Tell me more about the figure, the grain is so tight I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on, even looking at the end grain. Lovely stuff like
Do an all aussie build! I'm currently building with a king billy soundboard. According to some of the luthiers I've spoken to, it's the gold standard for aussie soundboards
@@TomSandsGuitars on a better note, my first acoustic was an all Tassie Blackwood dreadnaught and it is lovely. Getting AAA figured sets is cheaper than even walnut sets from America once shipping is taken into account
many boats were made from huon for many many years n cos the grain is very linear, its very strong n light. Its stored after cutting in dams n rivers with some over 200yrs old n still just as good as the day it was cut
I like these videos. I can't wait to see "end result" videos of these woods already made into guitars. Love hearing about "new" woods I never knew existed. Keep'em coming!
Thank you for this amazing video! It sounds like an intriguing wood! It has depth and a little bass in the wood when you tapped it. Hopefully you be able to use it as a topwood soon! Love from Singapore !
I think it'd be nice on a small bodied guitar paired with mahogany or koa. Pronounced woody midrange with a slight compression. A warm, articulate fingerstyle instrument. And you might be able to pare it a couple of thousandths thinner.
I wonder if because pines are sappy they would make good candidates for torrefaction... or some process involving the oils that would allow it to retain structural integrity at at thinner thickness?
As others have said, go for a topwood! If you want to hear how sweet Huon can be, have a listen to Waltz for Kim by David Ross Macdonald. It’s played on an OM sized body with a Huon soundboard and Jarrah b/s. Such a lovely tune and a beautiful sounding guitar.
Great story about the tree’s lineage... reproduction sloth style! Strange figuring alright. Soundboard - yes or no? Well... there is definitely some tonal quality there - there’s highs to lows present - perhaps not too much sustain but I vote yes for a soundboard!
You were lucky to get that! Timber felled with dubious paperwork (and then quickly exported) is the backbone of the guitar industry right? well, dont waste it on some junk
That whitebait figure is lovely; you should definitely try it as a soundboard it’s great

Given its hardness, I'll sand it down very thin as a topwood and pair it with your beautiful Tasmania Blackwood for a warm earthly sound
I like the sound of that!
do it @@TomSandsGuitars ! I've heard good things about Huom Pine soundboards - I have some for some point in the future
@@octoBadger let me know what you think!
Its been 2 years since this video, has your perception changed? Have you used it yet?
Unfortunately I haven’t had chance!
Love the intro music!!! Perfect for the great episode sure to follow! 🙂 Today's was fascinating!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Huon pine is lovely for sure I've got some for my next build. (Also I got a speeding ticket so no new guitar bits for me for a while :(( )

Loving the videos on wood types and dreaming of commissioning a guitar in The Tree! Keep up the great work.
Excited to hear what the pine sounds like on a finished guitar.
Tom, yes you are giving it a hard run. Been using it for a long time and it really is suburb.
is tomorrow's wood king billy pine??? guess i'll have to wait to find out ay
that was my guess too!
@@jon.parsons if it came from Tassie with the huon... can only really be KB i reckon. It's fantastic seeing Tom review some aussie timbers
@@EborallGuitars Yep. I'd like to see what he can do with some Radiata Pine 😂
@@jon.parsons haha... i reckon Tom could make a piece of plyboard sing...
It comes from Queensland...???
Beautiful!
And I love the Sabotage intro!
Hi, Tommy. One australian lutier said in his country has not mountains so high and cold for excellent soundboards like Europe and North América.
Yeah it’s the same situation here in the U.K.
I have an old grown 1/4 sawn sample that is gorgeous

I think it could work for a Model S for sure!
Sounds like a solid kick drum, I’d love to see it as a soundboard on a large guitar
the comments are heating up for it to become a soundboard!
Curious how you got on with the Huon pine? I have access to some and curious whether I should use it for a guitar or some furniture. Thanks

Thanks for the content. Any idea where I could source ringed gidgee back and sides. Can't seem to find it.
Curly Timbers on Instagram is the prime spot!
Try it as a soundboard, what have you got to lose? Could be a hidden gem! :D
you're right!
Nice metallic tap tone !
Thanks for listening
Thank you for all these informative videos Tom! Do you know if Austrian luthiers do use this wood for soundboards?
I build furniture in Huon. This figure is called “White Bait. Has many others including Burl.

I would like to win the keys for my guitar I am building.
aw im sorry! they've gone, keep watching for new giveaways!

Yeah? What back and sides would you go for?
@@TomSandsGuitars maybe mahogany
Looks suspiciously like 3/8ths ply woodinii.🤔lol
That’s what I thought Paul!
Australian tonewoods - You need to give king Billy pine a try. Good luck finding some though...
Someone very kindly sent me a set!
Go for a soundboard!!

To me, Huon smells like grated carrot.
specific! do you have to grate the huon?
@@TomSandsGuitars yes. I shape my necks with a grater 👌🏼
