rudolf buta this game was so ugly and beautiful at the same time. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Every heavily contested miss and block just made the next basket feel so much more impactful. The game was so gritty dude. The desperation was seriously palpable.
This game is insane. Everything is thrown out of the window because every shot is so difficult and tightly guarded. I don't think I've ever seen a game like that since. The intensity is just so high from the tip-off. Incredible memory.
It's interesting, because I kinda have this same exact feeling. I always come back to this game to remind myself how much tough a defense can be in the Finals. I'm with you, ever since this game there has not been such physical play in any other game, in any playoff series.
2010, 13 and 16 finals game 7s were all crazy tight games but in this one especially the shots just would not fall
i mean the defense was tight but its not good basketball. its just bad shot after bad shot. and its not like the celtics were putting in insane effort, cuz in the first half alone the lakers had 15 offensive rebounds, and 23 for the game. the celtics got 8 offensive rebounds for the game. you cant 1 third of the opponent's offensive rebounds and say that the celtics were playing with crazy intensity. none of the teams moved the ball that much. it was very iso heavy, not a lot of ball movement and then shoot a shot contested by 2 or 3 people
It was like an all out heavyweight fight. Every possession was a battle. Great game that went down to the wire on who was going to have the will to outlast the other

Pau was like Euro Duncan at his peak. Lethal in the post whether scoring, passing or locking guys down defensively with his length and strength. 1st ballot hands down.

For me, when I was watching this series, I felt like it was in Gasol's hands. Kobe is Kobe but he can't do it all himself. Gasol was without a doubt the second most skilled on the team offensively. Then Lamar, then Bynum.
Artest > Bynum. Artest was MVP level in Indiana and fucking amazing in Houston. 1. Kobe 2. Pau 3. Artest 4. Odom (although Odom was more talented than Ron)
It's the team that won the championship. One super star cannot do everything. You need a second elite player in Gasol and a glue like Lamar Odom and Bynum for the boards and size. The bench is for depth and the intangibles. Ron Artest was a great pick-up after Ariza left and the defensive intangibles and shutdown defense remained with the team. This is why I love the 2009 and 2010 Lakers teams. Depth with homegrown talent and key free agent signings and trades did the job.
Pau was so much stronger this time around compared to '08. It's sad to me that the Lakers naver gave Pau the respect he deserved, always putting him in trade talk discussions.

What a legend. I am from Alaska and am a Bulls fan. I've seen many games at the United Center. Anyways, my point is, I am an even bigger fan of basketball. I had to hold my tears watching Pau get his jersey in the rafters. This is a simple yet great tribute for us to refresh our minds of why Pau was great.

Watching this again this morning hit different, seeing the way Pau totally gave up his body in this game. Especially after he came off so soft in '08. He got his ass kicked battling in the paint with Wallace and KG. But he stood tall and came through in one of the most physically brutal games I have ever watched in an NBA Final that didn't involve Detroit.
But this morning, seeing the link between these guys on this team, I regret we couldn't keep that core together. Kobe, Pau, Odom and Fisher. Now, seeing that this week, Pau and his wife named their new daughter Elisabet Gianna, the obvious brotherhood he shared with Kobe, it just makes me so emotional.

Man it's crazy how much the game has changed in the last 11 years. You could NOT clog the paint like that today or they'd rain 3s on you like Persian arrows on King Leonidas lol. I legit forgot you would sometimes actually see a whole team in or around the paint lol.
