Have lived in Bulgaria 7 years but never been to Veliko Tarnovo. Looks a place worth a visit. One memory I have of a train journey from Sofia to Yambol was sitting in one of the compartments which was empty, but made the cardinal sin of sitting in wrong seat number. As it was empty I thought I would take a window seat, until ticket inspector dressed like a military soldier arrived to check ticket and ordered me back to my proper seat by sliding door. The compartment remained empty for entire journey. Great video though. Lol
I could hear the entire video very well indeed. Everyone is entitled to voice there opinion. But found several comments extremely rude. Absolutely uncalled for. Easier and friendlier to voice any criticism with politeness. Can't wait to see your next destination.
Lovely. Actually to spent this special day in a city of Veliko Turnovo (Great Turnovo) Is amazing, because this city is full of historical energy from the old Bulgarian Kingdom.
I loved watching this! I really enjoyed the style and you're editing was so tight and on point! That monastery looked absolutely stunning. I'm not one for traveling, let alone solo traveling, but I did once take off to Brasilia for 2 days solo during my trip to Brazil. Obviously, it was 'Caitlin' style, so I *was* staying in a 5 star hotel BUT once I was out exploring on my own it was one hell of an experience! Terrifying and beautiful in equal proportions. No map, no phone, no power of language, just a girl with a camera looking at Oscar Neimeyer's modernist architecture. Your walk back from the monastery reminded me of when I got completely lost and ended up in the middle of nowhere, watching snakes slither across the dusty, deserted road and wondering if I was going to die out there. Spoiler alert - I didn't. Someone in a car stopped to help me but I couldn't understand his Portuguese, and he definitely couldn't understand my pathetic attempt to speak it, and obviously, I was reluctant to hop in his car, despite his friendly disposition! In the end, like an oasis mirage, I spotted a little restaurant near a man-made lake and someone called me a cab back to the center of the city. My biggest takeaway from the entire experience was just how important architecture as an art form was to me. The perfect form of concrete and glass can soothe me, make me brave. I would love to see more of this long-form, immersive style of Vlog from you! Happy birthday for last year, this year, next year and every year you bloody stunner.

I really had to pee, so naturally I walked into the old parliament building where the independence of the state was proclaimed (or something like that) and the lady at the front desk was kind enough to let me use their bathroom. It was an old Soviet style toilet where you have to squat if you have to take a dump, or if you have to pee you simply stay on your feet and aim at a tiny hole on the floor. Finally, as I flushed the damn thing, a mighty tsunami covered the entire stall floor and soaked my feet in piss and water. It was an experience I knew I'd share with the world one day. Hi from Tarnovo. Nice to here some good words to my town. One more thing it is very safe. You (yang girl) can walk by night and is safe. You could be my family guest (to my wife and children) and spend good time :).
I spent my 21st in Surakarta, Indonesia. We went to the local market, bought a chicken, took it home and butchered it. Then we made home style sate. You don’t anymore authentic than that.
I think it's always a very good idea to spend your birthday alone and in such a beautiful town. :) I also do this from time to time and it helps me to "refresh" myself. :) There are many beautiful, interesting and historical places in Bulgaria and Veliko Tarnovo is definitely the right spot! If the tourist crowd doesn't bothers you, I recomend you to come again on sept. 22, when we celebrate the Independancy of Bulgaria - one of our biggest national days. The biggest celebrations happen in Veliko Tarnovo, because it was the third capital of Bulgaria during the Second bulgarian kingdom, and nowadays the city is officialy the historical and spiritual capital of the country. Visit this magnificent place once again, you won't be sorry!
I agree, it's so refreshing! Wow that's so interesting because I was in Sofia on that day and didn't notice any celebrations there. I will keep this in mind for Veliko Tarnovo for another year :)
Metallica in the background at 9:37 ! 13:34 the restaurant is named Щастливеца (Shtastlivetsa- literary "the lucky/happy/blessed one), after the nickname of one of the greatest bulgarian writers of all time- Aleko Konstantinov. He named himself this way after all of his close relatives passed away in a period of 5 years. He said "now i don't have anyone left to mourn, thus i am blessed" 16:40 and this is Asenevtsi brothers monument. The founders of the The Second Bulgarian Empire in XII century. And Tsarevets- fortress and capital of The Second Bulgarian Empire. Поздрави от България! 🇧🇬
Very hilly town. Looks magical with vistas all over the place. If you were going to end up having to walk back from the Monastery of Transfiguration it is a good thing it looked to be mostly downhill. Need good walking boots/shoes for travelling - blisters otherwise.
❤️ great video and journey :) pleased to see you enjoyed your time in Bulgaria. Being alone on your bd and doing a ''crazy'' thing as this is not such a bad idea. Had tried something like that 1 year ago walking miles down a beautiful endless beach in Northern Denmark.
Bulgarians they are very nice people I find on my visits shopska salad is nice ..I'm hoping to find the Bogomils or Cathar religion places to visit next time . . My strangest place I went to was the Codford circle on top of a hill Warminister wilts England which is similar to Stonehenge but missing the bluestones . The church is amazing up the top their a very long climb though .
@@RoxanneTaylorMedia Please do I'm a new subscriber and keep the good work up I like ancient sites Avebury..Stonehenge ...Codford circle a bit of a walk up their and see the Roman castle at Porchester and the Needles near Me in southern England.
Hi Roxanne, I live here in BG and was in that street where you stayed, I've walked were you walked many times, we have an old Bulgarian Cart in our garden where we live and if you search "old Bulgarian cart" on Google it's the most photographed one ever, its full of flowers and coloured red and black and pictured outside a Hotel on the cobblestone tourist street you was in. Great Video btw.
Hehe sorry about that - a few people have pointed that out. I call a lot of places town by accident because we don't have many cities in Australia - we only really have one capital city per state and the rest are called towns.
You actually look like my friends clone, she owns a circus, ok so she looks different now as we’re now in our 40s but at that age it’s spooky. That blows my mind.
The restaurant at 9.22? It was called Ego Pizza & Grill. There are a couple of differetn addresses that seem to come up on Google but this is the Trip Advisor page www.tripadvisor.com.au/Restaurant_Review-g303653-d939647-Reviews-Ego_Pizza_Grill-Veliko_Tarnovo_Veliko_Tarnovo_Province.html
It's the Ego Pizza & Grill. There are three in the city, but the one with the most gorgeous view to the Asenevtsi Monument. The address is Stefan Stambolov 79 I think.
i would suggest you change some money prior to every journey. you could've change lira to lev in a lot of exchange offices around grand bazaar. verliko tarnovo, though a popular tourist destination in bulgaria, still has a feel of a small town. I was there in 2011 and honestly found myself hard to find atm or money exchange as well.
I see that you stayed in the old part of Veliko Turnovo, great choice. :) I usually stay few streets up in Slavianska Dusha, they have great view and spacious rooms, but parking can be a pain in the ass there because you need good skills in order to park on that side of the hill. I would also advice you to visit Gabrovo and Tryavna next time you visit the old capital (Veliko Turnovo), since they are close to each other and you will love them as much as Veliko Turnovo. Shtasliveca which is located in the center of the town and you visited in the video is one of the best restaurants in the region. They also have seasonal menu so its always great to visit during different seasons. :) I finished my master degree of tourism in Veliko Turnovo so its a town close to my heart. :)
Woww that's so cool that Shtasliveca changes the menu in the season. I will have to go again one day haha it was so delicious!! Thanks for the recommendation - I have heard about Gabrovo but I didn't get a chance to go there before. Thanks for you nice and informative comment :) All the best for your career :)
About the last part of the video, just to add - people will criticize you no matter who you are and what you do because they compare you to either themselves or the social expectations in general. Whatever your heart is telling you, that's the right thing And yeah mainly the bulgarian boomers and elders yell a loooot ahaha it's charming
Great video, Roxanne! I'm considering buying a small property in Bulgaria next year and this region is on my shortlist of places I like, so I've found your video of much interest. 👌 One thing I'd like to ask you though... what month were you there, as despite the lovely blue skies, you report it as being pretty cold at times. Brrrrr! Thanks! 🙏
Thank you so much - I'm improving my microphone technique in future videos and reducing the music level. Can I ask you what you are watching it on? Phone, laptop, headphones, etc? I need to test listening to it in different headphones and speakers before I post next time - oops!
enjoyable video. im irish and heard about Veliko Tarnovo which is a very cultural and heritage city full of hidden secrets just like galway and killarney on the west coast of ireland never been to bulgaria but i shall be going in june hopefully if this corana virus goes away lol.
I'm already 20 seconds in: counter- question: why would anyone feel the need to have to be surrounded by family / friends / co-workers and celebrated for the day that should be special (perhaps even stressing out the person of interest for organizing a party ) and is mostly a day connecting you to your parents or just your mother for that matter.
Great potential this channel, Subscribed. Pls work to figure out the audio part. There were certain words I couldn’t make out. I would completely cut the music and maybe get a camera or mic that doesn’t pick up the surrounding noise. I’m from Macedonia and I’ve traveled quite a bit. Lemme tell you, pasta in the Balkans is not what you want to be ordering in restaurants. In Macedonia and in Bulgaria it’s as bad as it gets, and it is typically way overcooked. The local food is amazing, but I’m guessing you’re vegan, in which case you don’t have much choice. I’m vegan and it’s tough being in the Balkans.
Thank you so much! I'm reducing music in the videos I'm editing at the moment and my next vlogs I film I will take greater care with the microphone because sometimes I'm lazy and don't do it properly. But thanks to all the awesome feedback about this issue I'm going to focus on it :) Yes I've been vegan for a while but am now going to back to a vegetarian diet instead with some dairy because in some countries it's really difficult to find suitable food.
Roxanne Taylor Media I don’t blame you. I had to put being vegan on hold when I spent 2 months in small towns in the Deep South of Brazil. It’s simply impossible to be vegan there. All (and I mean all) the restaurants are buffets, and all the meals are pre-made. All salads are covered in mayonnaise-like substances, the beans are cooked with animal fat, so my only option was steamed rice.
Lol lady,You are nuts, walking back to Tarnovo on foot. Not hard but not advisable for tourist. If you had a local with you, maybe he could had guided you through the hiker's paths, that's actually a bit faster(on foot), and some nice vistas.
Haha aww I wish I knew where to find the hiker's paths but I didn't want to get lost so I thought better to just follow the road...but I'm glad I eventually found a taxi :)
@@RoxanneTaylorMedia Don't worry there are lots of tourists all the time that try to walk there to the monastery from Turnovo not just back like you did on the highway. A lot of them sometimes in groups of 4 or more don't realize how cheap a taxi is here. Anyway have good one! From an X kiwi.
When you were trying to find your hotel I was going like: "FOR F*CK SAKES,JUST TURN ON YOUR DATA." I didn't even realize that you don't have a european SIM card...
thank you so much! A lot of people here agree with you - my editing speakers are different so I'm taking your advice and lowering the music levels in my upcoming videos.

12:34 I was at this restaurant on Christmas Day in 2019. Great place, amazing view in that back room.
ofc it's a beautiful ancient town, it used to be the capital of the country at some point in history :)
so cool! I didn't even know that at the time
Good job! Keep moving forward you are so Cool )) 🔥
Thank you for saying I'm cool :)
I think it's always a very good idea to spend your birthday alone and in such a beautiful town. :) I also do this from time to time and it helps me to "refresh" myself. :)
There are many beautiful, interesting and historical places in Bulgaria and Veliko Tarnovo is definitely the right spot!
So cute... lovely:)
thanks for watching
Veliko Tarnovo is always a win! + Plovdiv and Stara Zagora - the best places to visit for a foreigner in BG.
Great vid!
Thank you! I think Plovdiv will be on my list next time
Metallica in the background at 9:37 !
He said "now i don't have anyone left to mourn, thus i am blessed"
16:40 and this is Asenevtsi brothers monument. The founders of the The Second Bulgarian Empire in XII century.
And Tsarevets- fortress and capital of The Second Bulgarian Empire.
Поздрави от България! 🇧🇬
Wow thanks for all the extra information!I love that guy's perspective about being blessed
It's weird to see places and streets that I visit every week on RUclips by Australian❤️😀❤️😀❤️😀❤️
Hehe oh I know what you mean when I see my home town on RUclips it's so weird haha
@@RoxanneTaylorMedia ❤️
Wow....nice video..You are so cute.. Happy birthday !!! a bit late,I know...but never mind, :-) Good luck,aussie lady ...
Thank you so much! IT was a beautiful place to spend my birthday :)
That's my home town! I love that you love itttttt!!!!
Wow that sounds so cool! I must check it out!!
Next time , come to Burgas , Bulgaria and spend your birthday with me ? :)
thanks for the kind offer
@@RoxanneTaylorMedia Angel Peshev is right Burgas is the best in Bulgaria! Amazing beach but pretty touristy!
Хиена.. 😀
I hope you like Veliko Tarnovo❤️❤️❤️🇧🇬🇧🇬
Thank you, good video
Thanks for watching :)
Yeah! That little town... 🤦♀️ It‘s only one of the most significant places in our country’s history, but sure... that little town... 😆
That blows my mind.
catherine donoghue hehe how funny! I love when that happens!
Lovely video from a town I fell in love with...what is the first restaurant called please? I couldn’t understand and would like to visit it!
You're so sweet hope you liked my country 😊😊
Thank you, it was beautiful
Beautiful video!
If you come to Bulgaria Sofia I will be happy to recommend you places to see and also meet you
Thank you so much!
i would suggest you change some money prior to every journey. you could've change lira to lev in a lot of exchange offices around grand bazaar. verliko tarnovo, though a popular tourist destination in bulgaria, still has a feel of a small town. I was there in 2011 and honestly found myself hard to find atm or money exchange as well.
in travel we are never alone ;-)
Great video! Thank you
Thanks so much for your comment
try in my lovely Plovdiv :)
About the last part of the video, just to add - people will criticize you no matter who you are and what you do because they compare you to either themselves or the social expectations in general. Whatever your heart is telling you, that's the right thing
And yeah mainly the bulgarian boomers and elders yell a loooot ahaha it's charming
OMG Thank you so much for your awesome comment. I totally agree - always follow your heart!
The music is a little bit loud. The old town in Plovdiv is also nice.
adasha thanks so much for the feedback! I’ll make it quieter in future videos :) Hopefully next time I can visit Plovdiv too
My hometown :) Could've arranged you with company for your b-day and a nice party too :)
Aw thank you - if I come there again I'll let you know :)
Great video, Roxanne!
I'm considering buying a small property in Bulgaria next year and this region is on my shortlist of places I like, so I've found your video of much interest. 👌
One thing I'd like to ask you though... what month were you there, as despite the lovely blue skies, you report it as being pretty cold at times. Brrrrr!
Thanks! 🙏
You could have just hitchhiked haha. In Bulgaria, it's totally normal and safe. And for next time, talk to the younger people! They all speak English.
Awesome thank you! I didn't find many young locals to hang out with as I was most just in the older area.
Veliko Tarnovo is everything but not a random town. anyway try random Burgas
Hehe it was random to me because I'd never heard of it before. I really liked it :) Thanks for the tip, I will try Burgas next time
@@RoxanneTaylorMedia i suggest you should visit and the incredibil city call BRASOV from Transylvania , Romania . Is on of the hidden gems of Europe 😁
Too much background music , can't hear your voice clearly.
Thank you so much - I'm improving my microphone technique in future videos and reducing the music level. Can I ask you what you are watching it on? Phone, laptop, headphones, etc? I need to test listening to it in different headphones and speakers before I post next time - oops!
@@RoxanneTaylorMedia I'm watching in a desktop
enjoyable video. im irish and heard about Veliko Tarnovo which is a very cultural and heritage city full of hidden secrets just like galway and killarney on the west coast of ireland never been to bulgaria but i shall be going in june hopefully if this corana virus goes away lol.
But thanks to all the awesome feedback about this issue I'm going to focus on it :)
Yes I've been vegan for a while but am now going to back to a vegetarian diet instead with some dairy because in some countries it's really difficult to find suitable food.
Well, Bulga mostly do not want to help me, so there would not be anyone to guide her. And if they want, there is a language barrier.
True I did notice the language barrier in Bulgaria more than most other European countries I visited. I wasn’t there long enough to learn many words
When you were trying to find your hotel I was going like: "FOR F*CK SAKES,JUST TURN ON YOUR DATA." I didn't even realize that you don't have a european SIM card...
hahaha yep, I think next time I'll get one!
it is impossible to hear what you're saying from all the background music. How come you didn't preview it before posting?
thank you so much! A lot of people here agree with you - my editing speakers are different so I'm taking your advice and lowering the music levels in my upcoming videos.
