The only thing I know about turtles and snakes that people love running them over for some reason. I go to work every day on the same 10mile road for years now, often at night and I always see roadkills, I saw quite a lot of times that people actually go to the oncoming lane just to run over a snake or a turtle. Why? I never hit anything.

So glad I found your channel. In Virginia as a child my brother and I had turtles as pets. Back in 2013 after a heavy rain I saw a small turtle on the road, stopped and picked him up. He had a shell like the bark of a tree and pointy little nose. He fit in the palm of my hand. My friend identified him as being an Alligator Snapping turtle we took him to the river area to let him loose. That's the last time I've seen any type of turtle. It seems that they were easier to find back in the 70s I'm always on the lookout for one and hope to find one. They are awesome.

Built my own habitat when I was a kid and had gathered 3 box, a striper, a painter, and at one point a small snapper. I remember coming home one day and seeing my habitat completely ransacked. Not like any animals got in... this my 3rd year of maintaining my outdoor turtle sanctuary but no.. no one can just mind their own business. Turns out the neighbors had a wild drunken party and climbed the fence to see what my habitat was. They took all my turtles.. even my first one I had for 10years and was my first pet (who escaped one time and we found him 3 years later about 4 or 5 miles away). Got him when I was 5yo from my godmother and I always loved turtles... lately we find out we have deep ties toward our Native side and our original ancestors revered them as well. Really miss my turtle.

I have them currently in an 80-gallon tank. The best advice I can give is keep the water warm, 70-75F, make sure it’s shallow enough and add some plants, either fake or live. It makes them feel more secure and they’ll come out more. Also make sure the basking light is bright and strong because they are avid baskers.

All tortoises are turtles but not all tortoises are turtles.
Tortoises are specifically land-dwelling year-round. They usually only go in water to cool off or drink.
Turtles are freshwater animals and spend alternating times in water or land.
Sea turtles are saltwater animals that only go on land to lay eggs.
Terrapins are sea turtles but in freshwater.
All of these are turtles, as that is the umbrella term, but each of these types of turtle are distinct from each other.
