From my experience I will use both alphabets and numbers. Since two of them have different functionality . To understand chords structure and functions we can use the alphabet, but to train myself to play all 12 keys , I would use numbers , that is why we call chord progression as 1645 , 4536251 etc. I rarely use do re mi etc in learning and explaining improvisation, but it also has its place to use.
