  • #darbarfestival | Jayanthi Kumaresh gives a superb unamplified demonstration of her Saraswati veena, playing the intricate Raga Karnataka Shuddha Saveri.
    Learn more about the music:
Jayanthi Kumaresh’s saraswati veena is an ancient instrument, named after the Hindu goddess of arts and learning. But her gently electrified version produces a strikingly guitaristic tone, igniting Carnatic classical melodies with sweeping bends. She started playing aged three, and learned under her mother Lalgudi Rajalakshmi, before leaving home aged 13 to study with her aunt Padmavathy Ananthagopalan. She also received instruction from her great-uncle, violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman, and noted veenai S Balachander.
A few years later she became one of the youngest artists to receive an All India Radio ‘A’ grading, earned a doctorate in veena history, and founded the Indian National Orchestra, uniting musicians from India’s classical traditions in a large ensemble. On recent recordings she has experimented with recording seven layers of veena on top of each other, and continues to write for dance and film. Listen to Jayanthi here:

Well for one thing, being from Europe means nothing. Familiarize yourself with the music of the Renaissance and that is just for starters. You have to be brain dead to think "Indian" music has anything over that. Then go on to Chopin, Dvorjak, Orff, and so on. Don't get me wrong; I love the veena but don't sell Europe short.

The atmosphere totally adds to the beauty of the ragam Karnataka shuddha saveri.
The stone elephant, the beautiful veenai, played by a beautiful Lady ;Jayanthi kumaresh, the call of the Indian koyal bird , all make the performance mesmerizing.
there's a subtle sadness and devotion evoked by the ragam and if played so skillfully ,as is played by Jayanthi ma'am , wins the heart of the listener!

I've yet to find any recordings of Kumaresh (or of the Sarawati Veena in general) that match the quality of this channel's.... which is a pity because the tracks on this channel are so short. I would love to hear a full performance of the instrument which records its sound as well as this. I find that a lot of recordings on here and in general of Indian instruments can be a little too "tinny and twangy" for my liking. But DarbarFestival has done an excellent job of capturing the fullness and subtlety of both the instruments and the artists' use of them.
I would welcome links to performances that match these in quality!
