It’s got enough carbon to get as hard as a simple carbon steel can get without getting brittle and is easier to heat treat then 1095. 1095 may give some what marginally better edge retention but with a good heat treat, I’m not going to notice outside of testing.
@peterbiltknifeguy what did you sharpen this knife with? I got 2 of these Rat 7's & 2 Esee 6's! I batoned my Rat 7 vs my Becker BK 7 hard use and the BK 7 just barely did better! The BK 7 is 1095 but they were well matched but I give the edge to the BK 7 maybe because it's a hair thinner in thickness! I have a hard time getting a good edge on some knives sometimes! Thanks bro for your time doing these test! Thanks for sharing!
The guys over at esse used to design for ontario. This was their pattern . Rat. Randals adventure training. They eventually started their own knife company which is esse today. I also own an old rat 3 in d2 before they left.
I subscribed bro! I also laughed at the end when you said, "did you really think i wasnt going to do the nail test"? Keeping people laughing while doing knife videos is just cool!
Ontario used to be a pretty good company. My first RAT7 (maybe 20 years ago,) came screamin sharp and perfectly ground. I got another RAT7 in D2 along with a few Ranger knives that were all flawless. It's sad the way the company just deteriorated. Now you're lucky if you get something that's even usable outta the box. Nice work on that edge!!! ✌️
I was very lucky, I got my rat 7 around 2009 back when it was still 1095 and the quality control was still good. So mine has a perfect grind and a good heat treat. Also my handle slabs seem less square and the sheath is the old one so its much better than the new ones, its still nylon but its more like a tops sheath has a pocket and 2 horizontal snaps with molle on the back. And it was 60 bucks which in canada is a steel of a deal. An esee 6 is 200+ even back then it was about 170+
Well done...I purchased the Rat 6 in S35vn. I’ve had a very similar experience with it. It’s modularity with my Esee 6 parts and a bit of work especially to the edge, it’s proven to be a good blade too...
I bought mine a few tears ago at Bass pro shops. It came with a nice classic leather sheath but crap wood handles. I bought g10 handles with bow drill detents. I love it.
I was getting a hell of a lot of overtime in 2018 & 19. I went knife crazy. Bought one of all sizes of the rat's. Got some Ranger's too. I have all the matching Esse's too. Esse more comfy but okc gives you plenty of opportunity to grind the scales to fit. OKC sheaths are crap.
I did a batoning test between my Rat 7 & my Becker BK 7 and it was close but i give the edge to the BK 7 maybe because its a hair thinner! I laughed when he said, "@ssholes in cars"! Sounds like me when i hear someone rev up a loud car going by me! Lol
Nice! Old school! I got an RTAK-II in 2020 and it came fairly sharp. The radiusing on the scales is also way better than on your RAT-7 there or some of the other OKC offerings. The handle is massive but it fits in my hand alright.
I have some 1095 SP series before they switched to 1075. I cant tell the difference. Ive had some uneven edge bevels out of the box but they sharpen so easily. 👍
Thanks for review 👍 Could you do a comparison between the Rat-7 and the Eafengrow 158 ? The Eafengrow doesn't have that stupid fingerchoil, and costs about half the price of a Rat-7.😉
I didn't think you were gonna out the Ontario knife through the nail but I guess you did, try the butter knife, or your old lady's kitchen knife, or the Bravo 2
I know you’ve got to handle a lot of knives over the years. I’m looking for a larger survival/ bushcraft/ camp/ backpack knife. I have some smaller knives. I would like to know what you would suggest as a “one” larger do all knife? Maybe a couple different price points??? Like $100-175 and $175- 250??? And maybe a budget one????? Something you would actually pack and has a ton of use for its large size. Something like this??? Or what. Just want an honest opinion
Maybe somewhere in the range of eseee 6, rat 7, Esee jungalas….. just something that is capable of doing some chopping, batoning, etc? What would be worth the money

Ontario knives have always been good, in my opinion, but they are a project knife. They are something you have to do modifications to if you want something that is fantastic. I guess that's why I have always gone the Esee route. I do not have to mod. an Esee they come already well done from the factory for me and my taste. Great video as usual, and good try on the Firecraft!!! 🗡⚔️🔪🪓🔥
You totally got me i thought you weren't gonna put it through a nail. But it held up very well.
You didn’t see the nail part?
I know some people will have a problem because this knife's blade was switched to 1075 but don't realize how insanely tough it is.
I’m shocked too to be honest

@@peterbiltknifeguyI have never seen a mirror looking sharpened edge dude! I need your sharpener bro! Lol
@@Sambo169 it's not that hard to achieve with diamond stones and a few strops. Especially with your Becker's 1095cro-van, it takes a beautiful polish!

Love that blade I’ve had mine for years. It’s never let me down good presentation.
Happy that I have got two of this before they were out of stock.

It successfully battoned the head and tail off a 12 lbs. Steelhead...lol
