I thought it was the whole park for a second and almost had a heart attack

Some of these features appear to be high maintenance that may not age well. Why not improvements that emphasize nature rather than artificiality?

They dont care about spending tax payer money on upkeep

I find it interesting that the northern end of the park is being improved now that the Harlem neighborhood that borders it has been gentrified.

geographically, the North end of the park is less visited as visitors do not go that far up.... I hear what you are saying but let's not be so cynical. Let's be thankful that park is being updated. ( if you look at the pictures it was well used for a long time by locals).

This renovation has nothing to do with gentrification, the pool is just 1 of dozens of attractions in the northern end of the park. The north end of the park is absolutely gorgeous: Conservatory Gardens is insane. The Harlem Meer is gorgeous with a boathouse and fishing. There are amazing playgrounds and ballfields. The old pool was not some eyesore, it was an absolutely monster sized one-of-a-kind pool, a crown jewel constructed 75 years ago. It was insanely popular and crowded. The pool house and locker situation was outdated by today's standards and I'm optimistic the new renovation will be nice.

idek, Central Park was extended to north to Harlem, but i do remember the train station in Harlem called "Central Park North 110th"

I live in the neighborhood (114) and yes there is some gentrification, but half of this section is NYCHA housing + a lot of low income housing. This plan will greatly benefit people of all financial backgrounds. If anything, Harlem gentrification is further west and further North. I mean Whole Foods + Trader Joes + Target (gentrification icons) are all on 125th, 15 streets North of here. As a regular commuter through the park (bike/walk), I cannot wait for this dream to be realized.

By the way, "Meer" is the Dutch word for "lake". And, of course, Harlem comes from the Dutch city of Haarlem. So, basically, Haarlemmermeer...

I love how the overt racism against the previous Harlem residents is never talked about......so the redo is being done now that the original residents have been priced out....smdh :(

It will get done. NYC can always find rich donors to get things done. Manhattan can always find money for things that are valued and Central Park is the crown jewel of their parks system.

Replacing a modernist intervention with another modernist intervention. Sad they didn’t create something in the style of the original park.

Separation. Kept the park safe. Made the surrounding areas wealthy.
Just look at Chicago. Run to the ground and educated people are leaving
Same is happening in California and so on. 😢
