What a great bike. That thing is like the ultimate motorcycle. So many things that can be done with it, and it's absolutely bullet proof. 100k and nothing but basic maintenance. Tour. Café. Adv. The possibilities are endless.
If 20-30 miles on a sportster is an adventure I can say I go on an adventure everyday 37 miles to work and back every day. Every 2-3 days I have to grab wrenches and tighten up everything that has come loose.
a couple of years ago i turned a $200 '81 gl1100 goldwing into an ADV bike. i stripped off all of the fiberglass and extraneous whatnot, and added some motocross bars and pegs, but i kept the stock fuel tank location for a low center of gravity, and did a single carb conversion. i'm running kenda big block tires, and while it's not a bmw 1200gs, it still goes where i want it to. i can ride most of the trails i run my xt 250 on, just slower. i'm thinking about adding a small winch up front. i ain't got it stuck yet, knock on wood, but i'm mid fifties, and it is still around 700 lbs. so, yeah. one thing i still haven't figured out is how to get more rear ground clearance with the shaft drive, so i just pump up the air ride suspension. i did add a fire extinguisher bottle as a small reserve air tank to help it out though. i get some crazy looks from guys on dirt bikes out on the trails, but everyone seems to get a kick out of it.
I did the MABDR in October! Great ride, lots of cool places and views along the way. The dorkster should do fine, just don’t rush yourself. There are a few spots in the sections in PA with some nice sand so you should feel right at home.
Leaving the state, or even your own town, with an old sportster can be an adventure. You don't even have a handle on fuel consumption yet, this is guaranteed to be an adventure. Progressive 412's with the heavy springs are a huge improvement over those Burly shocks. Overall it looks like the bike is up to the task, did really well for a bike that can still eat up highway miles.
Don't even worry about the Sportster. Just think, the WLA's, (WW2, 45 cubic inch Flathead) were used off road. They were weighed down with gear for dispatch riders. They were ALL steel and cast iron, no aluminum no suspension. Those bikes are still running today. Have fun and be safe on your trip.
The 883 has a good reputation it is going to be interesting to Watch it go through the paces I have heard people say that the 883 is 1 Harley‘s best engines ♥️ ⛽️GAS⛽️$3,99 - $4,99⛽️ Love from DeKalb Mississippi USA 🇺🇸
Great video! Was interesting for sure. And good shoutout for the DR WarPig owners out there. The DR650 is the all around badass of badass bikes. But what u did here is a contender! Looking forward to watching the big trip.
I can’t believe you mentioned being lost. I was just thinking that and how you said you were bad at directions. Lol! Awesome video. Glad the sportster is working out!!!
Your sand riding is so impressive man. I look forward to getting lots of tips on this trip. I’m new to offroad but I feel confident in my build. My skill however will need to be built along the adventure. Going to be a great week!!
Adam, you’re being a bit modest! Lol…. I have no doubt that all of you will have a challenging, but great ride! Your TAT trip was very good and one of your best riding series of videos. Lots of fun to virtually tag along with you and hopefully watch your videos on this trip too! Ride safe my friend!
The spider! Awesome. I lived in Tampa and saw some pretty knarly ones. Michigan has a few also. Nothing worse that hitting an orb spider web. They usually set dead center in the web. I caught one in the face and you never saw someone move as fast as I did.
Yea, I'm thinking he needs something set up more for a big touring bike. It'll probably be hard to find something like that with any kind of travel. Those Burly shocks are probably set up for a sub 200 lb rider and the weight of the stock sportster. Add an extra 100 lbs for the rider and then probably 100 lbs of gear/luggage, it's totally pushing it.
Of course it worked out Josh! People forget that the XLCH was sold as a dirt bike until the late 1960’s! The DNA is in there, you just gotta draw it out. Great video!
Spider reactions are my favourite part of croome Josh. Nicely played, glad you caught one for the views I'd be worse if I caught one. Haha. Love the OG spider cam from the croome episode, that was gigantic!
What an adventure! You should take it over to the Green Swamp. I took my '83 OldWing through it last year on the dirt hunting roads. All sand and mud puddles. But I learned how to handle the Beast in the sand. I didn't go off into the trees like you did but it was a good learning experience and a great adventure. Riding a 40 year old Bike is ALWAYS an adventure. And sometimes I even make it back home.
You took me back to the 1960s when most of the bikes going off road were stripped down road bikes with knobby tires and a shouval bolted on for a skid plate . Or Honda 90 with a massive rear sprocket. And toatgoates.
Hey mate!!! For me this is by far one of your more enjoyable videos... Great to see you enjoying the ride with out trying to kill the bike... Great Work!!!! 👍👍👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
There is NO WAY in the world I could ride through there knowing that those spiders "lay in wait".... As far as the bike goes, I think it handled it very well. I was tired just watching you brother. Good job Josh! PS: Believe me, people who DON'T live in Florida have no idea how hot & humid it can get down here. I'll take my chances riding in a t-shirt. It's at least bearable.
Before I got the Himalayan, I bought an old Sporty to turn into a Scrambler. After massive overheating issues at slow speed, I went another direction, but I'm eager to see how you and Jordan do. His bike is pretty awesome.
I instantly turn into a screaming teenage girl when I ride into a spider web lol. It happened one time with a group of friends and they had to take a 20 minute break because they were laughing so hard one of them almost threw up. On a side note, I picked up the Pan America last week. Been doing my off-road training for a planned Trans America run next June. Can not wait. Been planning it for a year. I’m going to continue to plan and also spend the next year getting into off-road shape again. I’d look at one of those cooling fans for the heads or an oil cooler with a cooling fan.
I did the mabdrbbqwtf on my 995 tiger and it's a cake walk. Great way to break the bike in before tackling the TAT. I'm really enjoying your process where you give yourself a few seconds here and there to gather yourself. That's important to staying in one piece and not getting yeeted miles from nowhere. I'm excited for you. You're gonna have a great time on that bike.
Awesome vid... I've been looking for a new bike and was thinking of taking the old SV650S and converting her for off road ... I've had it down enough trails now on street tires, its a logical step LOL New bike, new build, might as well resurrect my old Vtwinner channel as well.... coming soon to youtube :D
Hey man,if you're coming to Canada,via New York,take the Ogdensburg bridge.Turn west and drive 20 minutes to Brockville.We party.Great camping available as well.We're in the 1000 islands,man!
You are a pretty amazing motorcycle rider. And the philosophy is on point ha ha. Anyway I think you did a really great entertaining and informational video. I know you’re proud of yourself you made a great Motorcycle.
Awsome! Been waiting to see some off road action with the dirtster 🤘🏼I had the look up the weight... 544 pounds if thats correct... thats a big girl off road.
I would look into the spring rate on your rear. Everyone is different and ride different but your spring rate and sag will be everything on and offroad.
Hay shade tree been watching you for some time man just wanted to say I love your content. You are one of the few that never bored me. Keep up the great content man. You doing it big
that crash bar does seem like the best idea, a crash cage might be better but that straight bar is just gonna dig in if you do down at speed which won't be good
Depends on what part of TN you go thru it’s been around 90. Good luck and can’t wait to see how the trip goes I’ve been wanting to check out some BDRs and see what’s in Tennessee
I think your doing great. You will probably drop a lot of weight after doing that ride. As you know Adam had his custom made for him. I think you should get 100 extra points just for building your own bike. Fun channel.
~ 22:00 - I have banana spiders in my yard and once walked into one in the dark. It was right on my nose, across my face, and she was big. Otherwise, no problem. The only spiders in Florida I really don't want a bite from are the recluse, widow and wandering spiders.
Dude! That was great! You need a saddle blanket to roll up and put on the bike. Keep that Harley saddle tramp look. Those blankets are pretty handy too.
You should have done something funky and put some Vance and Hines short shots on the dirtster. Just to make it sound like a flamboyant loud Harley ripping through the woods.
New sub...Johnny Lee an English biker brought me here...had great things to say about shadetree... halfway through yer riding across America on a plastic maggot in 2 days....man that video is f****g hilarious...long live the malaise that is turd Ferguson. And RIP Norm too.😁🤔👍🙏
Croom is decent , but no place to enjoy a plated bike . You should try out Richloam next time . Turn right off the exit instead of left , go past the circle k at 50 , over the tracks and turn right on river and rd . It ends at an old general store and there are tons of fire roads and trails to ride beyond that . Best adv/dual sport riding to be had in central Florida for sure . ✌😉👌
Great video! Cant wait to see the big one. Hopefully you can get the rear shocks shorted out. Just got my motorcycle license so I guess mine are just beginning. Wish I had done it sooner
Get a big desert tank for it so you can grip it with your legs and have a lot more capacity. Sounds like you need to shim the rear springs or get stiffer ones! Good work though.
The only change I would definitely make is raising the font fender so sticky mud won't pack between the tire and fender and lock the front tire up, sucks to have to pick it all out with a stick to get going.
Bike and you done great.... The crash bar on the front really concerns me, no idea why... but I can only see it not helping in an accident... am probable wrong though. The original screen looks great, this bike is epic, can't wait to see you get on the trip!
I have a suggestion for some rear shocks. They’re are quite expensive but I’ve heard great things about the RWD x Walker Evans RS-1 piggyback rear shocks. They’re like $1,000 which is really unfortunate but I’m sure you can find something much better then the stilettos for much cheaper then $1,000. I'm very interested in a creek drop/ pick up,re start with that air cleaner, water scooper thingy. *We have those creek things in Tennessee. The Dakar brick lives!!!
Dang! I'm coming all the way from Pittsburgh to see the Dirty Shame this coming weekend and you're gonna be outta town! Safe travels and maybe I'll get to see ya next time🤘
If you wanted to spend the money you could tear that motor down and either buy new cylinders or have someone bore out your cylinders. Bring that 883 up to a 1200cc. So you get the quick revs that you want for this bike. 👍
I love this!!! I traded my softail for an Africa Twin last year, guess I should have just manned up and made the softail go where I wanted it to!
"This is a lot more sand that I'll have to deal with on the TAT" Lol, I can't wait for the video when he gets to the Oklahoma section.
This reminds me of when my buddies and I would take Street motorcycles off-road. My old XS650 had seen a few dirt trails.

As soon as you relaxed and started riding instead of worrying/wondering about the bike it handled just fine.
I love how you just go for it, it's as inspirational as it is ridiculous.

Alfred E Neuman would be proud. :P Can't wait to watch the trip with the other adv bikes. Take care, man !!

steel and iron still running not the bone and muscle that got beat by them !
All your work paid off. Great job man .

same weight and hp !
Nice build! Let the good times roll man! You will have a great time on your trip. Can’t wait to see you videos. Ride safe man!
With a full touring load on the back the shock spring will be even less useful. Such an interesting and fun bike build.

"This is way worse than anything I'll experience on the TAT!" Famous last words? 😄
😆
He said it was worse than anything on his practice run south to north. He said there would be a lot of sand and stuff on the actual TAT trip.
“If you’re ever lost in the woods, just build a house. Well, I was lost but now I live here!!”
I'm starting the tat tomorrow, would love to see a Harley ride up on me on the trail. Sweet!
Spider reactions are my favourite part of croome Josh. Nicely played, glad you caught one for the views I'd be worse if I caught one. Haha. Love the OG spider cam from the croome episode, that was gigantic!
The only concern you might have is running low speed for long periods of time overheating the engine. Great vids and content :)
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe a set of mighty mites to keep heat down.

Wonder if an oil cooler and a fan for slow speed would help, depends on how much oil hits the jugs (on the inside :D)
I think H-D missed an opportunity years ago by not building a factory Scrambler based on the XL.
@@HiroNguy Buell did.
@@mbsnyderc Are you thinking of the Ulysses? I wanted that bike! Maybe there's a good used one somewhere.
@@HiroNguy Yes.
Josh, I may not have an adventure bike but I'm still looking forward to your videos on this trip. It sounds awesome.

Sportster is gonna wear you out quicker than typical dirt bike because its so much heavier. Take breaks and stay hydrated my man, keep shreddin'

You are awesome.
I get scared sometimes too.
Keep up the great content!
You need to add some hand guards. A branch into the hand sucks!!!!! Awesome build brother. I love it.
You are a pretty amazing motorcycle rider. And the philosophy is on point ha ha. Anyway I think you did a really great entertaining and informational video. I know you’re proud of yourself you made a great Motorcycle.
Being totally honest, I’m pretty impressed with how well that bike is taking that terrain!

Kinda what enduro bikes are for, not a dirt bike, not a street bike, best of both worlds.
Argghhh ..banana spider! Congrats on a auccessful trip with the dirtster!
Seen a few other utubers take Harleys offroad on sand. Is harder than off road bikes , but obviously doable.
Dude! That was great! You need a saddle blanket to roll up and put on the bike. Keep that Harley saddle tramp look. Those blankets are pretty handy too.
Nice off road riding. Good luck with it. 👍
You should have done something funky and put some Vance and Hines short shots on the dirtster. Just to make it sound like a flamboyant loud Harley ripping through the woods.
60 years ago my dad tt drag raced n ran 500 mile enduroes on an xlch iron head sporty kick only
Awesome fun!! Road King rider now. Really looking at the Pan America to do a little hooligan riding!!
Should be in the Trampa area in July!!

The spider episode made the entire video for me. Great video.
Get a big desert tank for it so you can grip it with your legs and have a lot more capacity. Sounds like you need to shim the rear springs or get stiffer ones! Good work though.
MABDR will be a piece of cake on that , most of it you could do on a triumph scrambler , biggest worry will be fuel
offroad on a 883, you are the man dude big time ADV dude yeah
after your big adventure you might want to buy pistons, and bore the stock jug to 1200, put a stock 1200 carb on it, and enjoy the tons of torque.
those crash bars on the front might be a problem hitting something low.
The only change I would definitely make is raising the font fender so sticky mud won't pack between the tire and fender and lock the front tire up, sucks to have to pick it all out with a stick to get going.
They dirt race Sportsters non-stop, just look at Rusty Butcher 💪💪💪safe travels 🙏❣️
💪🇦🇺💪
you dismounted quicker for that spider. then when that car was flipping by you
Josh, don't forget to keep yourself hydrated.
Man that looked like a good time! Tame the beast
Things that aren't supposed to go off road. Put some dirt tires on the goldwing and take that. Ramming speed!
You should get a set of LUV JUGS for that bike for offroad to keep it cool in the slow stuff.
Bike and you done great.... The crash bar on the front really concerns me, no idea why... but I can only see it not helping in an accident... am probable wrong though.
The original screen looks great, this bike is epic, can't wait to see you get on the trip!
Yea fun times, doing great. It looks quite a bit heaver yet she’s taking it.
dribble some locktite in the ball area of that mirror, move it around a bit and set it where you want it to dry.
I like hearing your random philosophy as you ramble on.
Great fun video and in my tiny universe. SPORTSTERS RULE and that's just the way it is. 😁😎
Nice off roading!!!
Good times!!
👍🍻🖖
It's a hard to find but I think you would love an old 70's Harley Enduro. I used to have one years ago and it was a lot of fun
I’m not even doing these trips and I’m excited to see how everything goes. Good luck brother🤘
Spiders from Mars. Lol. I want to upgrade my road tires to something a little more off roadish. Mild upgrade.
I'm very interested in a creek drop/ pick up,re start with that air cleaner, water scooper thingy.
*We have those creek things in Tennessee.
The Dakar brick lives!!!
Luv jugs would be ideal, damn now I want a sporster,I've done gravel on my e glide.
Lovin'the huffy pad
Dang! I'm coming all the way from Pittsburgh to see the Dirty Shame this coming weekend and you're gonna be outta town! Safe travels and maybe I'll get to see ya next time🤘
Omg non matching wing mirrors are triggering my ocd something rotten. Lol.
Great stuff as always 👍
Your fear of spiders is hilarious. So much for being a swamp wizard…hahaha
that looked like fun to do it's going to be a great adventure 👌
If you wanted to spend the money you could tear that motor down and either buy new cylinders or have someone bore out your cylinders. Bring that 883 up to a 1200cc.
