I used to own a 300E 12v 4-Matic. And what a car it was. It *did* consume a bit of gas, but it more than made up for it with excellent comfort, driveability and good power when it counted. Mine was a fully kitted out 1987 model, with electric everything. It had the following accessories (which was bonkers for an 80's car): Electric windows, all dors Electric seat adjustment, front. This included the head-rests. Electric sunroof. Two-tone horn, with a selector switch. Level adjustment for the headlights. Heated seats Two-way climate control, with AC. Central locking with a remote. A few of these accessories are still optional today, but many has since become standard on today's cars. It really showed how premium Mercedes was back in the 80's.
time comes from specs i believe. you could see on 300e it skidded a bit before gripping, for instance, not properly representative. I think the video is meant to display the profile of the acceleration, not so much the proper 0-100

Gasoline: 2.0, 2.3, 2.6!!, 2.8!!!, 3.2, 3.6, 4.2, 5.0, 6.0?!?!. Today one 2.0 tsi 280 ps in the passat (excellent EU version) outrun them all. I can imagine how many costs the whole offer generated. Pure nonsense.
There were no as many regulation as today standards, also innovation and power was what made the diference betwen brands and models, even more on luxury cars, where exotic engines and performance made you "more important" or "better" than everyone else, no matter at what cost. Now every manufacturer wants to sell their cars in the simplest way, looking for the minimun requirements on safety and performance. I think innovation is the key on what cars were and what cars are right now.

I wouldve used a calender as a speedometer. Way more accurate for that diesels.

I had a few- my mechanic always said it was the last of the 'real' Mercs. After this the accountants overruled the engineers

my friend has a 250d, completely beaten up, painfully slow but my god those car are really, really durable. 430K km and still running
