Late to the party on this but I wanted to say that this video IS super helpful for beginners. I just started a few weeks ago, and other "beginner" lessons went straight into a bunch of inversions which I could NOT handle. Your lesson hit what beginners actually need, work on strength and flexibility, before trying to go into crazy poses and inversions. And then, just a hint of inversion at the end to start practicing. I could NOT do this whole lesson at first. I didn't even do the inversion the first time. Instead, I went back to this lesson over and over again. I guess what I am saying is... beginners, use this as a flexibility/conditioning tool, and master it before moving on to other lessons. It's actually great for getting you ready for other moves.
You get it!! Thank you for this comment, that’s exactly what I was aiming for with this video. Conditioning is important before being able to get crazy in the silks.
this is actually what my issue with finding beginner tutorials was too! so many were like "lets start you out with like 5 inversions and poses that you will likely need to call for your other or hope a neighbor hears you when u get stuck" lol
i absolutely love the beginner entry-level poses you showed here, it seems every "beginner" based aerial silk video i watch jumps right into advanced hammock poses and i cannot at all do them without feeling like im gonna get stuck. lol, i love how you showed the versatility of the hammock
kattie!!! Thank you for my amazing first aerial practice this morning! Even the videos that came with my aerial trapeze and silks were impossible for me. I was discouraged last night but found your video and I couldn't wait to start this morning. You restored my excitement in my new silks!!! Thank you and I will continue with your lessons!
Thank you! This compliment means a lot. Haha , the “unnecessary talking” remark cracks me up, I was just telling my fiancé, after we practiced together, that I feel like I really gip him on the yoga teacher talk because I cue him very little.
Thanks Kattie. Just got my aerial hammock. I did what I could, but can definitely see how strength will build quickly. that was a lovely class. Strong women needed in this world. xxx
You're fierce and a good teacher! Thank you so much for taking the time to present a beginners series. People love to post their advanced work as it looks so impressive, but it's not going to motivate a total newb. *Maybe include some music next time to enrich the experience. I'm definitely subscribing! Thanks again.
Maribelle Lebre thank you! My fiancé is a musician and we’re working on a music collaboration for my future videos, that way we don’t have to worry about copyright issues. Check out some of my ground yoga videos and the rest of my aerial videos!
Thanks this is great. My first go uesterday and I felt queasy! Had another go in the evening and wasn't as bad. Tough going and really enjoyed it! Like another commenter here,I'll be repeating this over and over til I'm confident and not sure I'll get the inversion at the end for a few practises. Thanks for the clear instructions! Taragh
ヤナギダヨシコ aw, thank you! This means a lot. Check our my other videos on the channel. There are some restorative aerial practices too, nice to do when you’re sore or in need of rest.
Wonderful! You're going to love having them in your house. I hope to post more videos. I really meant to make it a series, but life gets in the way! Plus I teach 10+ classes a week!
wow! I need these starting with the first one. Hips hurting bad, this might help, going to have to figure a place for me to do this at home. Well the first exercise anyway, some of those look hard.
Can you recommend a favorite silk product? I am really unsure what to order on Amazon. My husband has constructed a robust outdoor stand and I just need the silk. I'm sure there are cheap ones and I want to avoid the disappointment of not liking it. Thanks for any recommendations. I can't wait to start!
Any recommendations on a good starter swing? I was originally wanting to get some kind of swing for my two-year-old but then figured why not get some thing that I can also use. Would you recommend a swing over aerial silks or a yoga swing with handles? I’m sure they are all different and I’m a total beginner.
I bought a yoga swing pro that came with handles. Can I still do your lesson with this setup? It is not a silkie, I didn't know there was a difference until I saw your video.
Yes. In fact, I have one of those swings too. I still do similar flows on it. I like that yoga swing for TRX type workouts though! If you have the rig, check out dasking aerial hammocks on amazon :) you will not be disappointed!
@@kattieyogamama Oh awesome! im getting set up now to run through your routine! I was able to go upside down the other day, but needed a blanket behind my lower back because the material felt like it was cutting into me a bit. Im excited to try this!
Hannah Mana diaper wrap is very uncomfortable, but one thing you can do is fluff your hammock out all the way and then fold it half by meeting the two ends, sit down in folded hammock like a chair with fabric going up your lower to mid back. This will spread the fabric across you and might make it more comfortable, the only thing is it makes it harder to transition quickly if you were doing a flow. I’m glad you enjoyed it! Please check out my other videos, I’m thankful for your subscription. Namaste 🙏🏼
Hi, I’m new to yoga hammock and would like to ask a question..how far apart should hammock hooks be? I’ve read thwt anywhere between 16inches to 24inches to 32inches. Can anyone help please?
Haha! It is a difficult conditioning exercise, I’ll say! Some prior yoga or fitness knowledge would be helpful, but it is fairly beginner. If you want more beginner check out one of my videos where the hammock is set really low.
Where do you suggest I purchase Ariel silks? I currently have a yoga trapeze, but like you mentioned in another comment, I can't play around with fun tricks.
Is there a way to modify that first double arm wrap to have less pressure on the forearm? I had wrist surgery 3 months ago and that pressure was very painful
Kerry Bieschke for the “pulling taffy” exercise is what you mean, make a pocket for your elbow by fluffing out the fabric and making sure your elbows are in it. This exercise should not put pressure on your wrists, however, I would consult with my doctor if I were you to make sure your wrist is healed enough to do that exercise, if pulling taffy is still painful, I don’t want anyone to hurt! Please check out my aerial low flow video, it’s more gentle.
M Redfearn any aerial practice does require upper body and core strength, but this lesson 1 practice will help you gain the strength you need! A consistent yoga practice also strengthens you.
Hi Kattie, can you tell me why when I am inverted the material digs into my back and skin and hurts? I can get inverted but the hammock is digging in so hard that I am so sore for days where it was sitting. Any tips? Maybe I have the wrong material?
Make sure it is low enough on your back but not too low, right above your butt cheeks, think where hip hugger jeans hit. A little discomfort when you first start practice is to be expected but if continues see if anything needs to be adjusted to feel better. Happy flying!

Any particular favorites of yours? I work with prints too and it would be cool if I found a distributor that could print on silks for me too. :) creative dreams lol. Eraj Afzal you can increase muscle mass which may lead to increased weight. It is not possible to increase height, but aerial may improve your posture which can give the appearance of a longer body.
You have to get stretched out before you can achieve other techniques, if you actually do the workout, you would see that a lot of this is conditioning as well, to strengthen the arms and core and get used to the hammock as this is actually quite hard work.
It’s a short aerial yoga lesson, have you seen other 20 minute long yoga videos on RUclips? While stretching before a cardio or weight training workout can reduce muscle growth it isn’t unsafe, however it’s best to stretch after those workouts to increase flexibility once muscles are warm but also tight and contracted. In this practice, stretching is part of the conditioning. It’s all about stretch and strength.
