- From director Clint Eastwood, Invictus tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa's underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.
How in the world did i not watch this movie until today 10/05/24. Super inspirational and heartwarming. Got me teared up most of the time. Amazing cast and a masterpiece by the great Clint Eastwood!🙌

My friend was the American Ambassador in SA at that time and got to meet Morgan Freeman when he invited him to the ambassador's residence for dinner. He couldn't say enough wonderful things about Mr. Freeman.
Damon's most underrated film. Hands down

For Americans that NZ team South Africa beat in the final were regarded as terrifyingly unbeatable. A bit like Mike Tyson in his prime. Lomu was like having Godzilla on your side.

Clint Eastwood had directed a biopic about Charlie Parker, one of the great pioneers of jazz called Bird starring Forest Whitaker, made Invictus, a Nelson Mandela biopic, starring Morgan Freeman, who Eastwood previously directed into an Oscar-winning performance in the film, Million Dollar Baby for best supporting actor, made the film Letters From Iwo Jima, based on the historic battle and completely from the viewpoint of the Japanese in a sympathetic way. In his personal life, Clint supported the equal rights amendment for women, supported gay marriage, defended Sean Penn's and Tim Robbins views on the war in Iraq, etc. But forget all that! He said this current generation is too politically correct and preferred Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton... so he is still a racist and sexist bigot...morons.

South Africa was ruled by the English until 1961 so how could they not have been involved in apartheid?
South Africa became fully independent in 1931. Apartheid began in 1948.
Apartheid was primarily driven by Afrikaners, who are of Dutch ancestry, not those of British ancestry.
@@jliller oh that is a lie. South Africa was a BRITISH COLONY it never belonged to the Netherlands and English is the primary language of the government there ( not Dutch). Your constant lies don't work. Britain was a by far more powerful colonizer than the Dutch and South Africa has ALWAYS HAD A VERY CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH BRITAIN. So when apartheid was going on Britain could have done something to stop it. And did not. You british are such a bunch of liars you never take responsibility for the problems you created in northern Ireland in Palestine and in South Africa. Britain was the ones who created the problems there. The british started apartheid in South Africa and it was Britain's colony UNTIL 1961 THAT IS THE TRUTH.

The Cape was originally settled by the Dutch who were there for centuries before the British established the Cape Colony. Although the Afrikaners were defeated and absorbed into South Africa by the British in the Boer Wars, their values (including their deep-seated racism) took on an outsized role in South African white culture and politics. Not entirely unlike the defeated Confederates in the USA.
The Union of South Africa was nominally independent in 1910 and fully independent in 1931 (not 1961, as you originally asserted). Aparteid began in 1948 after the National Party, an Afrikaner-centric party, came to power. South Africa would later be condemned by much of the international community.
British colonialism certainly has plenty of problems, in South Africa and elsewhere. The British probably could have done more against Apartheid, but it wasn't their country anymore. Many descendants of British colonists are guilty of supporting Afrikaner racist policies, just as many whites from other places moved to the American South and came to support the racist policies there. But you need to seriously lay off your Anglophobia.
As for the black South Africans cheering England against South Africa in rugby in 1994: I doubt there were cheering the English for being anti-racist. They were cheering whomever was playing against South Africa, because the South Africa national team was seen as symbolic of apartheid. Not only had the team been a semi-formal representative of the apartheid government for four decades, the team captain was an Afrikaner and the team had no black players until 1995.

It is so sad that the hopes expressed in this film never came to reality. South Africa is now a third world hell hole. Corruption is rife everywhere, infrastructure is crumbling, crime (including an unbelievable murder rate) is out of control. It is ironic that South Africa was MUCH better off under Apartheid than it is today. It puts meaning to the words "Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it".........
South Africa could either prosper or sink,,, that's the reality. And sure, perhaps under apartheid the economy, the politics and everything around it could have blossomed,, but ask yourself this; would it have been worth it?
Is a first-world South Africa really worth its native people living quite literally like how the slaves did in the west? Is it worth a nation being divided by fear and hate? Is it worth all the human rights violations?
We need to remember,, the wounds of apartheid are still very, very fresh. There are people in their mid twenties who lived through apartheid, so we can't expect an instant shift into rationalism. With proper guidance, South African could gradually find themselves and hopefully deal with the past appropriately; because in a nutshell that's where all the chaos comes from. Gaps have not been bridged yet.
I'm not South African, in fact I'm from the neighbouring Eswatini. I'm very close to the action but far enough to give an objective and unbiased opinion. 🙂

Fantastic film but let’s not forget that the All Blacks were deliberately (food) poisoned (allegedly), players and administration. They lost 15-12 - not bad for 2/3s of the squad not playing at their peak. Jonah Lomu was also diagnosed that same year with genetic nephrotic syndrome, later having kidney dialysis, a kidney transplant and sadly an early death at 40.
