If you noticed, a LOT of his parodies have HUGE disses in them. Yet he's like the nicest guy in the music industry lol
And yet, many, MANY iconic artists, like Lady Gaga, Madonna and Kurt Cobain, have said that they consider having their music openly mocked by Weird Al to be an honour.
@@terrylong8894 It's good that some of the more iconic musicians of recent years have enough of a sense of humor to laugh at themselves.
Exactly! He's the nicest guy in real life because he puts all his passive aggressive anger into his parodies. Lol
Yea but half the music industry is just hoping he will tear them a new one with a parody it’s almost like Self deprecating musical honors.
@@terrylong8894 Michael Jackson, too. He had multiple songs spoofed by Weird Al and loved it.
I love that he's so uncharacteristically vicious on this one, it's so perfect.
Bad grammar can really make you cranky.
Language integrity is important.
You can see he's pissed off about that.
Word.
@Gripen Drakon Weird Al's. ;)
As a grammar snob myself, I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it! But ya really have to admire how he is able to rhyme so many very, very big words. Not an easy task!
He's a cunning linguist!
Don't forget: he also keeps the syllable count in the same amount of time already set by the original song. That must make it far more difficult. So rhyming, using words to follow a theme, making those rhyme, following the syllable count and making THAT rhyme, and bringing the song in under the original time of the song being parodied, Al has to do all of that, and does so every time.
In summation: Weird Al is absolutely someone worthy of being a role model due to his astounding command of the English language that he uses to make parody songs.
Same lol.
@@lordgenerias That is why Weird Al is seen as an absolute comedic genius as he always knows to keep the parodies in the same rhythm as the original. I personally love this one best as he uses so many big words with no problem. The only one that can do better is Eric Idle with his 'Galaxy Song'. I mean the big words are amazing, but putting BIG numbers in a song and make it sound good is just mind blowing.
Did the split infinitive ruin the song for you?
I wish Weird Al would remake the Schoolhouse Rock videos for today's kids
I'd check out a remake lol
“I can tell you right now, I like this version better than the original.” Yes.
Just about any pop song from the last 20 years that he has parodied, when I have the misfortune to hear the original my automatic response is “Weird Al did it better.”
I think Weird Al can be best described as a "wordsmith"
And he would love that.
Yes, which is why bad english pisses him off.
*K E Y B A R D*
He's a wordsmith while I'm a cunning=linguist
Weird Al has a large dictionary
Word Crimes is Al's most genius song. Directly talks about the internet's grammar faults and literally teaching us how to use them properly.
I've said it a million times since I first heard this song (not Literally) that, as the son of a High School English teacher, this song needs to be MANDATORY for all school English Classes! (If only to subliminally reinforce some lessons that would otherwise, likely fall out of the students brain.)
It is both entertaining and Educational. (I love it!)
Elementary school teachers used it in my area after it came out.
I'm studying to become an elementary school teacher and I plan on using this song in my class at some point.
His reference to diagramming was triggering, and now I have years of therapy ahead to cope with the repressed emotions. 😅
You should try "The Saga Begins". You get A song AND a movie parody at the same time.
Some people are surprised by how verbose Al is, but he is very bright. Somewhere, in a parallel universe, he's a successful architect.
or a marine biologist
Al was the valedictorian of his high school class, and he’d skipped a grade or two. He was 16 when he graduated from high school. P.S. I prefer this version of reality, where I get to enjoy his parody songs! 😁 “Word Crimes” and “White and Nerdy” are my two current obsessions! 💗
@susangrande8142 oh, I agree! I suggest you dig deep into his catalog, he has some amazing stuff.
I love that you caught the "cunning linguist" line. That's my favorite and most people don't seem to notice it.
So good. Hardware Store has super bars. One More Minute is great for a 60s parody ballad. Dare to Be Stupid is also awesome.
Hardware store is 🔥
@@WhatKatieSaid I will keep saying, gotta cover Hardware Store - with Lyric video. Raps as fas as Eminem at the end.
I'm looking forward to him getting in to Al's originals. "Since you've been gone" is a favorite of mine.
Oh yeah, One More Minute is an awesome break up song! Y'all should see that one done in concert! 😆
"Dare to be Stupid" is his absolutely best style parody. It's an original song and video done in the style of DEVO.
Hardware store and Craigslist are 2 original songs of his and are amazing for 2 very different reasons..
Been waiting for this one. Intellectual as you are, I knew you'd love it.
Im from Baltimore and have been living in Belgium for the past 3 years. A few coworkers asked me to help them with their English and I told them to study this song to start off.
So glad you finally reacted to this! Al's mastery is on full display here and the video creator, given credit at the end, did a fabulous job. And yes, you are among thousands, if not millions, who prefer this version to the original. Because the music is killer!
What I like about your content is that you come off like a really chill, unstuffy intellectual with sense of humor and an open mind. Thats why I subscribe. Good job.
"Irony is not coincidence"
BARS
..XDDDD real talk though, Carlin put me onto that and I've been on it ever since
I miss George Carlin. He was an abrasive comic genius in my opinion, and I really liked his work.
Had the pleasure of seeing him perform when on tour for this Album. He really is as amazing live as he is in the videos. Honestly, better. He's a class act!
"Proofread that shit." As a proofreader, I concur.
Prince was the only artist that NEVER gave Al permission to parody their music.
He never needed the legal permission to do so (read up on the legal doctrine of fair use, and how it covers parody, if you want to know the *why* of it), but he always asked permission as a professional courtesy after getting burned in his early career. Al decided early on that it was in his interest to build bridges with other artists.
I've been looking forward to you getting to this one! Your fans knew you would love it.
"He who is tired of Weird Al is tired of life." ―Homer Simpson
This was a song after my own heart. I love words and language, especially the English language. And, the instant message and text message eras have been just painful.
I knew you would love this one lol One of Al's finest!
This song contains the one lyric Al is regretful about using
The line "You write like a spastic" got him in very hot water in the UK because spastic (and any variation) is a quite nasty slur against mentally disabled people there.
He immediately publicly apologized and usually stops preforming the song before it gets to that line live now.
The absolute GOAT
It has the same root meaning in North American English but it has broadly faded out of use as a slur against the mentally disabled on this side of the pond over the last few generations so most people just think of it as a relatively obscure insult. I've mostly heard it used on playgrounds when I was a kid (back in the late 20th century) in Canada and in older and less PC British TV shows and movies (sounds like an insult that might get tossed around on something like The Young Ones or Bottom). The diminutive version (spaz) kind of replaced spastic during the late 20th century, morphed into a generalized insult, and then just became a very dated sounding insult over here.
He could've replaced that line with "'cause your writing's erratic", I think it'd fit!
He didn't stop it when I saw him on the mandatory fun tour. Maybe he doesn't do it in the UK.
"Spastic" as a medical term refers specifically to physical/motor disabilities (specifically excessive or uncontrollable muscle tightness, especially in disabilities like cerebral palsy), so I'm a little confused how it ended up as a slur against the *mentally* disabled. It's interesting to hear that it's a big deal over there; in North America it's basically the same as "lame" (the literal meaning of which also refers to physical disabilities, specifically the inability to walk): it may have been an ableist slur centuries ago but by this point it's just a genericized minor insult with no bigoted connotations.
Although funnily enough now that I think about it, I think the "incredibly minor insult" version of spastic in North America does have some connection to the original medical term: it still refers to someone who is excessively tense or gets bent out of shape over something, just figuratively speaking instead of literally (and it's usually used more as a low-key affectionate insult than anything genuinely derogatory). Still baffling to me that it apparently jumped meanings entirely to mean "mentally disabled" elsewhere.
@@LordOFThisWorld19 he still does it in the US, but in the UK he doesn’t sing that verse/line, don’t remember which
I grew up on Weird Al. This song is one of my favorites.
If you wanna be brave and listen to one of his originals, listen to Everything You Know Is Wrong and The Night Santa Went Crazy.
He can match the best and parody the words so good. Loved him since the 90s as a 10 year old
One of his best for his accurate dismay at the state of English usage. Please do Hardware Store next for Weird Al at his rapping best.
I did not know that Weird Al continued to make songs, until I stumbled across your channel. This song is going to be added to my old “School House Rock” for kid’s education. Thank you.
This song made me pay much more attention to when I (or especially when others) use "less" or "fewer."
This is my favorite song by Weird Al. I've never heard Blurred Lines.🤣
LOVE Weird Al...and I think this one's my favorite because the lyrics seem to flow from him so easily, yet it takes a few listens to catch everything he's saying. He's brilliant!
Knowledge is key and some people are just locked out.
The comment you made about English signage reminded me of a giggle I had. Living in non-English country. When visiting a local zoo, spotted a sign at the top of a hill beside some steps that read, "Take care to fall carefully".
The video is incredible with its richness of imbedded details. The "accordion" definition in the flipping pages has Al's picture in it, Mrs. Krabapple is Bart Simpson's teacher, etc. It almost requires a frame-by-frame to catch it all.
You forgot Amish Paradise
As someone that has followed Weird Al since the 80s, this is in my top 5 songs of his. Glad you got to experience it.
I literally can't get out of bed, because my bed is figurative, meaning that it only exists as a literary device. I don't have a bed. I sleep on the floor. There is no bed from which I can get out. All of this is an allegory for something that shall remain open to interpretation. All ambiguity aside, Al's art always amuses.
Your reactions to hearing Weird Al only reminds me how much I thoroughly enjoy Weird Al.
I just recently found your channel and I have to say man I am impressed. I love the varied content, keep it up!
Lol....."Homeroom, Ms. Crabapple". Loved how the beginning of this song brought back a memory. My favorite reaction of Weird Al Yankovic videos from you.
I knew you would like this!! Subscribed!
The part with the silver/mylar/foil balloons about Al's dictionary is a reference to the "Blurred Lines" unrated video.
Never realized how much the music of “Blurred Lines” does, indeed, sound like a song from _Sesame Street._ 😃
I loved his comment about the misuse of the word literally! That was a pet peeve of mine for years.
I remember once seeing a comment on Facebook saying someone was literally drowning in evidence against them and I answered back that the only way they could literally be drowning in evidence is if it was a liquid and it was filling their lungs. Someone got smart with me, (a term I use loosely here,) and informed me it was called a “figure of speech”. This was my response-
“Oy vey! 🤦🏻♂️ You can’t use the word “literally” in a figure of speech! That is “literally” what the word “literally” means!”
He got it after that but c’mon man!
I used to teach English in Korea and it drove me crazy that the franchise running the first two schools where I taught did NOT run their books past the hundreds of native English speakers that taught at their schools. We could have caught so many errors and it wouldn't have cost them a nickel. We'd have done it cheerfully on our own time.
Weird Al is a self-professed grammar nerd. It’s amazing it took this long for him to base a song on it.
Loving the Weird Al and ERB reactions. Keep 'em coming!!
He did put it in the "Recycle Bin". The E-mail ended up messing up the recycle bin, so he put it and the E-mail into the "Biohazard Bin".
“Another one rides the bus” is another Weird Al classic you should check out.
Prince was the only artist to turn Weird Al down on multiple occasions for parodies. No surprise that he wants to stick it to him on something.
Weird Al's Groundhog stomping day, particularly the robot chicken version is pretty hilarious.
My worst personal embarrassment is when they’re/their or cases/case’s errors sneak into my comments and I don’t even notice it even though I know better.
Also, dude, love your voice. Cheers!
This is my favorite Weird Al song!!! He took an awful song and fixed it!
saw this thumbnail and clicked so fast... I knew you'd love it, lol
i absolutely love Weird Al. To write this, while making it be educational and funny and witty, is truly amazing. Al is a very, very smart man.
Ooooh....I remember diagramming in junior high. I loved it.
As a graphic designer, I was quite good at reading wrong faced text. Not so much anymore, but his video in the inset is helping me remember how.
I've been a weird al fan since 2nd grade when I bought my first tape. It's so fun watching you discover this dude, he's such a genuinely great guy and a talented musician
This is probably Al's greatest creation for it's shear creativity.
Weird Al is hilarious! "Living With a Hernia" is one of my favorites.
TWO, lmao just commented on Tacky hopign for this, damn you just made my day.
Edit: Man I picked the right song to misspell a word..
"What was holding you?"
Temporary paralysis.
TIL Weird Al made another awesome parody! - I must have been busy working when it was first published!
I, figuratively, could not finish this song! Kidding! I do love this song parody though. One of his best! But, then again, I was a nerd and English was my major!
Weird Al is a comic genius his word play is second to none as you saw in that video
I've been waiting for this one since you first reacted to Weird Al.
Have you become a Weird Al fan? You've been covering Al for a lot currently. Good for you/us. Thanks.
Tom Leher is Weird Al from the 50's and 60's, i bet you will love his music just as much as this
About what you said with asking English people (or everybody else with who English is their first language) if something is spelled correctly. There was this band from my native country of The Netherlands named "Golden Earring" who got an unfair advantage over contemporary bands after lead singer Barry Hay joined.
Because Barry Hay is from English/Indian decent and English is his first language, so he would go over the lyrics that the other band members were writing and point out grammatical errors, suggest changes in sentence construction and made it that thanks to that the band was one of the very few Dutch acts to be taken seriously in the USA.
Some of those signs in weird English are amusing.
I like the crazy signs you see over some Korean or Vietnamese owned businesses that say things like "A1 Super Hotdog USA number 1 Happy Life Dry Cleaners"
One of my very favorite songs--by anyone! Also "Tacky." Weird Al is an absolute treasure!
Weird Al is an awsome entertainer,,, and uses music to poke fun but also talk about real things👍 he made his own genra😂😂😂👍
This is the first time I've heard this one. I'm a grammar cop! I LOVE IT!
Word Crimes by Weird Al is one of my FAVOURITE songs. Love it!
The most devastating insults don't involve slurs or bad words.
I like the fact in the section showing his PC desktop (I read your email) that Mine sweeper is shown, a subtle nod perhaps to white and nerdy. As for other reactions hardware store where you can hear him demonstrating in rapping chops. Handy and Party in the CIA are another ear worms worthy of listening too, He also did a few parody interviews one of hte funniest is the Weird Al" Yankovic - The Eminem Interview some believe payback for not being allowed to do a video clip to the song parody he did to an Eminem song
That shot at Prince makes me laugh every single time I hear it!!
one of the funniest things about this video is that it is about using proper grammar and then he ends it with a split infinitive. a split infinitive is when he puts a word in between the word to and a verb like drool. the reason this is funny is because in the original angolish that english derives from this is ok. However in scholarly english that is derived from latin it is not. english majors argue this point all the time.
The one time I LITERALLY could not get out of bed was after having open heart surgery. The combination of anesthetics and fatigue after the surgery left me unable to even sit up.
I love this song, and I love your reaction to it.
"I could care less"
That's definitely a word crime.
It's supposed to be "I could care *fewer".😁*
I have to say that you are one of my favorite Reactors. I adore how you break every song down.
The only time I LITERALLY can't get out of bed is when my back pain is too much.
A lot of the shorthand for words we use today like TTYL for talk to you later or PPL for people come from the era of beepers and early era of SMS. Limited space for your messages and they cost more back then
The HR teacher being Mrs. Krabappel is for Bart's teacher on the Simpsons, who was retired after Marcia Wallace, the voice actress who portrayed her, passed away a few years ago. Al has appeared on The Simpsons at least 3 times.
I knew you would love this one! I'm so glad you reacted to it
Weird Al dropped a bar like, “Are words not Letters?” And I almost lost it at the thought, of Weird Al trying to comprehend Nordic words and their nonsensical spellings-vs-Pronunciations. 😂
I sometimes literally can't get out of bed, especially when I throw my back out.
Mom was an English teacher for around 35 years, and I really got from her growing up. My grammar still isn't perfect, nor is my spelling, but you better believe I make sure I'm pronouncing things correctly and using the correct they're/their/there, et all. I also have a bad habit of correcting people's pronunciation, as a knee-jerk reaction to my mom having done it to me my whole life. I made sure mom saw this video, Weird Al was a favorite of my father and he had passed away some years before this album came out. Mom loved it, and I suspect ,if she had still been teaching at the time, she might have gotten permission to use it as an educational tool in her classes to get the kids into it.
I remember a 1960s news magazine that featured an article, with photos, about an alternate spelling class. I believe it was titled, "The wa it's solupozed to be." It was phonetic based and very short lived. It is interesting that language can be susceptible to fad influence.
I currently live in Spain, too. Kinda stalkishly wanna know where @MrLboyd Reacts lives.
Note: I've now listened to 4 reaction videos to this song, today.
I think the "live in a sewer" is poking fun at the Turtle Ninjas. (Yes, I used an alternate label for them.)
This is an incredibly underrated and unnoticed song. I think it's right up your alley. Enjoy.
I think you would absolutely love Hardware Store by Weird Al Yankovic
@5:33 - The translation of some signs leads to hilarity. The best I saw was in a Japanese hotel, "You are invited to take advantage of the chambermaid".
My experience with translations has been movie subtitles; usually, they'll use the sentence structure of the original language, but, the words will be in English, so it reads funny to an English speaker.
I still think that would you love the live version of "Another One Rides The Bus"
Alot of the word crimes especially from shortening of word originate from back when we had character limits. And even before then when people would write in shorthand
I literally just called out someone on Facebook the other day for saying “I Could Care Less” instead of “I couldn’t care less” 🤦🏼♀️
So I said,”Well I guess that means you must care a little!
First, THANK YOU for saying his last name properly!! Second, thanks for doing this one. As a writer, it's one of my favorite songs.
you're a real bright guy and every video you do I enjoy and for that I give you a subscribe
