Belfast still split by 'Peace Walls'

- REPORT : In 2002, Belfast's Short Strand neighbourhood was rocked by violent riots. Since then, calm has returned, but the "peace walls" still lie between Northern Ireland's Catholic and Loyalist communities.
Well done , Bhoyspacer never noticed it and hes the spelling and grammer police ! My point is merely this , why pull up minor typos and spelling mistakes on a subject as sensitive as "The Troubles" . I also spelt pulling with only one "l" , you missed that one eh !
@pmanngw That's nonsense. The Brits had the chance to leave here in 1918 and between 1974 and 1976. They didn't take them. Why do spend so much money on the north's block grant and the PSNI?
@LordWellington15 Who says the Brits want them there? I rememeber back in the early 90's, I asked a teacher what the Orange Day procession was, and he said "the less said about them, the better." I asked another, and she said "they're Irish Protestants, and wherever they go, things get scary."
This is kind of off topic but I LOVE the Northern Ireland accent. I could listen to that all day.
Me? Neither Cause I'm an outsider observing the whole issue because I take an interest in understanding why similiar religions are constantly at each other's throats. Well, I actually take an interest in understanding things in general so that i can learn from societies and people's mistakes. It's all about understanding differences AND being aware as to who and what is causing conflict and social divide behind our backs for their own self-interests.
@MondoBeno Why yes, yes I am, thankyou for noticing.
@MondoBeno If England doesnt want Loyalists there, why are there so many Orange Lodges in England???
There are hardly any Orange lodges in England what are you on about most Protestants in N Ireland came from
Scotland and our Presbyterians which is far more associated with the orange lodge you have a lot of orange halls in Scotland but not England just a few.
The opposite of ignorance is seeing things as they really are. From thought tow words to action to habits to character. BEWARE
I have a question for the citizens of northern ireland. I am american born. but my great grandmother was from antrim, ulster county. I wish to live in ireland one day and I am thinking of appealing to get irish citizenship, all i have to do is go to school there. I do, however, want to ask you, the current citizens, if you would object to a yank with irish blood moving to the north. after all, it's your country and you make the rules. by the way: i would NEVER EVER consider myself a shitloyalist
@gkelly2009
How? I speak the truth, if i dont, why hasnt thir been a vote?
so wat if its still split fs we dnt like each oer
The bitterness and struggle here is so palpable and is so sad and why can't something be done to make the people respect each others views, though I know that the occupation of Ireland is deeply resented, and it would be so lovely if something was done about that and all the trouble it's caused !
@Caryatides No, around half of Northern Ireland is Protestant, the other Catholic. But the Republic is mostly Catholic, I think it's at like 95%. And it isn't and wasn't a civil war. A civil war I would think was continuous open conflict, which never really happened. The closest it was to civil war was the early 70's. Around about 1500 people died in 6 years. 500 alone in 1972.
john isint a moderate he only talks about the rebblican paramilitaries not the murders carried out by loyaists
they werent technically in ireland they just sended ireland weapons
neither of them had belfast accents
Ah,I love the Irish. Like the Scots-good people.Although this "peace" wall is akin to Israel's security barrier contorted into an"Apartheid"Wall the former strive between Protestant and Catholic Ireland was exacerbated by the Communist movement.I think those who compare the two conflicts Ireland and Israel will only be getting a partial view because Israel's is also political and religious however Islam's has been making war on all non-Muslims since 622 as Europe's "diversity" can attest today.
tsui921again- i fink ul find she said paramilitries on there side therefore she meant prods u clown
@carrythezero84 because you were born in america, you are american. But why not move to ireland and call yourself american-irish. By the way I wouldn't move to ireland at the minute. There is a severe job shortage, the cost of education is due to rise sharply in 2012 in the north of ireland and the irish republican government is in turmoil at the minute.
@010101o Historically? yes, Today? no...
Religion is one of the ultimate mothers of all fuck ups in human nature, regardless if many persistently believe it's nice and full of love, which is "quite" opposite to what is done in endless recounts like the one above. It's not any particular religion i'm refering to but it's usually the three Abrahamic religions that fuel these kind of conflicts and long term divides. If anyone should feel smart in condemning this argument: I challenge them to a debate.
The no surrender term comes from the apprentice boys of derry not surrendering derry to the fenians
