  • Here we are, back with video 4 of this series - Improvised flute playing for beginners.
This time we explore how the breath and how that affects everything we have learned so far in this series, and indeed everything we will ever learn on flute. It’s both fundamental and advanced and in this clip I’ll show you some exercises to demonstrate the effects of breath control to achieve more accomplished playing in in general, as well going over all of the tricks from the previous videos and it effects those, amplifies and improves those techniques.
Next week I’m going to break from the more practical lessons of technique, and move onto how to elaborate, extend, add to the improvised playing we all end up resorting to and can feel stuck on.
    Or
I’ll share the story and background of how I was guided towards or found flute, what it means to me and the role it played in turning my life around.

You make it all very clear! Thanks a lot. Please keep these vids coming. Still waiting for my first flute, so can't practice it yet. 😅

My flute arrived and it sounds beautiful from it self. I 'm practicing the scale and integrating some pops, hops and slides. I try to improvise as well. I found out that, although the tones on the pentatonic scale are all harmonious, it doesn't mean just playing some tones on the scale will necessarily create something interesting. Could you perhaps make a video on the step from going up and down the scale to next step; improvising /creating an interesting melody that's nice hear?

@@Eric-lh6wp great that your flute has arrived, and that you’re practicing improv. Initially you can always add some sheet music to help tune in to various melody. I never did this but know it works for people.
Also, start at the bottom of the scale and try and find a melody using very basic notes in close proximity of each other, then gradually moving up to the top. Then try the same gradually manoeuvring to the bottom.
Your basically creating a simple melody moving in a gradual flow, using the scale to give you direction but not just playing the scale of that makes sense.
Watch other players too. Pick up a small part or parts of melodies you like and basically copy it BUT, I guarantee you’ll end up with something different. At first it might be simpler and easier to remember, but you’re then making it your own in a way. Don’t try too hard to exactly replicate it, but let it take you in a direction. 😊

@Robert-Leons thanks a lot Robert! Will try it. Copying small pieces I like and integrating them in my own creation is a good idea.

Oh man I was really looking forward to hearing that drone being played with both flutes 😅 but I think this is the best example I have heard of breath control while playing. Really enjoying the addiction of getting better myself!

I have a video of me playing it on Facebook etc but I’ll post it hear during the week 🤣. I never thought to demo the actual flute.
Thank you, great feedback on breath control example, much appreciated
