The fact that we can still
see these performances in this day and age, is everything ! Great escape !

RIP. Gone 30 years ago today. While great skaters continue to leave their mark on the sport both athletically and artistically, John Curry is likely to always remain #1 for me!

    The final camel spin-glorious.

The look on his face - true, you can’t see it that clearly, but you can at the end. It’s almost like he’s in a trance because he is so into the music. I’ve never seen that on ANY skater. The trance ends once the applause starts. A genius. Pure and not-so-simple.

In my opinion this performance eclipses his gold medal win. The musicality, the stretch, the whole interpretation is phenominal. His idol was Dame Margot Fonteyn and it shows!

And let's applaud Dick Button, who waiting 3/4 thru John's program to make any comment, encapsulated his greatness in one statement.

Watching today’s skaters i fee sad that they don’t seem to have learned anything from this great skater when they rush around the arena doing one disjointed trick after another without any apparent understanding of their chosen music. I find them all to disjointed. Curry was an amazing ARTISTE he combined music, ballet and skating to turn skating into an art form. Without him I don’t think we would have had Torvill and Dean who also used musical dance skills in their routines. I have recently watched the world ice dance finals and not one pair gave me the fulfilment of watching a routine like these three skaters would have performed. What a shame for the skating world.

I'm not ashamed to admit that watching this brought tears to my eyes. A better skater there never was and it's likely there never will be. Such a different experience from present day skating . . . where the arms flail meaninglessly as one rushes from one quad jump to the next and the spin positions are changed so quickly (in an effort to accumulate points) that the eye cannot appreciate any beauty that might be there. Where are the John Currys and the Belitas today. Sad.

I was thinking the same thing as I watched, and was going to post that but you've said it all and said it better than I could.

Rob Lawrence Russo you are dead on. I think he is the greatest skater I have ever seen. Today’s skaters with their arsenal of quads don’t come near to what he accomplished and seem right clumsy compared to his form and elegant style.

+Rob Lawrence. I totally agree with you. Skating is more about who can do a lot of quads and skating fast. I dont enjoy watching it anymore. I think artistry is as important as technical. John Curry revolutionized skating with his classical ballet type of skating. He was the complete skater. I think Paul Wylie and most of all Johnny Weir reminds me so much of the great John Curry, but John Curry was the best.

His elegance and artistry are unrivalled, even to this day. Take his spins - slow and oh so beautiful. Going full speed ahead doesn’t always equal grace and skill.

From 3:38 on, he is skating on pure feeling which cannot be taught. I do wish more skaters would take a leaf from his book - words defy me to describe what I see. And when is the last time you saw a back that straight on a sit spin? Beautiful, beautiful.
