My great-grandfather was a photographer and all his photos had a white border. Since I'm continuing the family legacy of photographers, I figured that it's what I have to do as well. Great decision. All my prints look amazing with the borders. It makes the shot more special.

Also, one of my film rolls had a defect where one side of the picture was ever so slightly burnt by light. It's hardly noticeable with the white borders because it just blends in. Without the borders, it would be clearly noticeable.

I am still torn apart when it comes to use or not use white borders when posting photos on Instagram.
And I still don't know how to calculate or determine border size.

idk i feel like photos w white in them look better w white border while photos like the ones you showed at the end are better without white borders

Interesting…I wonder if this might also be applicable to R. E. photos on MLS or Zillow…

That’s a good point, maybe it’ll help sales?? I wonder if anyone has any experience to share about that?

If I’m making an 8x12 photo should the border be included into the dimensions or should I add it on afterwards?

It doesn't really matter unless you are intending to put it into a fame. If you are then put the border within the dimensions, so that the print is actually 8x12, in total and then the whole thing can be put in the frame without having to cut to size. Hope that helps, cheers. Phil
