I've also found that Yngwie is a truly-underappreciated rhythm player. I love his use of inverted chords to add an interesting "skew" to a cool riff. Cheers, Rob.
Yep, that's something that people seem to miss. I've found the rhythm playing of Ynqwie and Vai to be the most challenging and sometimes downright impossible to play...
Actually he one of the worst rhythm players at least in comparison to the other shred neo classicals(that most of his bands he had a keyboardist), but no one listens to him for rhythms they listen for his shred mastery. Now Eddie Van Halen N NuNo Bettencourt are 2 cats who all famous for being lead guitarist but overlooked at how great their rhythms playing is.
Wait a minute....you said you wasn't that great at playing Yngwie. I have to disagree with you good sir, because at 8:23, you knocked it out of the park!
Really good one. That's kind of a tongue twister for me since i don't play much outside the pentatonic so it's stretching out my neural pathways. Thanks robert
Robert, the next time you do an Yngwie type lesson, you need to wear one of those silk puffy shirts that the man himself wears often and is so fond of. maybe a gold Rolex and some gold chains. Treat yourself and get your hair done up wavy like Yngwie. I would almost kill to see that. would be very funny.
At 10:00 or so when you are playing and say there’s a melody there from something…. The first 3 notes you played brought me back to around 2002 in junior high music class where I was one of the two electric bass players in the class and our teacher was in front of the class with a tarnished tuba almost bigger than he was leading us through the Jurassic Park theme song ….. once you get to play that to the point where everyone knows their parts and you have the brass woodwind percussion and rhythm Sections all together in person it’s a larger than life kinda feel and it still gives me chills thinking about it because that was the first time I got to experience playing music with a large group of people that were taking the time to practice and we’re serious…. We’re going on 20 years later and I still think about those times Mr. Rothwell was an amazing music teacher and he would take the time after class and give me some pointers on how to play this better or there’s an easier way to do that knowing that My passion was for the guitar but the closest thing the school had to offer was the electric bass and he would show me these little licks to play on the bass that I could transfer over to the guitar and he would explain where the riff would continue on past the 4 strings I had available and then give me a note excusing me for being 20mins. Late
Too bad about that wonky fret! If only you had literal racks of guitars behind you to choose another one from… Just kidding, I know Supreme Court precedent as well as Papal edict require Yngwie stuff to be done on a white Strat on pain of excommunication, execution or worse - demotion to bass player! Thanks for the cool lesson, definitely going to try it out this weekend (might have to use a green Strat…good thing nobody will see it!) #KeepItShreddy
Thanks Robert! I'm no shredder but I had fun with this lesson. It helped me in a different kind of way, too: since I was in standard tuning, I had to do a little transposition (pretty easy: just move down a half-step). What didn't work in standard, though, was Idea #2. For that, I need to work my ears a little more (or just tune down to Eb...what a concept!).
Great video Robert. Comes at a great time as i was thinking of listening to my favorite Malmsteen albums. I really like these "player hack" videos. I love taking stuff from these videos and putting them in my style of playing. Yngwie is definitely one of the greatest. Unique guy and player. Also another hack to Yngwie sound and style is 20 kilos of gold, otherwise it won't work #enditshreddy 😀
Robert you are consistently so positive, knowledgable, passionate and well, a great shredder! That last lick "there's some melody in there" sounded like something from Jesus Christ Superstar. Rock on! #EnditShreddy
Love him or hate him yngwies single string picking patterns are mad good for r+l hand synchronisation. Also as you said you can easily sneak some of his stuff into music by changing the mode 😂 pedal note stuff esp plus it makes sounding out Bach for electric guitar easier!
I love playing pedaltones, although I can't alternate-pick them cleanly enough at a Yngwie-ish speed. And I love soloing over happy pop songs with pedaltones, gives me that Yngwie vibe on an otherwise yucky pop song. Kinda like neutralising that icky, yucky poppish vibe.
Very interesting that you said Yngwie is tuned a half step down. I have always heard for practically my whole life that throughout his career that he has said that he always plays in standard.
Thanks for the finger exercise…. Never thought about it this way being an upside down player. It would be like you playing entirely on the low E string.
Yngwie does seem to use a lot of even note patterns - makes picking and string changes easier. Do you know how many springs he uses on his Tremolo, and how they are arranged?
He uses 3, one in the center and the other two as far out as possible angling inwards towards the claw. His bridge is also floating just a bit, it's not flush with the body.
When you tune that guitar back up to A440 you will probably find that it will pull the neck forward just enough so that fret won't be fretting out any more!
If you want the yngwie licks, check his reh video and download the pdf for this. It's not all right tabbed, but you get the ideas And the reason why he can't play the first lick fast because he did what I did wrong for a long time, a 4 note pattern. You need the signature 6note pattern yngwie uses
Nice lesson btw the ending improve lick think the song ur thinking is that pop song that think it called "your beautiful" which Weird Al later made into "ur pitiful" hahahha that sounds I heard.....makes me wonder if those cats ripped of Yngwie the way justin Beiber ripped of "baby" with Van Halen "dance the night away" harmonies.
I haven't listened to a lot of Yngwie. But from what Ive heard he's obviously a virtuoso. But if I'm going to be honest it sounds like a mix of classical and circus music to me.
"He does what he wants." It's not the right way or the wrong
way. It's the Yngwie. Love the shred lesson, many thanks!
"It ls the Yngwie"
Haha 😅
Robert... my man... how did you make an Yngwie lesson packed with theory seem so easy?? Great job man!!
#keepitshreddy
I love this. I just in the last few months have begun to attempt Yngwie. It has been a long while since you did a Yngwie type lesson. Thanx Robert
Yngwie stuff are popping up like crazy!! Got really excited about this one!!
At 9:55 that was totally “You’re beautiful” by James Blunt. Now that’s a tune to shred on. Haha
Whenever I hear that song, I think of the end theme to the old incredible hulk TV series.
I've also found that Yngwie is a truly-underappreciated rhythm player. I love his use of inverted chords to add an interesting "skew" to a cool riff. Cheers, Rob.
Finally somebody notices

Awesome lesson Robert! Thanks for sharing brother!
Great lesson Robert! Thanks and nice shreddin'! Keep it rockin'!!!
Robert this was really good
Simple patterns to build great pieces on
Thanks man👍👍
Nice Robert! Always appreciate insight into & inspiration from the Viking! I dig the video. Keep them coming man. 👏🎸😎
That was a blast. Thanks for a really interesting and fun lesson!

The melody at the end is the theme song for the TV series The hulk back in the 80s
"Take your Yngwie and make it happy" That made me chuckle!
Thanks Robert for some awesome inspiration, again!
Great Lesson as always!
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Awesome Robert. A lot of good practical stuff in this one. 👍🎸 #KeepItShreddy
great video!!!!!! big fan of your channel
Awesome way to break this down!

I’m going to add this to my practice routine.

Pedal tones are cool in phrygian dominant.
That melody almost sounded like the outro music of the old inedible hulk show from the 70s early 80s ish lol
I came here to say this.
That's the same melody I heard
Literally ran to the comments to see if anyone else caught it
You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry!!😬😂😂

🤣😂
lol
Well, I'm playing a sunburst 1978 Strat. It's not the proper Yngwie color but it's got the big CBS headstock.
Do you have any plans for a demo of the Schecter PT special.
My 16 fret is low on my AZ. Still can get pretty close to 1mm action though.
Love the content bro...

Great stuff! Ynqwie would like this, at least I think he would! Cheers!
You might not virtuoso dude, but u're a humble man.. Auto sub n kick the bell... May ur channel get succes day by day, Gbu.. Thanks for the lesson..

Thank u Robert🇫🇷👍🏼🍒
Please tell us about your sound setup: Guitar model and pedals
I just love the "pedal tone" pattern. Thanks Robert, you did a great lesson,😊 Yngwie is my favorite all time shredder!.👍 Cheers
That melody reminded me of The Incredible Hulk theme at 9:55, especially on the B string. What do you think? Thanks for the lesson, loved it!
Sounds killer
Leave it Shreddy !!! Luv me some Yngwie

#EndItShreddy cool look at Yngwie technique. Always awesome content 🤘🎸
Hi Robert, can you please do a lesson on what and how you did from 08:22 to 08:27
And thnx for this lesson.
Slow down the vid to 50% and it is pretty obvious, I just did.
If it is still too difficult, slow down to 25% to get the right notes.
What do you think of the latest Yngwie album?
There's definitely a bit of Celine Dion and the theme to The Incredible Hulk TV show in there😂
Is that a 7.5" radius?
That melody you can hear is, "it's all coming back to me now", cieline dion
Here’s a thought… if the 16th fret is dying, then change the key?
Thanks for the finger exercise…. Never thought about it this way being an upside down player. It would be like you playing entirely on the low E string.
At 9:41, you played D-G-F#-G and recognized a melody that you couldn't quite remember.
That's Elvis Presley's timeless, quiet ballad, LOVE ME TENDER.
Wow!
I thought it was just the scalloped fretboard. Tried it once, and it was so painful. Never back at it again.
So many times you can figure out the scale by just using your ear and your ear will let you know that sounds right... very Paganini style💯
Yngwie does seem to use a lot of even note patterns - makes picking and string changes easier. Do you know how many springs he uses on his Tremolo, and how they are arranged?

Hmmm, that melody,... Incredible Hulk ending theme music (Lonely man)

If the note you needed for the example was fretting out why didn't you just use another guitar?
Why not grab another one of those guitars?
I haven't listened to a lot of Yngwie. But from what Ive heard he's obviously a virtuoso. But if I'm going to be honest it sounds like a mix of classical and circus music to me.
Think of it as incorporating Bach and Paganini to metal, with a mix of Deep Purple. That is the style of Yngwie Malmsteen.
Don’t you have a guitar with a functional 16th?
