Appreciate the speaker's discussion from an academic and historian point of understanding. That's his domain and he shouldn't be asked about surahs that don't touch on historical or social issues. Very interesting podcast and great to learn some insights from a non Muslim academic's secular perspective. Thank you.
What an exchange of intelligent thoughts Derek is as I informed as the professor. Thanks Derek for presenting such an intellectual discussion and bringing Prof Johnston on board. We all learned a lot from it.
The Qur'an can be kind of difficult to understand and interpret, because it's like a collection of replies to questions/situations and polemics. So for example, the verse about "God is wherever you turn" is a response to the pagan argument that "These people don't even know where the right way to turn is in their religion". But you wouldn't know that unless you read the seerah (biography of Muhammed) in parallel and have notes where it says "and in this moment, this and this verse was revealed". So reading the Qur'an alone is like all the answers without the questions and circumstances surrounding them.
Exactly, the Quran itself apart from been the criterion it's a whole seera which was used to answer or refer to the prophet pertaining questions and happenings in his lifetime.
Quran is a stand alone document of oral transmission. The author directly talks to the reader. It also refers to past events based on the much later learnt principle of 'history repeats itself'. That is, it reminds the reader that previous civilizations got destroyed because of crossing certain limits and if we do the same, we will meet the same fate. It also refers to the prophet at times and refers to the future at times. But it is a continuous dialogue which has a unique style of its own. Its neither poetry nor prose. Most of the dialogue is pretty straightforward. However, there are some difficult verses and it acknowledges that they are difficult and foretells that some people will leave the straightforward ones and will only go after the difficult ones and bring about various interpretations. Nevertheless, Quran is for all the times and the events or examples it quotes from one population are generalizable to another similar population. It is misleading to assume that Quran came to be in response to questions of the people of a particular time. Although, there is a body of scholars who just hold that assumption.
@@waseemsstudy9140 No, what is misleading is to say that it's not. Another example, let's assume that God speaks to me or about me specifically here: [20:105-107] They ask you about the mountains. Say, "My Lord will wipe them out. He will leave them like a barren, flat land. Not even the slightest hill will you see therein, nor a dip." I never asked about "the mountains". I've never heard anyone ask me "what about the mountains?". Nobody has any problems with the mountains. So what is he talking about from *my* perspective? And if you'll say "it's somebody else asked something and he replied", well then it's a reply to somebody asking something, but that somebody is not me, and his answer isn't relevant to me, and you'd have to conclude that God is babbling. More examples, I'll assume that God is talking to me directly: [54:1] The Hour has come closer, and the moon has split. But I see the moon in the sky, it hasn't split. [54:2] Then they saw a miracle; but they turned away and said, "Old magic." What miracle? Who turned away? [54:3] They disbelieved, followed their opinions, and adhered to their old traditions. Who did? [54:4] Sufficient warnings have been delivered to alert them. Which warnings? Delivered to whom? There was no verse before 54:1 except for "In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful", which doesn't help understanding what he's talking about here. The Quran is very dependent upon its context. That's what the entire polemics was about in the past two decades, where people cited it out of context and said that it justifies horrible things in the present.
@@tzimisce1753 My apologies for not being clear. My own approach to reading Quran is to let it say what it has to say without any prejudice or assumptions. what I meant by the author of Quran directly talking to the reader was in collective sense that is talking to the species who could read or listen. Thus, Quran talks at a general level rather than a personal level. Many of the issues discussed at general level can be extrapolated to individual personal level. And many are not to be applied at an individual level. For example, if an instruction is at a community level Quran addresses 'you' in plural form rather than 'you' in singular form. Often that distinction is lost in translation as in English there is no plural or singular form of you. As for your example of personal one on one discourse with the author of Quran, I am citing 2:118 from Pickthall's translation. And those who have no knowledge say: Why doth not Allah speak unto us, or some sign come unto us? Even thus, as they now speak, spake those (who were) before them. Their hearts are all alike. We have made clear the revelations for people who are sure. (118) Now in verse 118 Quran is talking in general terms about people's objections and says it has already outlined detailed signs in the book for such people. So as far as I have understood it, and I don't claim any expertise, the objective of the Quran is to guide people. It deliberately avoids specific details of time and space and keep it simple and generalizable. When I come across such verses, I ask myself what's in it for me rather than asking when was it said, who was it said to, what was going on at that time, etc. I do read about these details in the commentaries just for interest but personally I don't dwell on them. All the best!
Very insightful and it is a parallel with the Letters of Paul in the New Testament that he is replied to churches, specifically and in context yet people transformed it into literal reading to their circumstances. We later understand that the Scriptures are not religious books but rather books of wisdom that we must have the desire to understand and therefore explore as opposed to using them with the purpose of winning debates.
When young boy, Muhammad worked as a shepherd to help pay his keep (his uncle was of modest means). In his teens he sometimes traveled with Abu Talib, who was a merchant, accompanying caravans to trade centers. On at least one occasion, he is said to have traveled as far north as Syria.

@@davids.8509 You are absolutely right. the Quran actually doesn’t support what is happening during the pilgrimage. It actually are from bukhari books which are unverifiable “according to” narrations which were written hundreds and hundreds years after the messenger Muhammed passed away. Basically the majority of Muslims today have broken off into sects bc of these questionable books being paired with The Holy Book. Once I started studying the Scripture in order to verify everything that is being done or to be done , I realized almost everything in the Muslim world is not supported by the Quran. We are to worship and turn to the One and Only Guardian Lord Who created the Heavens and the Earth. The myth of intercession is a lie. In every one of the Abrahamic peoples. The punishment is coming to us unless we turn back to One God and follow the Guidance which He has sent down to us as a mercy. The Lord Almighty, the Most Forgiving and Merciful guides whom He wills. His punishment is severe for the ones who turn away. See the Signs happening in YT channels. World of Signs is one. Peace

Derek, that was a brilliant episode. Dr Howard Johnson is an absolute charmer and his ideas behind the change of direction between Jerusalem and Mecca was fascinating, plenty of food for thought. Bring him back I want to hear about Gog and Magog, that sounds like a superhero story!
"Indeed We have created man, and We know whatever thoughts his inner self develops, and We are closer to him than (his) jugular vein" (Surah 50:16). This verse from Quran clearly tells us concept of GOD is not extreme remote in Islam as the Professor tried to point out several times.
I think what his meaning is this idea of an interventionist idea of GOD, This idea that God takes exacting action on human lives. Away from this idea of for example of Greek or Roman gods that personally effect human lives. I am more of the belief that yes Allah created the universe but Allah is all powerful but doesn't literally cause everything to occur. All occurrence is source to Him but not in the way we imagined a potter shapes and mould clay into a vase for example.
Regarding the year of elephant, the question is: how were the elephants watered in the Arabian desert? I am told an elephant drinks 300 liters of water daily. An auxiliary question would be about the tons of vegetation needed to feed them daily. There is no such resource available in Mecca region for hundreds of miles.
@@SomeMan001 plus, Mecca is not in desert, it is in Hijaz, there is campaigns recorded for elephants in Najd which is another plateau falling between Hijaz and desert with much less water
Because the story is made up. The Quranic verse about the "master of the elephant" provides no details. The verse in fact seems to be asking the believer to remember the Maccabees. There is no Islamic history in Mecca dating back earlier than the 8th century. Mecca is barren. Incapable of sustaining life without infrastructure.

Well done professor. Yes, *the 3 first battles in the history of Islam were initiated by..the Meccan pagans* . And yet Muhammad amnestied them when he came back victorious to Mecca.
You mean ignorance? Agreed. It's easier to dismiss all the work you have to do to source the truth and blindly follow what feels good and convenient to you.
Belief? Do you mean faith? Yeah, these are in no way a reliable means to arrive at truth. Any assertion can be believed - if belief were reliable Hinduism would also be true. You are being very silly.
An important aspect that Dr. Johnston needs to consider with regard to the issue of prophet Muhammad peace be upon him writing the Quran is the fact that the Quran style, content, and other linguistic attributes are completely different than what the Arabs used to write at that time or before. None of the Arabic writings is anywhere like the Quran. It was completely alien to the Arabs themselves. So, it does not make sense to even suggest that Muhammad peace be upon him may have written the Quran. How could he when he is the product of the same culture and society he was raised in and then suddenly at the age of 40 began producing material that is completely alien to anything written by the soceity he was born into at that time or even before his time? Many experts concluded that he couldn’t have written the Quran. So, WHO DID WRITE THE QURAN? Muslims say the CREATOR is the author of the QURAN. ALLAH
That's right. If we also compare the linguistic style of the Hadith (words of the Prophet Muhammad SAW) and Quran they're too far different to come from the same man. Prophet Muhammad SAW was also illiterate, and didn't have any relations to Judaism and Christianity, thus he couldn't have gotten information from the other two religions.
@@raxxxdi Illiterate doesn't mean, you don't have informations about a lot of things that exist in the theological and philosophical tradition around you. Maybe Mohammad was quite a knowledgeable man...
@@neatwheat That's where you are wrong. Muhammad PBUH didn't grow up in areas where there are many Christians or Jews at all, he lived in the heart of Paganism in Mecca his whole life. There's precisely only one Christian living in that place and he is not related to Muhammad PBUH until later on in his life when he seeks out opinion for his spiritual experience in a cave. A poor orphaned young boy from birth, his mother died before he reached the age of 6, his grandfather also died shortly after that, and it was his uncle who raised him. He spent his time as a shepherd for his uncle and neighbors. His only experience of going outside the city growing up was the one time his uncle took him to Syam (current time Syiria, Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon) but before he even entered the place a Priest saw him and noticed the signs of Prophethood in the young boy so the Priest told his uncle to go back with the boy incase the other Priests or Jews Rabbis will try to kill him (because they would hate it that the final Prophet wasn't born from the Children of Israel). The life of Muhammad PBUH before prophethood and after (23 years of his mission) is documented by many first-hand accounts and can be scrutinized if you wish to do that as well. You'll see there's no way he was the one who came up with the Quran. It's not normal for a human being to be able to keep lying for 23 years while making one comprehensive book, with no contradictions, errors, completely different orders than it was compiled (meaning a chapter of the Quran can be revealed from the last verses first, while the other chapters are also in progress, before it completion) and on top of that he wasn't able to write it down to keep up with the progress. So yes, it's not humanly possible.
@@raxxxdi But what if people there knew more than we give them credit for? Which kind of pagans were there anyway? Were there even still polytheistic people then?
Ok, just checked it: Yes, there were. But he was sent to Syria at age 12 or 13, right? And there lived monotheistic semitic tribes. Gotta have picked up something there. And his uncle who took care of him for a while was the leader of an influential clan who gotta have had some education as an "upper class member" member of his clan. And Muhammad obviously worked as a travelling merchant for 20 years before he had the revelation in that cave in Mecca...
Correction. Hajj is not a pagan ritual, it was first made by Abraham and Prophet Muhammad PbuH was ordered by Allah to perform the Pilgrimage of Abraham. Allah simply means in Arabic The God, or The One True God. Prophet Muhammad PbuH is a direct descendant of Ismael. Kaaba was built by Ismael and his father Abraham, who was then ordered by Allah to establish Pilgrimage and call people to warship the one true God, Allah. The Arabs still kind of remembered Allah during the Prophet's time, they knew of Him, but over many many centuries being left without a revelation and guidance, they lost touch with their religion and began to worship idols. If asked, they would claim they still believed in Allah, but needed the idols to intercede for them. They even still performed the ambulation of the Kaaba and animal sacrifice, done in memory of Abraham when he was ordered by Allah to sacrifice his son Ismael. But by Prophet Muhammad's time, Kaaba was surrounded by 360 idols and Mecca elites treated the Pilgrimage as business event, rather than a spiritual one. They were oppressive to less fortunate in their society and were involved in all kinds debauchery and tribal in-fighting. And please, don't regurgitate the Islamophobic rhetoric about satanic verses. Islamophobia is as old as Islam and don't think those were not invented way back then to tarnish the Prophet's image, just as they're doing today. But Mash Allah, Islam is still steaming ahead despite all the evilness done against them all around the world ever since it's inception.

@@tacom0nsta658 hello scholarly muslim. written arabic was incomplete during the time of muhammad so it would have impossible to understand just by reading the written version. it would take another two centuries before the necessary diacritical marks were in wide use. that makes the claim of quran being god's eternal testament that resides in heaven to be poetical exaggeration and factually wrong. otherwise god would have told muhammad to correct written arabic immediately to make it possible for believers to understand quran without outside help from people who already memorized the recitations first so they know what the words are supposed to be. that is why modern scholars find quran full of nonsense that needs explanation like muhammad stealing from syriac sources.
As for an English translation, multiple versions are available on the internet which are easier to search than printed copies. Given the contradictions in the Quran, and the doctrine of abrogation, it is important to read it in chronological sequence, with the later verses first. There is an edition by Tommy Robinson and Peter McLougnlan in the standard chronological order, but which also discusses the difficulty of reconstructing it.

In a dialogue about religious beliefs, it is important to recognize that people hold diverse perspectives and interpretations based on their cultural, religious, and personal backgrounds. It is necessary to consider that no specific source or authority is the ultimate truth, as truth can be subjective and personal within the context of faith. Engaging in a respectful dialogue means being open to different perspectives, valuing mutual understanding, and seeking common ground. It is not about enforcing one viewpoint over another but about fostering understanding and empathy. as Muslim and an Arab (deeply infected by the contagious religion Islam as James Howard-Johnston called it) I am open to hear all viewpoint and interpretations as long as presented in a respectful way and context and maybe give the Islamic interpretation of some points. I have noticed an unfortunate trend among certain scholars and RUclipsrs who tend to dismiss Islamic writings by asserting that they are biased. It is important to emphasize the significance of relying on credible external sources. However, I cannot help but question whether these external sources are entirely impartial when it comes to their own religious beliefs and perspectives. Making sweeping generalizations that Muslims are inherently biased while non-Muslims are unbiased is an oversimplification and can be seen as an exclamation rather than an accurate reflection of reality. Bias can exist within individuals of any religious or non-religious background. It is crucial to approach scholarly research with a critical mindset, evaluating sources based on their credibility, methodology, and their ability to provide a balanced presentation of various viewpoints at the end thank you all for reading my comment to this point
Even the Quran is a Hadeith! No ARCHEOLOGY or historical evidence from before the 7th century exists. There is NO proof that a real man named Mohammed ever lived in history like there is for outside sources. Many non-Christians wrote about Jesus during the first century. Not one ancient document had witnesses and documentation closer to actual events than the NT of the Bible. Not one.

I have a lot to comment here, but since I see many already replied on some of the points I wanted to address, I will just add two things: First, the name of God “Allah” is not one of the three gods worshipped by pagans Arabs, I think he got it mixed up with Alat as in Hubal, Alat and Al-Uzza. But, they were aware of the name Allah is the supreme God above the mini gods which they were like the connection links between them and the supreme God and the actors on his behalf. Second, the Hudaibyah treaty was if someone reverted to Islam from Makkah and fled to Maddinah, is to be given back to Makkah where if someone wanted to leave Islam, can return safely to Makkah

Derek Mythvision you need to read the short bio by Michael Hart when he placed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the first place of Greatest Humans.
Few Notes: 1. Prophet Abraham had built the Ka’aba with his son Ishmael. The children of Ishmael continued to worship One true God until the time of Amr b. Luhayy b. Qam’a b. Khindiff who was the first to start the worshipping of idols. About him Prophet Muhammad once said, “I saw Amr b. Luhayy dragging his intestines in hell, and when I asked him about those who lived between his time and mine he said that they had perished…He was the first to change the religion of Ishmael, to set up idols, and institute the custom of the bahira, sa’iba, wasila, and hami.” 2. According to Ibn Ishaq, the ancient historian, “the beginning of stone worship among the sons of Ishmael was when Mecca became too small for them and they wanted more room in the country. Everyone who left the town took with him a stone from the sacred area to do honor to it. Wherever they settled, they set it up and walked round it as they went round Ka’aba. This led them to worship what stones they pleased and those which made an impression on them. Thus as generations passed they forgot their primitive faith and adopted another religion for that of Abraham and Ishmael. They worshipped idols and adopted the same errors as the peoples before them” (Seerah by Ibn Ishaq). 3. Even Western scholars who are hostile to Islam argue the point that monotheism was native to Arabia. H.A.R Gibb in his book ‘Muhammedanism’ argues that “The existence of a supreme God, Allah, is assumed as an axiom common to Muhammad and his opponents. The Koran never argues the point; what it does argue is that He is the one and only one. La ilaha illa’aalah, ‘there is no god but Allah. But it is more doubtful whether this is to be regarded as the direct deposit of Christian or Jewish teaching. In the Koran it is connected with a different tradition altogether, an obscure Arabian tradition represented by the so-called ‘hanifs’, pre-Islamic monotheists whose very name shows that the Syrians regarded them as non-Christians (Syriac “hanpa”, ‘heathen’). Muhammad glories in the name and attaches it as a distinctive epithet to Abraham, “who was neither Jew nor Christian.”
This is the final revelation free from prejudiction and mythology. It talks about the cosmology. Like 7 parrallal universes, dark matter, black holes. Birth of feast process.
With regards to the sacrifices made during haj, these were not originally pagan rituals. They are linked to Abraham's story when Allah ordered him, in his old age, to sacrifice his only son as a test to his faith (Ishmael was the sacrifice as Isac hadn't been born yet) and when he was just about to carry out the order, Allah provided a ram to be sacrificed instead of Ishmael and because he passed the test Allah blessed him with a second son (Isac) . This became part of the ritual of haj which started at the time of Abraham and the Arabs afterwards, who are descendants of Ishmael and followed Abraham and Ishmael's faith, continued this ritual of sacrifice during haj and later on as they drifted away from the true faith into paganism, introduced some other activities to the haj which were not ordained by Allah. When prophet Mahammed PBUH came, he taught the believers how to perform haj the correct way and eliminated innovations that were not ordained by Allah and kept those acts that were actually part of the original haj as performed by Abraham.
There was no accommodations to the pagans of Mecca about the rights of the pilgrimage. The Kaaba was the first house of worship built by Abraham and his son Ishmael. It was dedicated to the worship of the one God. 3:96 The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at Bakka: Full of blessing and of guidance for all kinds of beings 3:97 In it are Signs Manifest; (for example), the Station of Abraham; whoever enters it attains security; Pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah,- those who can afford the journey; but if any deny faith, Allah stands not in need of any of His creatures. Over time that place became a den of paganism. When the Muslims took over Mecca they rededicated it again and returned to its original purpose. I don’t see in that any pagan accommodations.
A place called Bacca is also mentioned in psalm 84 of the Bible. It is referring to a “House of worship” where people made Pilgrimage and even mentions a “well”
Bacca is actually the old name of Mecca { إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَیۡتࣲ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِی بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكࣰا وَهُدࣰى لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ } [Surah Āli-ʿImrān: 96] The first House [of worship] to be established for people was the one at ( بكة - Bakkah ) Mecca. It is a blessed place; a source of guidance for all people;

There is no faith has got the concept of the God so right except Islam. Just as the universe is mind-blowing to mankind, the concept of God in Islam is mind-blowing.
Hey Derek, I hope you’re well. Thanks a lot for the discussion between you and Mr. Howard-Johnston. The conversation brought a few things to mind. 11 minutes in, Dr. James says something quite profound. “It’s hard to conceive that people would tamper fundamentally with the extraordinary story of the Prophet’s life. Given that he was their Prophet, that their faith was based upon the words he uttered and which they viewed as coming from God the Lone Supperme all inspiring God.” The key word here… uttered. And I don’t recall David (3s) being a shepherd, but he was a Prophet of God according to the Bible [Acts 2:30]. Wouldn’t that kill Sean Anthony’s whole premise? I found it quite sincere of you to state your belief on the likelihood of Muhammad’s words being pretty much preserved. Perks of talking to academics. Mr. Howard-Johnston made an unusual and unwarranted claim about the qibla being changed after the treaty, which seems false due to multiple reasons. Selective reading into the sira isn’t going to help anyone's case. The treaty was done when the Muslims were trying to make the pilgrimage, which logically means it was already a qibla by then. Additionally, it is important to know why the Qibla was facing Jerusalem, to begin with. It seems like Mr. Howard-Johnston is coming from a Christian mindset where he thinks that Muhammad is trying to impress the Christians and the Jews, while not considering the Quran constantly admonishing them. So how does that work? He even said it when he was talking about Surah 2. Quite bizarre. These Arabs were coming out of paganism and they needed to get used to praying to the unseen. The concept of the unseen is very important in Islam and these people needed to get used to it. So for over a decade, they prayed facing Jerusalem which was unseen, and then when they went to Medina, it changed to Mecca, making it also unseen. It’s literally that simple. Plus the treaty didn’t help any of the Quraish elite. They all died with the exception of two or three. So again, not sure where he’s getting this from. He also conveniently forgot to mention the part of the treaty where it says “Whoever flees to Muhammad from Mecca without the permission of his guardians will be sent back to the Quraysh, but whoever comes to the Quraysh from the Muslims will not be sent back to the Muslims” This is key because it falsifies a major part of his hypothesis. Plus it also seems like Mr. Howard-Johnston misunderstands the theology of the pre-Islamic Arabs. They believed in Allah but used these idols as intermediaries to the Creator. It is quite clear if the premise is wrong, anything added to it will most likely be wrong. In conclusion, I appreciate you giving your audience a chance to hear more about Islam and I’m sure these types of videos move people to read the Quran. So as a viewer and a believer, I thank you for that. I hope to see some of those personalities I’ve mentioned to you before. Have a great morning Derek and peace be with you.
But don't you duck the reason for the change of Kibla? Are you happy with it simply being a 'test'? If the 'Unseen' is originally Jerusalem, and Mecca is still 'Unseen' (but much less 'unseen' to Meccans?), why change from a very much 'Unseen' far-away Jerusalem to a much less 'Unseen' Mecca? Notwithstanding Jerusalem is clearly the Holy City for many Arabs pre-Islam. The paradox of Islam is trying to rationalize the urge to power in the world of Dunya, as opposed to a wholly spiritual or abstract, or 'Unseen' sense of truth? Ie you have to make political compromizes if you attempt to obtain temporal power ? The change of Qibla to Mecca makes a lot of sense in this respect. Render unto Caesar what is Caesars, Render unto God what is Gods, if we discuss 'spirituality' ? If you try and mix the two, it all get a bit murky doesn't it?
@@petergrimshaw492 [ But don't you duck the reason for the change of Kibla? ] Actually it makes a lot of sense because the Israelites periodically were promised that land (and occupied it briefly) after their Hijrah from Egypt. So it became their Qibla after they spread out into other lands following the destruction of the Second Temple. So for Muhammad, the Gentile Prophet, to be revealed by God that the Qibla is change to Mecca following the early Muslim's Hijrah (mirroring the Israelites), it makes full theological sense and is quite a meaningful event. [ If the 'Unseen' is originally Jerusalem, and Mecca is still 'Unseen' (but much less 'unseen' to Meccans?), why change from a very much 'Unseen' far-away Jerusalem to a much less 'Unseen' Mecca? ] Palestine was "unseen" when the Israelites were in Egypt. Does the argument work both ways? [ The paradox of Islam is trying to rationalize the urge to power in the world of Dunya, as opposed to a wholly spiritual or abstract, or 'Unseen' sense of truth? ] There is no paradox when it is in perfect continuity with Moses and the the rest of the Prophets who all held the same thing. There is no "spiritual vs worldly" dichotomy in the "Old Testament". God has full authority over this world and the next. That is why God revealed the Torah, not to be taken as metaphor but to build empires on. The Jews failed, the Christians failed, whereas the Muslims outlasted the Christians (namely Catholics). [ Render unto God what is Gods ] God's is all of creation. God is not a once-a-week hobby. God's Law is Law, full stop.
@@petergrimshaw492 Hello. My apologies, I didn't see this comment. Why are you under the impression that Islam teaches people to work for the dunya? It's quite the opposite. But I'm looking forward to your reasoning for the assumption.
@dadrew TV I believe your comment was removed. RUclips removes links. What I mean is that the stories in the Quran do resemble the bible, but the details are different. Haman in the bible and the Quran are two different people. The one in the bible has no historical backing, while the Haman in the Quran does. This is one example of many
I CAN VERY WELL EXPLAIN THE MEANING OF THIS VERSE: "“[72.8,9] And that we sought to reach heaven, but we found it filled with strong guards and flaming stars. And that we used to sit in some of the sitting-places thereof to steal a hearing, but he who would (try to) listen now would find a flame lying in wait for him.” This is a statement made by Jinn, who are Extraterrestrials. What this indicates is that Heaven is actually a protected region in the universe, and the Extraterrestrials try to approach it to eavesdrop, but they are fired upon by missiles and are stopped. In another verse, Quran says, "“[55.33] O assembly of the jinn and the men! If you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass through; you cannot pass through but with authority.” The proof that Jinn are Extraterrestrials is in the Quran itself! The very first verse of Chapter 72 says, "Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened ˹to the Quran,˺ and said ˹to their fellow jinn˺: ‘Indeed, we have heard a wondrous recitation." So it's obvious that a group of Jinn [Extraterrestrials] were visiting earth and heard Quran for the first time, and they were not around all the time. Otherwise, they would have known the history of Islam from the very beginning.
Interesting explanation, but unfortunately in your explanation of the Sourate Al Jinn #72. You made a statement we understand it as a confirmation. That those Jinns are extraterrestrials. With all my respect to you , you are misleading people. Because in the Arabic text is not written as such a meaning. It is mentioned meteorites, and in your only personal imagination and creativity you described that they are fired missiles. I have No problem at all to be creative but I have a huge problem to mislead people who are not Arabic speaking.
Wow this man is right on the money. the hudaibia treaty was THE turning point of Islam. Scheikh Imran Hussein talked about the specifics of this important point in islam as a lecture about the political brilliance of the prophet.
One thing to be careful of is to avoid Judeo-Christian understandings when interpreting the Muslim viewpoint...for instance, Jinn and angels aren't necessarily immaterial, so that being affected by material things may not seem so odd. Jinn are believed to be made of a smokeless fire, whatever that means. And angels are believed to be made of light, whatever that means. In the classical Christian thought, angels and demons are immaterial. So this can be a huge difference
That fact that god had sent the prophet with a revelation a book, the idea that the prophet then passed away and a book was then revealed a couple a hundred years later is nonsense. The delivering of the book was the prophet's primary mission, the book was here, completed within the lifetime of the prophet.
The book wasn't revealed two hundred years later. They feeding y'all the wrong info and you just run with it. Prophet Muhammad shared everything that was revealed to him before he died. The complete revelation of the book took 20+ years. At the time of his death many Muslims memorized the Holy Quran and they had it written down also. The companion of Prophet Muhammad officially compiled it together. He was a companion so it couldn't have been 200yrs later.
It was compiled ten years after his death not 200 years it was compiled by his companions so clearly couldn’t be 200 years please do more research before commenting on something you know nothing about😂
Incompetency in a person can only be debated on a podium with renowned scholars on the subject matter, which will throw intellectual discourse for better understanding and fairness. Otherwise, everything should be considered irrelevant.
I disagree with him about what happened during the negotiations of Hudaybiyya. The pagan Meccans did not insist on having three gods mentioned in the treaty. The thing they objected to was the name Arrahman translated as compassionate which they claimed they are not familiar with. This guy is totally wrong. These are excerpts from one article: When the Treaty of Hudaybiyya was being indited, an incident took place which throws a revealing sidelight upon the character of the various protagonists engaged in drafting its terms. Dictating to Ali, the Prophet said: “Write, In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Beneficent.” Suhayl, the Makkan envoy, at once raised objection, and said, “Do not write this. Instead, write, ‘In Thy name O Allah.'“ The Prophet complied with this demand. The Prophet next asked Ali to write: “This is a treaty of peace between Muhammad, the Messenger of God and the Quraysh...” Suhayl again objected, and said: “If we had acknowledged you a messenger of God, why would we be fighting against you? Therefore, do not write the words, ‘the Messenger of God,' and write only your own name and the name of your father.” The Prophet was agreeable to comply with this demand also but Ali had already written the words, “Muhammad, the Messenger of God,” and he refused to delete them. He said to his master: “This high rank has been bestowed upon you by Allah Himself, and I shall never delete the words ‘Messenger of Allah' with my hand.” Thereupon, the Prophet took the pen in his own hand, and deleted the words which were offensive to the idolaters. The Treaty of Hudaybiyya was signed on two copies, one for each party.
There clearly is a distinction to make between the initial meaning of the coranic text (which was originally christian, though anti-trinitarian) and the meaning that was imposed (and distorted) later (9th and 10th centuries) by the abbassid caliphs (with the creation of the so-called "prophetic tradition" or "sunnah" with a multitude of hadiths, tafsir and siraa inventions). Their goal was to create a new religion serving their imperial interests of conquest and domination by the sword
To the respected professor, yes there were dozens of companions who regularly wrote the verses dictated by Muhammad pbuh. But Ubayi bin Kaab was the most active in this duty. He was also a teacher of Quran..
The discussion on Islam authenticity is undoubtedly favor its solid grounds. The relationship with Christian and Jewish doctrines is there but it is not fundamental in any way to Islam!

1:08:00 , there’s all sorts of inconsistencies in the Quran he says trying to answer or not answer rather to a question by some islamophobe . The professor started by saying: Inam not an Islamic scholar or a Quran scholar…. Then he should stick with that and his stories. As for the verse the guy was mockingly asking, not that he’s interested as I can tell: It simply states that the jinn were being shot and here is the actual verse and it’s English translation: ﴿وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَاعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ فَمَن يَسْتَمِعِ الْآنَ يَجِدْ لَهُ شِهَابًا رَّصَدًا﴾ [ الجن: 9] English - Sahih International And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him. Surah Al-Jinn
There are lots of NON ARABIC (idi*t) speakers in the comment section that keeps mentioning "missile"...it's embarrassing because the word missile is NOT an ARABIC word, it's the limitation of the TRANSLATOR that should be looked up to properly instead of EMBARRASSING themselves and making fun of ISLAM or that verse! A happy REVERT here! Alhamdulillah! I don't care if this video is old. It opened a lot of people's eyes.

Congratulations to Dr Howard for understanding quite accurately the monotheistic doctrine in Islam. He has also confirmed the seerah or the history of the Prophet Mohamed (pbuh) through his own historical sources. Dr Howard may have understood that Quran is the historical testimonial for the events during the 23 years of the Prophetic mission where the time, places and the circumstances of the revelations of every verse in Quran have been recorded. Dr Howard would've realised that Prophet Mohamed (pbuh) was indeed a mighty messenger of God Almighty sent in the chain of messengers Abraham, Moses, Solomon, David and Jesus ( peace be upon all of them). Dr Howard should explore the narrative in verse 17:1 in Quran about his miraculous night journey from Makkah in Arabia to Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem and met with the spirits of all previous prophets. He transformed the nomad Arabic population into a powerful civilization within 23 years of his prophethood so that Muslims later conquered Persia, Byzantine empire and Jerusalem. After the conquest of Jerusalem the second Caliph Omer declared the church of Sepulchre the holiest shrine in Christianity, where the empty tomb of Jesus (pbuh) is believed to be located, under the protection of Muslims. Even today the decree of Caliph Omar is displayed outside the church and the keys of the church is held with Palastenian Muslims. The transformation effected by Muhammad and the Quran on the Arab peoples of the time was indeed impressive but does not prove that Islam is the truth that it claims to be. For instance if the Torah and Injeel were revealed by the same Deity and Muslims now claim they have been tampered with and are not trustworthy, why should we believe the same Deity can preserve the Quran? That is just one of very many problems with Islam's claims. It is a man made concoction which takes advantage of the human need for a Deity and moral law but does not display evidence of being a divine revelation.
@@thenowchurch6419 The reason why Torah and Injeel are not protected by God is that they were revealed to a particular community and for a limited period. Quran is the last revelation for the whole mankind. Please consider the following to recognise the Quran as divine scripture. Prophet Mohmed was illiterate in reading and writing of Arabic language and he was incapable of producing a a document of 6146 verses of excellent literature in Arabic language. It was initially memorised by the Prophet then his companions and to date millions have memorised it. Its preservation for the last 1,400 years is through oral traditions. If all manuscripts and written records are destroyed it can be reproduced to its original text by hundreds of thousands of Qari, those who memorised it, all over the world. It cannot be said to any other scriptures available to mankind.
@@nakeebissadeen1606 With all due respect you are just parroting talking points that do not make sense or line up with truth. If we grant that the Torah was temporary and only for one nation, then we should acknowledge that the Injeel ( The Gospels) were sent to call all nations and that is why there are Christians in most nations of the world. It is a lie to say that the Gospel message was temporary or only for one nation. The Gospels were translated into Greek and various languages including English in order to reach the whole known world but the Quran is written in a language that only a small percentage of the world understands and we are told that it cannot be properly understood by non-Arabic speakers. That does not qualify as a universal revelation. The identity of Muhammad is shrouded in mystery and the composition of the Quran is as well. We have no proof that it came from just one man. Was Muhammad a merchant who would have had to have been literate or was he a poor illiterate keeper of livestock? How do you explain the strong hadiths that claim parts of the Quran were forgotten and some pages were eaten by a goat according to Aisha? On top of that we have Islamic scholar Yassur Khadi claiming that there are gaping holes in the narrative that the Quran was perfectly preserved. The recitations by Muslims around the world have differences, some minor and some are major. It cannot be accurately remade if all manuscripts were destroyed. Those are myths given to the lay Muslims like yourself by the scholars. Study this more in depth and you will see.
@@thenowchurch6419 Onus is on me to clear your misconceptions. First of all Gospels are not Injeel. The revelations to Jesus was in Hebrew Aramaic language. Gospels, written in Greek by unknown authors, are a mixture of third party narrative of what God said, what Jesus said and what others said about Jesus. Original Aramaic version of Injeel became extinct when Jewish Christianity was eliminated in Jerusalem during the third century AD. Seerah of Prophet Mohamed or his history was recorded by early Islamic historians and later confirmed by non Islamic sources as Dr Howard mentioned in the above interview. The revelation of each and every verse of the Quran was recorded with the location, period and circumstances. Arabic is not a minority language. The language was adopted by many countries such as Egypt, many African countries and even in countries under the Ottoman empire. Today it is either spoken or adopted as a second language by 2 billion Muslims around the world. You Don have to listen to Dr Yasir Qathi. Please watch Mythvision podcast on the preservation of the Quran to understand that the standardised version of the Quran as early as 20 years after the death of the Prophet, by his closest companion Caliph Othman is same as what is currently available after 1 400 years. There are 7 different recitations of the Quran without any change in the meaning dating back to the prophet. For example, the same words and vowels in the English language are pronounced differently in England, USA, Australia and even in India.

The Quran is considered untranslatable, yet it is necessary to periodically translate it, as advocated by Dr. Hossain Nasr and many others. However, it is important to note that translations are the result of human understanding of the text, which is inherently limited by various factors. For instance, the progress of human civilization in different scientific disciplines since the time of the Quran's revelation influences our comprehension of its references to creation. Therefore, individuals who read the Quran must possess expertise in all fields, up to the scientific advancements of their time, in order to grasp certain aspects of the Quran. Consequently, there are variations in translations of the Quran even during the same period, as the understanding of the text evolves alongside the progress of human comprehension. Moreover, these differences arise due to disparities between Arabic and the target languages, as well as the linguistic capabilities of the translators in both Arabic and the target language.

Dr James gave very honest explanation regarding Quran.. as historian.. very attractive video.
Another example, let's assume that God speaks to me or about me specifically here:
[20:105-107] They ask you about the mountains. Say, "My Lord will wipe them out. He will leave them like a barren, flat land. Not even the slightest hill will you see therein, nor a dip."
I never asked about "the mountains".
More examples, I'll assume that God is talking to me directly:
[54:1] The Hour has come closer, and the moon has split.
But I see the moon in the sky, it hasn't split.
[54:2] Then they saw a miracle; but they turned away and said, "Old magic."
What miracle?
Now in verse 118 Quran is talking in general terms about people's objections and says it has already outlined detailed signs in the book for such people.
We later understand that the Scriptures are not religious books but rather books of wisdom that we must have the desire to understand and therefore explore as opposed to using them with the purpose of winning debates.

the Quran actually doesn’t support what is happening during the pilgrimage.

Basically the majority of Muslims today have broken off into sects bc of these questionable books being paired with The Holy Book.

Belief? Do you mean faith?

It is crucial to approach scholarly research with a critical mindset, evaluating sources based on their credibility, methodology, and their ability to provide a balanced presentation of various viewpoints

@@glenncorbett1665 read the Qur'an bro
Derek Mythvision you need to read the short bio by Michael Hart when he placed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the first place of Greatest Humans.
Few Notes:
1. Luhayy dragging his intestines in hell, and when I asked him about those who lived between his time and mine he said that they had perished…He was the first to change the religion of Ishmael, to set up idols, and institute the custom of the bahira, sa’iba, wasila, and hami.”

3:96 The first House (of worship) appointed for men was that at Bakka: Full of blessing and of guidance for all kinds of beings
3:97 In it are Signs Manifest; (for example), the Station of Abraham; whoever enters it attains security; Pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah,- those who can afford the journey; but if any deny faith, Allah stands not in need of any of His creatures.
Over time that place became a den of paganism. When the Muslims took over Mecca they rededicated it again and returned to its original purpose. I don’t see in that any pagan accommodations.
A place called Bacca is also mentioned in psalm 84 of the Bible. It is referring to a “House of worship” where people made Pilgrimage and even mentions a “well”
Bacca is actually the old name of Mecca
{ إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَیۡتࣲ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِی بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكࣰا وَهُدࣰى لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ }

I noticed that a lot of people having problems with God’s names and think that when people according to their language giving different name of God that means they have different God, I don’t see that logical way or has anything to do with God, because simply God is not names. Also Quran talks about Jesus and other prophets much more than talking about Mohammed, and describe them much more than Mohammed personal life.
But as I mentioned Quran talks about using force, and I think that has to do with the Arabian pagan tribes in that time and their way of life. I think we must understand the circumstances of life in the time of the events before we can make final decisions.

Given that he was their Prophet, that their faith was based upon the words he uttered and which they viewed as coming from God the Lone Supperme all inspiring God.”
The key word here… uttered.

@@petergrimshaw492 [ But don't you duck the reason for the change of Kibla? ]
Actually it makes a lot of sense because the Israelites periodically were promised that land (and occupied it briefly) after their Hijrah from Egypt.
Palestine was "unseen" when the Israelites were in Egypt. Does the argument work both ways?
[ The paradox of Islam is trying to rationalize the urge to power in the world of Dunya, as opposed to a wholly spiritual or abstract, or 'Unseen' sense of truth? ]
There is no paradox when it is in perfect continuity with Moses and the the rest of the Prophets who all held the same thing.

@dadrew TV I believe your comment was removed. RUclips removes links. What I mean is that the stories in the Quran do resemble the bible, but the details are different. Haman in the bible and the Quran are two different people. The one in the bible has no historical backing, while the Haman in the Quran does. This is one example of many
Muslims believe that hajj elements predate pagans and go to Abraham/Ismael.
If you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass through; you cannot pass through but with authority.”
The proof that Jinn are Extraterrestrials is in the Quran itself!

It was compiled ten years after his death not 200 years it was compiled by his companions so clearly couldn’t be 200 years please do more research before commenting on something you know nothing about😂
How bout Islam talks to the inner nature of people and that’s why it appealed and appeals today to so many people that are converting…
One of the best episodes!
These are excerpts from one article:
When the Treaty of Hudaybiyya was being indited, an incident took place which throws a revealing sidelight upon the character of the various protagonists engaged in drafting its terms.
Therefore, do not write the words, ‘the Messenger of God,' and write only your own name and the name of your father.”
The Prophet was agreeable to comply with this demand also but Ali had already written the words, “Muhammad, the Messenger of God,” and he refused to delete them.
He wouldnt care about your dissagreement.
Sometimes, people just need to find something to encourage their skeptical opinion.
I suggest that the anchorman invites muslim scholars the likes of mohammad hijab, adnan rasid, shabir ally, zakir naik, kalid yasin, ali atae, uthan farouk, and many others who can explain what true Islami is , Quran, Allah. Prophet Muhammad pub, without bias etc

I actually could listen to this man all day long .
1:08:00 , there’s all sorts of inconsistencies in the Quran he says trying to answer or not answer rather to a question by some islamophobe .
The professor started by saying: Inam not an Islamic scholar or a Quran scholar…. Then he should stick with that and his stories.
As for the verse the guy was mockingly asking, not that he’s interested as I can tell:
It simply states that the jinn were being shot and here is the actual verse and it’s English translation:
﴿وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَاعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ فَمَن يَسْتَمِعِ الْآنَ يَجِدْ لَهُ شِهَابًا رَّصَدًا﴾
[ الجن: 9]
English - Sahih International
And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.
Surah Al-Jinn
It always proves itself.

Please see the following short documentary for further details.

Can you give an example of something important Muhammad said but can't be translated into English?
Sure that is the reason he is an expert and already knows that ad accounted for that

There is the word Salah which means pray, or blessing according to context which David Wood n Hatun Tash used to demonize Allah, Prophet Muhammad SAW n Islam in the phrase "Allahummasallialamuhammad" . They interpreted salli from Salah as to pray to Muhammad SAW n adamant that's the meaning. David n Hatun persistently ask the Muslims speakers at speakers corner "who did Allah pray to" when the Muslims say it means Allah is giving his blessing to The Prophet n we continue with Ya Rabbi Sallu alaihi wassallam, Oh God, give your blessing upon him.
