shaun being so stuck in his routine he doesn't notice all the signs of the undead is one of the best parts of this film. Ed just rolling with it is hilarious.
George Romero (The Grandpa of Zombie flicks) liked this movie so much that he invited Simon and Edgar to be zombie extras for a day in Land of the Dead...and Romero pretty much hated most zombie flicks because he thought they weren't original enough.
True! Romero pretty much created the horror film zombie with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, and that film was also one of the first to have a black man as a main role
I bet the people making Shaun of the Dead were chuffed with that since that was one of the main things that they wanted was George Romero's seal of approval.
One of the jokes younger viewers miss is when Ed yells “we’re coming to get you Barbara!” When Shaun is on the phone to his mother. That line is a take on a line from the famous zombie film Night of the Living Dead.
Funny you mention that because George A Romero actually watched Shaun of the Dead and absolutely loved it so much he offered Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg a cameo role as zombies in Land of the Dead
I just realised you can see the movie as an allegory for life. Shaun's life was already falling apart like a zombie apocalypse, and throughout the story (his life), his parents pass away, he loses touch with acquaintances that try to help him be better (his roommate becomes a zombie), and eventually has to let go of his friend that was holding him back (Ed) in order to finally come into his own
My favourite thing is Martin Freeman's roles getting progressively bigger as this trilogy goes on as he was getting more famous 🤣 he's like an extra in this one but has been mates with Simon Pegg (Shaun) for ages 🤣. To be fair most people in these movies are pretty well known in the UK, especially now. I think they made a point to try and get as many people back for the 3rd one who'd been in the first 2 as possible 🤣
He wasn't really getting any more famous in the UK to be fair, his big break fame wise was the Office which had gone through 3 series and finished by the time Shawn of the Dead came out, and he had done little else of note before Hot Fuzz came out. His next jump in fame did come between the 2nd and 3rd film though.
14:45-14:50 "Child Locks" are usually a switch that has to be moved while the door is already open. In the lock position, the handle inside the door cannot open the door. The purpose being to assure a child in the back seat cannot open the door, instead someone has to open the door from the outside (presumably a parent or other adult who was in the front of the car before parking. So to unlock the Child Locks, someone would have to get out of the car, open the door, and move the switching lever.
this movie needs so many rewatches to pick everything, like how the first morning that Shawn goes to the store is repeated almost exactly the same way the second morning but with zombies and in it. another great Edgar Wright movie is "Baby Driver"
I think the reason the Cornetto Triology is so good is that, while each of the films is a parody of a genre, it is also a fantastic contribution to that genre in its own right. Shaun of the Dead clearly parodies many aspects of zombie movies, but at the same time is actually a genuinely great zombie. Hot Fuzz is easily my favourite movie ever.
edgar wright is one of my FAVORITE directors and this movie is my fav from him. it makes me so happy that you notice all of his detailed editing and transitions :')
It actually confused me for a second... they didn't eat food there in any previous scene either, I'd have probably not noticed if she'd just said bar but it's a pub 100%
I saw it in the theaters when it came out, and loved it instantly. It made me want to watch everything else the same team had done, which, at the time, was only Spaced. Which was only out on DVD in the UK. So I ordered Region 2 DVDs and a region free DVD player. Then learned the Episode 2 was their inspiration for SotD.
This movie is a part of the Three Flavors Trilogy which involves Nick Frost and Simon Pegg playing different characters in different movies like Hot Fuzz and The World's End.
"Mugged by who?" "I don't know, some crackheads or something. One of them bit me!" "Why did they bite you?" "I DON'T KNOW, I DIDN'T STOP TO ASK THEM!!!"
Simon Pegg is a PHENOMENAL actor. That scene in the bar where he's miserable, he literally looks like those crying cat memes. He looks like if a new Inside Out character came out and it was just pure misery. And later on when he's in the stand-off? Perfect. He is acting with his whole heart and soul, it's so real and so visceral
While this is very much a comedy, it's still a legit zombie movie, paying a huge tribute to George Romero's work. It turns out that Romero was actually a fan of what they did, and when he had a new movie in his series coming up (Land of the Dead), he gave Pegg and Wright cameo roles in the movie as a couple of featured zombies in the background in one of the scenes ("Take your picture with a zombie"). There's some really fun documentary footage about it. My favorite bit is them reminiscing about Romero coming by and giving them some very brief direction, with Pegg saying in full fanboy mode "We've just been directed by *George Romero*!"
There are so many little tributes! i loved Romero in high school and this came out and it was so good. Hot fuzz still is peak but its as you say, a great zombie movie in its own right, just happens to be hilarious on purpose this time.
hell yeah! for sure one of my favourite movies :D Can't wait for the rest of the cornetto trilogy, gotta say Hot Fuzz is probably the best one all around though all of them have their strengths!
There are a lot of hidden things in the movie. Example, after the breakup when Ed tells their plan for the next day, he mentions bloody mary's, then the zombie in their garden is named Mary, and she gets bloody. The end of the plan was to stagger back to the Winchester for shots. They "staggered" while acting like zombies to the Winchester and shot the gun. I also heard something somewhere about how the characters' names rhyme with their fate by the end of the movie.
Oh I'm excited for your reactions to these! Especially as you seem to appreciate the film making side of things so much! I'm not great at that stuff but even i can tell these are special, especially Hot Fuzz!
Even if just in your spare time, taking a look at Spaced is worth it. It's a British TV show directed by Edgar Wright and written by Simon Pegg and the woman who played his ex in Shawn of the Dead. It's only 2 seasons with 6 episodes each. They actually got the idea to do a comedy zombie film together while filming an episode of Spaced.
Honestly, every single one of Edgar Wright's films have that rewatch factor to them. Not just because they're awesome, but all the tiny little details come to the surface once you've rewatched a scene enough times. Like this one. When Shaun and Ed escape the house in Pete's car, the shopkeeper zombie has his hand outstretched while none of the others do. Not in a threatening way, more "You owe me 15p, remember?" There's tons like this in the whole trilogy. Good luck finding them all in one go :D
I saw this in 2004 or 2005 my dad rented it at blockbuster. When he got it there was only one copy available at blockbuster. A week later it was so in demand there was 10 copies
It's worth noting that Diane survived after tearing off David's leg and rushing out into the hoard. Once she was outside she realized it was pointless to save him and climbed up a tree, staying out of reach of the zombies while using David's leg as a weapon until help arrived.
This one always has a special place in my heart. It was the first movie I saw in theaters after moving to Germany. Still friends with the people I went with even after coming back to the states. Also, my intro to Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg. Even got a Coronado at the theater without knowing the significance. Just a great time.
Ed's description of the next day, in regards of drinks, wound up being what would happen that next day with Shaun and Ed. (ex. -- the Bloody Mary was with the first zombie they deal with) The fence hopping -- keep that in mind, when you watch Hot Fuzz and The World's End.
A great comedy, and a bunch of great zombie pop culture Easter eggs. For example, there’s a reason that Fulci’s is “The Place That Does All The Fish”, and it involves a zombie fighting a shark. To be fair to their obliviousness, when you’re used to encountering people on the way home from pubs late at night, some of them probably staggering and groaning, looking ill from having too much of a night out, that just seems like how normal life (rather than undeath) goes.
This movie and all of the Cornetto trilogy, but particularly the next one Hot Fuzz, you have to watch many times to catch everything. Hot Fuzz is like the most efficient movie ever as well as brilliantly funny, every line is either a direct joke, foreshadowing or reference to something! It’s genius 👍
All of the jumpcuts and zoom in's, it somewhat reminds me of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Of the trilogy i would say its my 2nd fav. Still my first time experiencing it i was thoroughly entertained via dvd in the comfort of my home enjoying a movie night with the fam. Just an aside one of my fav films is Hitckhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
This and Hot Fuzz have gotta be my favorite movies to watch, they're just a blast every time. I loved your commentary, you pick up on so many things I never really see reactors pick up on, and you lay down SO MUCH RESPECT for my man Edgar Wright, I LOVE IT!!!
I Love your reaction also the way he walks in his street and doesn’t notice anything I would be like this in Europe blood on walls is normal for real . Also in reality how many people would believe zombies are real ? 😂 but yeah I would be like whatttt . Greetings from France 🇫🇷
Just noticed that zombie Barbara wasn’t that hostile…..until David shouted “Do it!” And even then it looked like she was hissing at David rather than Shaun, implying that deep down, even she didn’t like him.
I watched this movie when I was 13 and I loved zombie movies as a teenager, and now this is one of my favorites of all time. Also now I know that a lot of people in Europe don't have air conditioning, so that could explain why some people might leave their whole door open! Also this is the most deserved reaction for this movie I've seen, it's the best, thank you Ange!
Thanks for such a great reaction... Another Simon Peg and Nick Frost film you must see is Paul. It's not part of the Cornetto Trilogy, it was made quite a bit later. Oh, and watch the Unrated version, this has extra scenes so the storyline makes more sense, and has far better jokes...
This is one of my favorite movies ever! It's funny, has lots of gore, touching moments... and the actors are great! The whole Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy is amazing, but this one is my fave
I'm not a fan of zombie movies in general, but I love this one. Simon Peg, Nic Frost, and Jessica Hynes (she's the one that Shaun speaks too a few time, and comes with the army at the end) all worked on a TV series called "Spaced", in fact a lot of the cast are all great friends that have known each other for year, anyway, the reason why I bring up the show "Spaced" is that it has a cult following in the UK, and a lot of the extras (aka zombies) are fans of the show. Also, this movie has a lot of hidden references to other zombie films, and even Ed's monologue to what Shaun needs to do to get over Liz, resembles close to what they did during the attack. Wake up to a bloody Mary (the woman zombie in the garden has a name tag...Mary) A bite at the king's head (lots of UK kings were called Philip) Etc. Even the place that does the fish, if you look at the advert in the phone books, it calls itself that too! 😂 So worth a 4th or 5th rewatch.
This movie was Nick Frost's (Ed) first movie! He got his first part in the British comedy series 'Spaced' with Simon Pegg (Shaun) after being flatmates (roommates) with him for a long time. That comedy was slightly based on Simon and Nick's time together that role. Simon actually asked Edgar Wright to cast Nick for the role of Ed as he felt no one else could pull off the chemistry of a longtime flatmate like him. Paid off in the execution completely. 😂 🙌
Love your reactions to this 😂😂😂.... all the friends i had showing them this movie were either quiet while watching it or were texting throughout the movie.
So, David!!! Yeah, the character is an absolute TWAT! However, the actor Dylan Moran is an Irish stand-up comedian who is absolutely hilarious. Another fun little fact, both Nick Frost and Simon Pegg had guest appearances in Dylan's, BBC comedy series, Black Books, his character is the exact opposite of David, highly recommend giving the short, sweet series a watch.
I've seen many reactions to this movie and yours was THE BEST!! Very observant and of course it's always fun to watch someone enjoy something I enjoy myself. Can't wait for you to react to the entire trilogy and maybe some other films of theirs as well!
Edgar did a really nice breakdown of the 2 One-shot routines in SOTD and it's amazing that that scene was very nearly not shot for the movie, but they snuck it in and it's so iconic today
First time checking out your channel this one of my all time favorite movies and i just love your energy and quirkiness relatable and Charming you’ve got another subscriber here🎉🎉🎉🎉
I recently watched Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz and I loved them! (I live in the UK, so there's no surprise). I randomly saw your channel in my recommended as I was vibing to I MONSTER by The Blue Wrath. Anyway, keep up the great work!
One of my favourite films. Well worth another watch, there’s so much detail to spot a second time around, especially the foreshadowing. Like the scene where Pete berates Shaun & Ed for coming back drunk and waking him up. He shouts at Ed “you wanna live like an animal? Go live in the shed.” And by the end of the movie, a zombie Ed is living, chained up, in the shed.
Great reaction, as several others mention the trilogy of films was preceded by a tv series called 'Spaced' which you should also check out, if you love this film you'll love 'Spaced'.
I stumbled across your channel today. I had to laugh when you said "ridonkulous." I thought I was the only person who actually used that word. Fun reaction to one of my favorite movies!
You have successfully just watched the O.G Zomcom! First of its kind! I believe zombieland was the next but! Truly, there aren’t enough of these films for the genre! Here’s to many more!! Your gonna love worlds end! :) Great reaction so glad you got this done!! :D
O.G zomcom? What on earth are you talking about? Have you never seen Return of the Living Dead (1985) or Braindead (1992)? Braindead (US title: Dead Alive) even managed to beat Shaun to be the first RomZomCom! 😃
Absolutely one of my favorite zombie movies as well. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE CORNETTO TRILOGY! My experience of this movie, I was actually a child when I first watched this 😂 Still one of my favs! ❤️
This is one of my all time favorites, it’s so cool to see someone appreciate all of the cool choices made by the director and actors! It manages to be both scary and funny, kinda like one of my other faves Scream.
The natural progression: 0:35 "If this one isn't good, I'm going to judge y'all so hard." 12:24 "Edgar Wright. I'm lookin' at you buddy! You're so good at what you do. Never stop making movies, please!" But yeah.I love the subversion of the genre. Zombies are, in my opinion, a big metaphor for the inevitability of death. It's slow and lumbering and you can evade it for a time, but eventually you get worn down and you lose. That's it. No pity, no remorse, no motive. Nothing personal. That's just the way it goes. But in _Shaun of the Dead_ it's Shaun that's the zombie. He's not really living his life. He's unobservant, inactive and stuck. And now, Zombies are the metaphor for finally growing up (some. He's still playing video games with zombie Ed, after all) and start really living!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and definitely my favorite zombie movie. It cemented Edgar Wright as my favorite director, and I've lost count of how many times I've seen it. A couple of fun facts: 1) Dianne survives. After coming to her senses and realizing that she can't save David, she escapes the zombies by climbing a tree, and stays up there for days until the zombies clear out. She avoids starving to death by slowly eating pieces of David's leg. 😬 2) One of the zombies shown on tv at the end of the movie trips and falls. This was unscripted, but everyone thought it was so funny that it stayed in the final cut.
I’ve seen this movie sooooo many times but I was today years old when I actually realized “The Hobbit” has a cameo in this… the guy right behind the lady friend when they bump into the other group
This is one of my favourite movies. I love Edgar Wright he’s also one of my favourite directors aside from Sam Rami, John Carpenter and Zack Snyder. I love his directing style how he mixes comedy, drama, gore, horror ect.
I have literally never seen or heard of anyone who was freaked out by the quick cut montages lmao. Id get used to them if your going to watch the rest of Cornetto because Edgar Wright uses them ubiquitously.
This movie was SUCH a pleasant SURPRISE. Which one of the films in the Cornetto Trilogy is your favorite?
Hot fuzz!
Hot Fuzz is my favorite, but I grew up in a place like where it is set.
The World's End, it's really underrated.
@@mrdoctorgilmore yup yup

shaun being so stuck in his routine he doesn't notice all the signs of the undead is one of the best parts of this film. Ed just rolling with it is hilarious.
It’s so realistic tho cos I would be the same, especially after I’ve gotten out of bed in the morning 😂
He also has a massive hangover.
nah he was still drunk and he was tired lol he would of noticed the streets being empty and everything destoryed and ppl walking weridly
I always thought that he was so hung over that he couldn't concentrate on anything else than the task at hand. I mean I've been there myself 😄
George Romero (The Grandpa of Zombie flicks) liked this movie so much that he invited Simon and Edgar to be zombie extras for a day in Land of the Dead...and Romero pretty much hated most zombie flicks because he thought they weren't original enough.

You should check out the song They`re coming to Get You, Barbara by No More Kings ;) I think you would like it
That bit where Dylan Moran gets ripped out the window is such a nice little tip of the hat.
It’s always the weirdest movies that directors love. Like Chris Nolan is a huge fan of fast and furious

@@BassLineProductionsI Don't feel bad. Romero himself didn't get the reference until Edgar and Simon explained it to him :P
the fact that you went into this not knowing it was a zombie movie actually made my dayy
One of the funniest zombie comedy horror films ever!
*One of the funniest FILMS ever, period.
*FIXED 😊
Or maybe the Zombiest Romantic Comedy?
It is a documentary not a film.....

Also, this movie has a lot of hidden references to other zombie films, and even Ed's monologue to what Shaun needs to do to get over Liz, resembles close to what they did during the attack.
Wake up to a bloody Mary (the woman zombie in the garden has a name tag...Mary)
A bite at the king's head (lots of UK kings were called Philip)
Etc.
Even the place that does the fish, if you look at the advert in the phone books, it calls itself that too! 😂 So worth a 4th or 5th rewatch.
Ehh there weren't any English Kings called Phillip.
yup. another one of those movies that are shockingly good. i wasn't expecting anything but it blew me away.
This is one of the BEST MOVIES EVER!!!!
Love your reactions to this 😂😂😂.... all the friends i had showing them this movie were either quiet while watching it or were texting throughout the movie.
This movie is HYSTERICAL! Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are great together. I love Edgar Wright films.
yes finally a good youtuber reacting to an under rated zombie movie
So, David!!! Yeah, the character is an absolute TWAT! However, the actor Dylan Moran is an Irish stand-up comedian who is absolutely hilarious. Another fun little fact, both Nick Frost and Simon Pegg had guest appearances in Dylan's, BBC comedy series, Black Books, his character is the exact opposite of David, highly recommend giving the short, sweet series a watch.
Fido was a decent zombie movie that kinda shows you what life would be like at the end of Shawn of the dead.
damn haven't seen that one in yeaaaaaars, I loved it when I was younger
The quick cut editing montage is Edgar Wright style. He uses it often, like a signature style.
Love your honesty
Glad that you’ll see the remaining films of The Cornetto Trilogy! My favorite zombie comedy films!
First time checking out your channel this one of my all time favorite movies and i just love your energy and quirkiness relatable and Charming you’ve got another subscriber here🎉🎉🎉🎉
Flipping loved your reaction to this - one of my favourite ever films!
Not to say that Wright can’t… well write but when he’s paired with Pegg it’s perfect every time. Simon just knows how to write authentic dialogue
I recently watched Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz and I loved them! (I live in the UK, so there's no surprise). I randomly saw your channel in my recommended as I was vibing to I MONSTER by The Blue Wrath. Anyway, keep up the great work!
I never watched it because I knew I wouldn't find it funny, but you're reactions are, so thanks, ha ha.
4:24 Yeah, it’s Bill Nighy, he is also from Love Actually and Pirates of the Carribean 2 and 3.
Great reaction so glad you got this done!! :D
O.G zomcom? What on earth are you talking about? Have you never seen Return of the Living Dead (1985) or Braindead (1992)? Braindead (US title: Dead Alive) even managed to beat Shaun to be the first RomZomCom! 😃
This movie was a real pleasant surprise when I first watched it. 2004 was one of the best years to be a zombie movie.
Absolutely one of my favorite zombie movies as well. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE CORNETTO TRILOGY! My experience of this movie, I was actually a child when I first watched this 😂 Still one of my favs! ❤️
This movie is a certified classic!!! I remember when I first saw it back in the day 😊❤ Angelina you should definitely watch " Dawn of the dead" next.
This is one of my all time favorites, it’s so cool to see someone appreciate all of the cool choices made by the director and actors! It manages to be both scary and funny, kinda like one of my other faves Scream.
Old Zombie movie called "Dawn of the Dead"...ergo why the name of this movie is "Shaun of the Dead".
This movie has the best comedic timing of any movie I've ever seen!
I like how Shaun notices that something is wrong but when he is depressed and probably hungover he doesn’t know what’s going on in front of him
This helps me mentally in the sense that if a zombie outbreak actually happened, it would actually be kinda fun and funny lol
The natural progression:
0:35 "If this one isn't good, I'm going to judge y'all so hard."
12:24 "Edgar Wright. I'm lookin' at you buddy! You're so good at what you do. Never stop making movies, please!"
But yeah.I love the subversion of the genre.
The park where the guy gets ripped out the window and ripped apart is an amazing homage to Romaro's original.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and definitely my favorite zombie movie. It cemented Edgar Wright as my favorite director, and I've lost count of how many times I've seen it.
A couple of fun facts:
1) Dianne survives. After coming to her senses and realizing that she can't save David, she escapes the zombies by climbing a tree, and stays up there for days until the zombies clear out. She avoids starving to death by slowly eating pieces of David's leg. 😬
2) One of the zombies shown on tv at the end of the movie trips and falls. This was unscripted, but everyone thought it was so funny that it stayed in the final cut.
I’ve seen this movie sooooo many times but I was today years old when I actually realized “The Hobbit” has a cameo in this… the guy right behind the lady friend when they bump into the other group
If you like this, these guys also made a movie called Paul, which is about an alien❤❤ it's absolutely hilarious and I love it😂😂😂
This is one of my favourite movies. I love Edgar Wright he’s also one of my favourite directors aside from Sam Rami, John Carpenter and Zack Snyder. I love his directing style how he mixes comedy, drama, gore, horror ect.
Edgar wright just DOESNT MISS.
Not in the trilogy but Warm Bodies is another fun zombie movie.
I have literally never seen or heard of anyone who was freaked out by the quick cut montages lmao. Id get used to them if your going to watch the rest of Cornetto because Edgar Wright uses them ubiquitously.
I remember in 2020 when Covid was really starting to pick up speed globally the "Go to the Winchester" bit was so memeable.
David- Harry Potter
Shaun- Ron Weasley
Barbara- Ginny Weasley
Dianne- Hermione Granger
Liz- Luna Lovegood
Ed- Neville Longbottom
9:13 “please notice what’s happening” as she forgot that this is the same 1 one take she admired earlier 😂😂
So much to catch! Easy to miss
