  • Shahbaz Taseer is in conversation with Pervaiz Alam, discussing his book ‘Lost to the World: A Memoir of Faith, Family, and Five Years in Terrorist Captivity’ published by Penguin Random House. He also talks about his family, grand father Mohd Din Taseer, renowned Urdu scholar, and Faiz Ahmad Faiz, legendary Urdu poet whose wife Alys was the sister of MD Taseer’s wife, Christobel.
The story goes back to 2011 when Shahbaz Taseer was kidnapped, tortured and remained in captivity for almost 5 years. Just seven months before his kidnapping Shahbaz’s father, Salman Taseer, governor of Punjab, was assassinated by his own guard in Lahore for speaking out against Pakistan's blasphemy laws in the Asiya Bibi case. The kidnappers of Shahbaz demanded a ransom money of $65 Million dollars from his mother.
Shahbaz as a hostage was moved from one place to the other, Lahore to Waziristan and then to dozens of hide-outs in Afghanistan, where he was brutally tortured and forced to endure extreme cruelty.
In a long interview, Shahbaz Taseer talks about his pain in solitary confinement and yet he is able to look at the most bizarre and comic episodes that unfolded in front of him as his fate hanged in the balance.
This Cineink interview was recorded online in London on 13th July 2023.

why is he talking in English (mainly)? does he not know Urdu ? He says he is proud of urdu - but is talking in English? a little pretentious!

The reason he speaks in English is for solely for the fact the urdu speakers have NOT given the due attention to his story and quite frankly the struggle most of the pakistanis dont respect him and majority even abuse him and his family on basis of religious extremism
