- Italian governments have always tried to have their way with public broadcaster RAI. But since she came to power two years ago, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been accused of turning Rai into a “mouthpiece”.
Tariq Nafi reports from Rome, on the faltering independence of Italy’s national broadcaster and the broader implications for democratic discourse and media freedom in Italy.

RAI has always been politicized and, in my opinion, it no longer has any reason to exist. I hope that new generations will increasingly look for independent sources of information. Unfortunately, knowledge of English and critical thinking skills are required. Two fields in which the Italian school, coincidentally, has never excelled.

Granted some of the younger generation who identify themselves as leftists are pushing for censorship and have wanted to cancel people who’s views don’t align with theirs, as we’ve seen a lot of this over gender issues for example, but to be fair we’re seeing this come from the right too, especially as regards to discussing the situation in Gaza. We also have had the right calling for banning protests against the genocide in Gaza too. What I do know is this, the working class being divided totally plays into the hands of the establishment and the elites. Sadly, so many people are falling for the divide and conquer manipulation tactics, but it’s not surprising as it’s worked for decades.

Never a proposal, only going against regardless, and pressuring the government on laws that they have not made, seeing fascists everywhere, censorship, Saviano talking about 'Melonian Youth', as if there were little Balillas running around armed in the streets. The truth is that they toppled the Draghi government, which I liked, just for mere, sleazy electoral purposes, without thinking about this ruined country, but they were wrong. But what they can't stand is the fact that the Meloni government is doing well, both in the economy and on labour, domestic and international, and they want to demolish it at any cost, come what may. But I get tired of going to elections every year. Sorry for the outburst.

I am surprised how AJ could publish such a biased report, based solely on sources clearly linked to the current Italian opposition. Let's talk about the facts. Since 1986, after the centrist governments of the Christian Democrats, the left has come to power, bolstered by new members from the former Italian Communist Party.
From 1986 to today, in 38 years, the left has governed for 29 years, while the right, including the Berlusconi governments of the early 2000s and the current government of Giorgia Meloni, has governed for less than 9 years in total. During these 38 years, the left has had complete control over RAI, appointing and promoting only journalists and managers connected to left-wing parties to the top positions in the public broadcasting company. For three decades, the left has manipulated public information in its favor, distorting the facts to the detriment of the right, whether moderate or conservative.
In the last legislature, when Meloni was in opposition, the left ensured that no member of the only right-wing opposition party was included in the RAI oversight bodies, violating regulations and constitutional laws, an unprecedented event in the history of the Italian Republic.
Today, with Giorgia Meloni in government, hundreds of RAI employees hired in the last 30 years and closely tied to the political affairs of the left are raising alarms about a supposed and imaginary right-wing shift in the public information body. However, the facts are clear: the government is simply reforming RAI, seeking to depoliticize it after over 30 years of clear political manipulation by the left.

Yes it is true but never so exaggeratedly like this Gov. is doing now. Never a Pm went on Tv even on Rai and spoke interruptly with no contradictory questions, debate or the editors being so controlled. This is very dangerous, it is a subtle form of dictatorship, we even overcame censorship, it is a serious issue in a country which should be “democratic”. Also, not to mention the fact that Meloni has often sued or publicly denigrated intellectuals or people who are of the opposite ideology.

it has never been any different in italy, when the left ruled, they didn't do it any differently. But Rai only accounts for 30% in Italy, 70% of TV stations are in private hands, so it's not all that extreme. They already said this in 1994 with Berlusconi, but at some point nobody believes it anymore, unfortunately the journalists in Italy (from the left and right) are not neutral and a good journalist should first be independent and not follow a certain party. These journalists who remain anonymous are no better than those of the government, because they are not neutral but are only the press spokespersons of the left-wing parties.

@Francescolozupone. It is not true what you are saying. Your analysis is complete wrong and very biased as well. Currently on Rai, what you are saying, it is not the case anymore. The latest case it is the one of journalist Serena Bartone kicked off. Also when she goes on the public Tv-she goes only there, or have interviews with journalists who are not going to ask uncomfortable questions- there is not debate or nothing, she just speaks alone with no contradictory questions, or better she avoids debates or contradictory questions.
Berlusconi in his times was much more powerful in the media than Meloni now, and still Italian democracy held: every national, regional or municipal election was won or lost, sometimes by narrow margins, with some alternation between his coalition and the opposing one. His party was defeated several times. Now that, almost 20 years later, the internet is more influential than TV, the advantage Meloni can count on is very relative...
