I played The Hay last year. I had a 9AM tee time, which is way earlier than the tee times for those staying at nearby hotels that use the hotel shuttles. I was able to play twice as it was that slow. The starter asked if I wanted a ball marker and I got two, with The Hay logo, for free. I have a Sunday bag so I played with a subset of my clubs. The hotel guests all brought their full sets and had to lay them on the ground and play with a few clubs. Imagine playing nine holes and you have to carry each club by hand, no bag😅. The putting green is epic. You can spend an hour just putting. Parking is a hassle. Don’t park in the parking lot where you check in. I parked on the frontage road adjacent to the parking lot. Again, this was last year and things may have changed. Was it worth it? Yes, I payed $65 and had a blast. 👍⛳️
What are your favorite golf courses you have played in Monterey let’s hear it (for those able to list Cypress/MPCC I'm jelly lol)! This is my list: 1 - Pebble Beach 2 - Spyglass Hill 3 - Poppy Hills GC 4 - Quail Lodge 5 - Bayonet 6 - Carmel Valley 7 - Monterey Pines 8 - Black Horse 9 - Spanish Bay 10 - Pacific Grove HM - Del Monte
Here’s a sob story, I lived in Monterey County for years and never swung a single golf club anywhere there the entire time. So many missed opportunities! 😢 Sidenote I am really starting to enjoy your channel, please keep up the good work! :)
Great video. I'm from Michigan, I have 8 golfers wanting to play some of the courses in Monterey. We plan on spending at least four day's in Monterey. Would the Dukes membership be the best value for us? We would like to play Pebble Beach if possible without staying at there resort.
I’m headed to Monterey and San Diego for work in 2 weeks. I’ve lined up Spyglass (played last year and loved it so much returning again) and Spanish Bay. I’m going to check out Dukes to see if it saves me money as a single because I’m usually in that area twice a year. Would love to play Pebble but like you I cant justify the extra couple hundred $$$ over the others.
Yeah for an entire group it's a no brainer and can even be worth it if you visit by yourself multiple times. Just make sure you call and confirm if you can schedule and book the free rounds immediately with a new membership once you get approved. I haven't had to do a completely fresh sign up so can't say with 100 percent certainty it all aligns perfectly but on paper it makes sense! Pebble is quite expensive not sure if I'm going back any time soon lol.
Mine would be: 1. Cypress Point 2. Pebble Beach 3. Monterey Peninsula CC-Shore Course 4. Poppy Hills 5. Spyglass Hill 6. Pacific Grove 7. Del Monte 8. Spanish Bay
I think that yellow house you referred to above the 17th hole at Quail Lodge belonged to Doris Day. As a peninsula resident, I think the Robert Trent Jones course at Laguna Seca deserves a higher rating than PG or Monterey Pines.
Laguna Seca from a course design perspective I agree is much better than PG/Monterey Pines. It's just last time I played it was in horrible shape. I'll have to give it another go I know they are putting in a lot of work into it!
Spanish bay availability is not too difficult to get on from my experience! However, it's a crap shoot for PB as you can only call the day before and hope for availability the next day.
Probably the nicest public practice facilities are at bayonet/black horse. Laguna Seca has a gold range as well as Pacific Grove. Monterey Pines has a range too.
Unfortunately no it has to be held by a single person. But the idea is to have one person sign up and split the cost if you're doing a big trip to Monterey because the one membership rate applies to an entire foursome (as long as the dukes member is a part of that group). So overall if you can play Spy/Spanish it pays for itself.
PG conditions are based on the fact it's city run... and we all know the quality of work we get from government workers making minimum wage to be a groundskeeper and the lack of budgeting in the supplies you need to for decent turf management
Played Del Monte and Poppy Hills this weekend. Both courses were incredible. Some of the best maintained public courses I’ve ever played.

Love the combo strategy to fit in as much golf as possible!

10 - Pacific Grove
HM - Del Monte
That's a solid lineup. I'd replace pg for crazy horse tho the front 9 at pg is dreadful
Monterey pines is value and well kept! 💯
100 percent!
Best value in the area, wonderfully maintained.
perfect timing, i'm planning a monterey trip for when my parents visit from the east coast! so hyped
Nice enjoy!
Played Poppy Hills in Oct 2021. Loved the course!
Poppy Hills is a good one!!!

That is sad indeed 😭 but hope you are able to go out there still! Thanks for watching 😎

Love the hat!
I like the list. I would agree but there are a few I have not played but they are on my list to play. Great pod.
We will go out there one day G!
Back nine at PG is so much fun (pro tip, do the early bird back nine).
Early back 9 Pacific Grove is THE WAY TO GO!

that hat is dope!
One of my favorites! Although I have too many hats 😂

Spy, pebble, Spanish, cvr, preserve, bayo, crazy horse... haven't played poppy or quail yet though.
The preserve you lucky dog 😎 heard it is a super hard track tho! Also crazy horse is such an underrated track!
Only played Pacific Grove but will definitely try your other top 10. How is it trying to get tee times in PB or Spanish bay?
Spanish bay availability is not too difficult to get on from my experience! However, it's a crap shoot for PB as you can only call the day before and hope for availability the next day.
Currently watching this podcast while on my way to Bethpage! Kinda making me wish I was at Monterey instead😭
Bethpage not a bad alternative to Monterey! Haha
Not at all lol, just not the water views, in fact not much water at all since there are only two holes out of all 5 courses that have water on them.
I’ve never played at Monterey, but I’m interested to know of any golf courses that has driving range.
Probably the nicest public practice facilities are at bayonet/black horse. Laguna Seca has a gold range as well as Pacific Grove. Monterey Pines has a range too.
Just an FYI - Pasatiempo is currently renovating and is closed until Fall/Winter 2023 😢
wahhhhhhhhhhhhhht
😧 was not aware good to know!
can you split a duke's membership?

Pacific Grove could be the worst course on the planet.
