as your path opens up. xo Lex, that's for you too, lovely. xo
