The first customer in the shop - Mrs Blewitt was played by Kathy Staff she was most well know for her role in Last of the Summerwine. A comedy that ran for 31 years and was written by the writer of this show. Her character Nora Batty was a gossipy battleaxe . The sitcom is about retired residents of a Yorkshire town
26:20 - When Arkwright checks the till, it's the only time that I've never seen it slam Shut!
Liz Dawn the lady with the fire wood went on to be a big soap star in Corronation Street, the bread man was John Chalice who was Only Fools and Horses regular character Boycie.
Never noticed Liz Dawn!
@antlermagick unmistakable! But am unknown at the time.
When I was a lickle kid, I used to be sent to the greengrocers for kindling. They sold wooden orange crates for 3 pence. Or chopped up crates as bundles of kindling for 6 pence. 🙂
Was the baker's man John Challis? It looked like him. John Challis played quite an important character in the sit com Only Fools and horses, which was huge for David Jason ( Granvil )
There is another funeral episode in a later series. I thought it would the other one when I saw the title.
Yes, it is John Challis.
The lady at the beginning is Liz Dawn, aka Coronation Street's Vera Duckworth...
9:30 Cottage loaves! You never see cottage loaves any more.
Brilliant writing from Ronnie Barker, subtle writing that got past the BBC censors in a pre-Watershed programme. Driving like a Family Planner, we never know if you are going to pull out in the middle of the road.
It was written by Roy Clarke.
@@jerribee1 Indeed my mistake.
Arkwright isn't alone when he puts the note on the collection plate and takes 'the change' as I have seen it happen in the past during a regular church service. 😃
damn i never realised boycee was the breadman untill now
Great reaction. I suspect they got some of the buffet from the funeral and took it back to the shop.
ah
03:45 Not unless you're Bill Owen.
One of the great mysteries of life what on earth did Compo see in Nora Batty😆?
Not only a very British comedy. Very English and Northern! 😆This was when British TV made drama and comedy informed by regional themes and ideas before TV and society became more and more homogenised - that's why these will never lose appeal. I strongly endorse Last of the Summer Wine as well, which is gentler and more whimsical (but only up to about 1987 or 90 if you want the consistent best).
Conversely the Open All Hours sequel series from recent years is worth looking at as it's contemporary but retains the values of the early episodes.
wait till you get to the episode 'the Ginger Men'
That was the a good episode ❤
There are people like Arkwright
The younger man / older relative scenario is one of comedy's "memes" probably done first on British Television with Steptoe and Son
Gentle UK northern humour.
Purely by chance there was a programme about Open All Hours on TV yesterday. It discusses the background and making of the show. It was called Open All Hours: A Celebration, I've just had a look and it's on RUclips. Maybe not the best for a reaction video but I'm sure you would enjoy watching it.
thanks Marty
Any chance of unlucky alf please
the fast show right?
