  • A wall of forts and palisades once surrounded New Orleans, but what happened to them? Well, there may yet be a trace of them left in the French Quarter!

    Now that is interesting. All over the world roads and land boundaries are often the last remnants of prior settlement, probably because they're a lot of work to change.

    Heart of the Night by Poco is the first thing I think of when it comes to New Orleans, second is the computer game Gabriel Knight. Funny, they both have night or knight in them. Now thirdly, I’ll think of its wall.

    Great video! 👍
    New Orleans couldn't be more different than where I'm from in many ways. Practically no elevation there, you're right on the river, whereas here in Colorado, we're much higher up. I would love to visit New Orleans someday (after all, it's the birthplace of my beloved jazz). It'd be like a whole new experience from what I'm used to.

    So fascinating and very important to document this type stuff. Some experts suspect New Orleans will be underwater sooner than later. It's important to document the history of it before that happens. Future explorers will explore the modern city under water without knowing there was a whole history that was there before the current buildings.

    I believe the Hotel de la Monnaie was built around the time of the 1984 World's Fair. I looked at the history aerials website but can’t tell if there was a building where the parking lot is.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian  Месяц назад

      If there was, then the last time there would have been buildings there was before the 1900s. I couldn't find any photographs of that area that pre-dated the 1920s.

    Alex will you ever go back to Disneyland? I am a big fan of Walt and Disneyland. Your videos on these subjects are some of, if not THE very best I've ever seen. Even better than many of the “official “ videos of the subjects.
    Your video on the Architecture of Disneyland is my favorite Disneyland video ever.
    It would be interesting to see what you would make of the place now days.

    Isn't the French quarter we see today built by the Spanish

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian  Месяц назад +1

      Yes, and I made sure to mention that in the video: "The fires of 1788 and 1794 largely wiped out the French Colonial architecture... ...the Spanish rebuilt the city with better fireproofing, regulating construction to masonry and stucco, with roofs made of slate."
