It's very strange because a lot of people loved Ren and Stimpy, and yet, John hated those people despite being fans. For example, Robin Williams wanted to guest star in an episode and John told him to "f**k off." He also criticized Animaniacs without even watching the show itself.

    • @michaeldavis1879
      @michaeldavis1879 5 лет назад +466

Also, apparently the late Richard Williams, the animation director of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and director of "The Thief and the Cobbler" loved Ren and Stimpy and wanted to be a guest on the show. John K declined, and called him a f*g.

@Frizzurd Turns out I was wrong the first time around. I don't think RICHARD Williams ever asked to guest on "Ren and Stimpy", and that it was actually ROBIN Williams. I got the names confused. From what I've read, John didn't like Robin Williams, finding his comedy lifeless. That just boggles the mind!

I absolutely agree that cartoons should be more creator-driven. His opinion on cartoons in the 80s, he does have a point. But, him abusing those who worked for him. Just no. I will admit, he did have a shitty childhood, with him and his brother abused by his father, but that's no excuse for doing the same thing to those who worked for him. If I were him, I'd do anything to ensure that all people who worked for me were treated with respect.

The reason why the Fire Man randomly turns into a fat man in Fire Dogs 2, is because the fat man Fire Man variant in that episode was based on Ralph Bakshi, an underground cartoonist animator who was prolific in the late 1960's and 1970's. Ralph Bakshi was also John K's former boss. They worked together on the Mighty Mouse reboot from the 1980's. It was often told by both that they had a "Space Sprocket/George Jetson" chemistry where Ralph would hire/fire John. The things you see the Fire Man do in Fire Dogs 2 is based on things Ralph allegedly did in real life, so Fire Dogs 2 is like an in-joke, that most audiences were not aware of.

    • @destroyernoah
      @destroyernoah 4 года назад +2

Mighty Mouse got very in-jokey at the end. Almost every episode had a reference to Ralph in there. Once or twice he was inspiration for the episode's villain design.
Sometimes they'd have episodes that were most likely cutting costs, like Scappy the orphan sneaking into a theater and ruining old Terrytoons filmstrips and him commenting over the old 50s footage. One of them was Scrappy remembering past events, which were a lot of scenes from older episodes. Except the dialogue in the clips were sometimes dubbed with some jewish voice that was often out of sync? I'll never get it. I'm sure they found it hilarious.
Mighty Mouse was a clever show. The best episode was where they ripped on Alvin and the Chipmunks for 11 minutes. Although look up the "Twitch and Writhe" clip and just by looking at those (probably) teen girls, you can tell John drew it. It was obvious from the beginning. I'm not sure how no one noticed.

I remember him complaining in the Beach Party Frenzy opening that he was rarely allowed to draw "sexy girls" for the cartoons, and only got some to slip through or something like that.
Which means he was implying that all those sexualised teen girls were hot in his eyes.
He might as well have worn a button saying "I'M INTO HEBEPHILIA" because he sucked at hiding it.

The main problem with John K is when he is in charge he doesn't show up to work. His artistic vision isn't what delayed the staff, it was because he was never there to tell them what to do and they couldn't start until he came back because he always made them redo everything. Even during the Adult Party Cartoon there would be days where he just didn't show up and they had to meet a deadline and so they just made the show without him.
He would rather just rant online about how bad everyone is instead of actually working. He was hired twice to make R&S and failed both times.

Adult Party Cartoon suffered from the same thing most "adult" cartoon shows do in that it throws literally everything gross and offensive at the viewer in lieu of actual entertainment. That's why people love the original more, because it wasn't hyper-focused on trying to be "adult". Lots of the most well-loved jokes from the series---Mr. Horse's paranoid rant followed by the walrus whispering "Call the pol-eeeeeeese" in Rubber Nipple Salesmen for example---had zero gross-out humor or anything offensive, it was all in the voice-acting delivery and animation.

  • @Naruto_from_the_Naruto_show

Ren and Stimpy Adult Party truly is awful. I watched the entire run of Ren and Stimpy from the Nickelodeon days a few years back. It was hysterical, the delivery, the comedy, the timing everything, as a product it was great, as an employee it must've been heel.
So I was excited when I found out there was a "sequel", adult party show (time? Jamboree? Hour?) And watched the first episode. It was also the last one.
When the show was on Nickelodeon there was an edge to the show, something pushing the boundaries of what is permited "technically" and pass through the censors. It was unlike anything before, as you said it, the nipple episode for instance. So when you have a boundary stopping you and you push it, it feels special, like what you're watching is wrong. It's fun.
Now when you have total freedom to do whatever, there's no boundary, there's no limit, you can do whatever, so there's no pushing anything, "yeah of course you can watch this, you're an adult, we trust you to be okay with watching this" so what's left with the show? Gross humor, shocking humor, sex humor, but if there's no substance to it, it just feels pointless, like a kid in high school who says the N word to shock people, pointless and immature.
Not that Ren And Stimpy back in Nick was mature, had poignant commentary or something like it, but it knew what could be funny with little, knew its audience and played with that. Whenever I watch a Ren and Stimpy episode now, I feel like a kid again, watching it during the night and kinda hiding it from my parents, it makes me feel like that gross weird childish humor from when I was young, an immature show for immature kids, and it made me feel like an immature kid again.
Adult Party Shenanigans doesn't, it makes me feel like an adult watching a childish show aimed at adults with nothing to show but crudeness.
That's why the original will forever remain a classic and the other one forgotten.

I know this is a 2 year old video but here is my story about the Adult Party stuff. To preface, I was born in 1994. Back when I was like 9 years old (I have a bad memory but I believe it was then) my mom had met my step dad. Now, I already had a previous step dad (don’t worry, I still stayed with my real dad too) but my previous step dad was… let’s just say: not that great. But I was a young kid and I was just happy to see my mom happy. But I didn’t know how this new person in my mom’s life would be like for her, and especially for me. But the one thing that made me bond with my step dad almost immediately was ren and stimpy. I had always watched reruns on tv but never got to see a bunch of new episodes, I really only watched a handful that I could catch here and there. But he had the dvds for like the first 2 seasons I believe. We watched the whole set all in one go, laughing our faces off. Quoting the show constantly. And that is my first and favorite memory of my step dad. But when adult party stuff came out, we were excited to see new ren and stimpy stuff! Granted I was like 15 or 16 now when we finally got a dvd and watched it and…. Boy… did we just not have a happy happy joy joy time. It felt so weird to watch and everything. We still have the dvd but we shutter at the thought of it.

Hey LS Mark; do you know just WHO the fire chief turned into in the episode "Fire Dogs 2"? That "different character" is, as Part 2 of the episode says, "Ralph Bakshi, the world's greatest cartoonist!" The episode wasn't making fun of fat people at all; creator John K used to work Ralph Bakshi on Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, and Bakshi saved John K.'s career in animation at the time. In point of fact, that Mighty Mouse reboot was what really started the cartoonist-driven renaissance of the '90s-even more so than Ren & Stimpy, which people often think is what started that animation renaissance in the first place. Before Ren & Stimpy and after Mighty Mouse (Bakshi), John K & Sody Clampett also did a reboot of Beany & Cecil which included top talent like Dan Haskett and Michael Lah! Anyway, Ralph Bakshi is the ground-breaking animation guy behind The Lord of the Rings (1978), Cool World (1992), Fire and Ice (1983), Wizards (1977), and Malcolm and Melvin (Cartoon Network pilot). As an animation reviewer, you should at least know about Ralph Bakshi, and you might like looking into his stuff.

I think the problem people had with adult party cartoon was mainly Ren seeks help. Don't get me wrong. There is plenty of mean spirited gross cartoons but majority of them are edgy for he sake of being edgy. They also usually look like shit. Here you have a whole episode focusing on gross abuse that is well animated and seems like the abuse is fetishized. The quality and intent matters when it comes to presenting themes. and good quality with disturbing intent can gross people out more than any amount of puke or blood.

Ren & Stimpy was such lightning in a bottle. Like The Beatles, I think John's team just fed off one another, and all were excited. Yet, I think John was torn between acting like his mentor Ralph Bakshi, and being a smooth hipster. Bakshi, as crazy as he was - had a vision for his end products. Gruff New Yorker, yes. But I think really cared for those that delivered and made his visions come true. John I think became more the "Steve Jobs" - give it style, promise, and cram it down peoples throats. Whereas Ren & Stimpy was more "Give it something, and let's see what happens?". He kinda started that way with The Ripping Friends as well. But again, had no real vision for the "end product". It's too bad, as John K. is truly a creative madman. But to survive on that reputation alone...?

I think the reason the Adult Party version of the show was hated rather then just seen as "Meh" is kind of the same reason that a good chunk of sonic fans find a lot of modern games awful despite them being pretty "okay" games. They keep enough core components around to make them very very recognizable. Characters, themes, a familiar setting ect. can ring a lot in nostalgia. So when people hear that a new Ren and Stimpy show is coming out people already have expectations for it, for better or worse. Like a lot of people say, its not that grossout was new to the show, it was just done in an extreme way since there wasn't as much pushback from the people they were working for given it was an adult show. So even though the IDEAS were similar in style the way its done can sit differently with people. (Like i find the creepy closeups of spongebob to be super funny while the "Squidward stubs his toenail" is fucking gross). stuff like that can be relevant to shows like this as well. even if it "Seems" to be almost the same thing the vibe of the grossout changes or in the case of the frog episode the dark tones can sit different as well even if the first show also has dark tones.
Like in modern games sonic still runs fast and destroys robots but it wouldn't be hard to argue that Sonic 1 has a different vibe then Sonic Lost Worlds (besides the shift from 2D to 3D). you can also point out changes like this in other things that happen to last a long time or get rebooted. BUT there are series that happen to do this in good ways, sonic was just a good example of a series that i like the older stuff more but don't any longer due to story and gameplay changes. It also happens to bother me more because ive played the games forever and i want them to be something i like (but thats another rant)
Though this is just all my opinion i'm sure people hate it for different reasons then this but that's just something i've noticed. This is just one way something can be almost like the old thing but also not really.

a kids cartoon with a. adult variant or age rating rise is weird

Actually, to explain that Fire Dogs episode in APC, John apparently wanted to get a guest appearance from the guy he used to work for - the father of pure adult animation himself, Ralph Bakshi. He just exaggerated his body type GREATLY. Which, by the way, Bakshi's films are actually fantastic to watch. Low budget, sure, but still some great experiences.

My problem with the show is how it takes the magic out of the original. The original pushed standards on what could air. It had a filter. With adult party cartoon, they can do whatever they want. Without it pushing standards and just being an adult cartoon, is it really Ren and Stimpy?

Luke Jarrett No it really isn’t without The charm it wouldn’t really be ren and stimpy

I really dislike when something is forced to be a rating like it has to have swearwords and gross out because its adult, Its why I liked ren and simpy and my favorite show of all time regular show because as a kid you can enjoy it but also as an adult you can get more and still enjoy it

The leaks for the new Ren and Stimpy reboot are online. From what I have seen it seems they are trying to be true to the spirit and style of the original series but also make a little updated. Its hard not to think of John K when watching but maybe it can go beyond the creator and be a fun take on the characters. Maybe the need comeback for a new generation

The original voice for stimpy REFUSED to voice in these adult cartoons for being too cruel

I hate it when people say all the show is is "pointless gross-out" when there's only a decent amount. There's also too much hate for the Games era which is still amazing

I always thought the "I'll show you how to pull a man's zipper down" joke was really out of place for Ren.

The *only* episode of Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon" that I've seen is "Fire Dogs 2". I don't plan on changing that anytime soon!
