My guest today is the historian Peter Parker, editor of a new two-part series of books titled 'Some Men in London', an anthology of sources written between 1945 and 1967 on gay life in London. We spoke about the perception at the time that homosexuality was rising exponentially in the postwar period, the relationship between the military and male prostitution, and the importance of the issue of blackmail in the campaign for decriminalisation.
In the extended part of the episode, we also spoke about the medicalisation of homosexuality, the legal status of lesbianism, and the extraordinary story of Jeremy Thorpe.

We need to get Peter Parker and Tom Holland on a podcast together 😂
Yes! It would be so confusing to non-British people. 😂
I once went into the Biograph Cinema in Victoria unaware of its reputation as a gay pick-up venue. An elderly gentleman followed me home after the movie. I tried to shake him off but it was rather difficult.
I notice gay historians wildly exaggerate how common homosexuality was in the past.
I once heard the reason lesbianism was legal was that nobody could bring themselves to tell Queen Victoria what it was.
is this guy Spiderman?
Are all English historians named after Spider-Man?
And yet they wear Clark Kent eye glasses
Louise is such a beautiful woman. Easy on the eye!
True. Her husband is a lucky man
I always thought gays in the armed forces were thought to be weak and prone to shaming and bullying because of censure in the wider society.
Actors were always semi mythical creatures. Everyone fancied them as friends whose company they enjoyed, but who they could be distanced from and 'drop' at a moment's notice.
The role of actors and comedians as an avenue for testing and refining popular acceptability cannot be under estimated.
The censorship of the morality of performers is a very dangerous and repressive condition.
Woke morality is worse than conservative censure in this respect.
The double entendres of the seaside post card, vaudville and stand up comedian could always resist the prudishness of the conservatives by dressing the risqué up as sexual slapstick - the British coined the term "camp" for this purpose.
Conversely the Woke insist on politicising and codifying behaviour as either in or out with no grey areas, no ambiguity or humour.
Confirmed bachelor is a term I've struck.
Wow, whenevr I poke fun at some topic a few days before, it becomes an interesting history lesson a few days ltr, which has some degree of influence on a bunch of ppl.
Um, so it's funny I guess, how um, trwls are maybe modern-day aphorists, and they were perhaps historically under-compensated relative to their subtle contributions to discourse, and um, there were historically and should be modern-day efforts to address this grave injustice...?
Rainbow Inc. omg, we’re so done.
From Saint Augustine’s Confessions, “And are not sordid acts against nature universally detested and punished, as the Sodomites were? No matter how many commit such sins, they would still be criminal, falling under the divine ban on such male couplings. Our proper bond with God is violated if we taint the nature he has given us by sexual perversion.” Note the line, “no matter how many commit such sins…” they are still wrong…
Everything that is good came out of Christianity 😄
It`s great to be Australian and have no class😁
Still no Matriarchs...yet we get recent local Male homosexual history, fascinating as it may be.
I'm all for occaisional off beat topics as it keeps things fresh & varied but the Matriach to Queer episode ratio challenges the former even being relevant in the series name.
Well said
Censored for saying "well said."
LoL it came back
God does not want people to practice homosexuality. You must have faith.
